FRNY Window Policy

Dear All, Recently, we have been informed of certain instances of windows being opened, or having been left open, throughout FRNY. The windows in FRNY should, however, always remain closed, as per School policy. First, due to safety concerns, windows in a building such as ours are to remain closed. Second, the opening of windows creates a strain on the building's central air systems. Third, the opening and closing of various windows leads to unnecessary wear and tear. Finally, we have received ongoing complaints of items having been thrown out of our windows leading to unnecessary time taken away from our service staff for cleaning of said refuse. For these reasons, we will begin enforcing the above School policy by ensuring that all windows in FRNY cannot be opened. We ask for your understanding and cooperation while we work toward this. New PMP administrator

Dear colleagues: I am very pleased to announce that Julayne Moser will assume the role of Administrator for the Professional Master's Program (PMP) beginning October 25, 2021. Julayne brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our School, having been in a variety of positions over the past several years at Purdue. She served as Director of Graduate Programs in the School of Mechanical Engineering from 2006 to 2018, with responsibilities including oversight of the thesis MS, combined BS/MS, PhD/Direct PhD, and online MS programs. In 2018, Julayne transitioned to Purdue Engineering Online, assuming the role of Director of Academic Affairs. In this position, she managed both the online MS program in Interdisciplinary Engineering and the graduate certificate program. After a reorganization of Purdue Online in 2020, Julayne most recently has been managing online programs in Purdue Polytechnic, most notably the Online Doctorate of Technology (DTech) offering. In addition to these positions at Purdue, Julayne has been very active in the American Association for Engineering Education (ASEE) over the past 20 years, including a position on the Board of Directors from 2016 to 2019. In recognition of her support of ASEE, she was the recipient of the Joseph M. Biedenbach Award for Distinguished Service in 2019. Eye protection: safety glasses at a minimum. Safety goggles may be needed if there is the hazard of a spill, or if you are wearing contact lenses. Please remember that prescription glasses are not a substitute for safety glasses. Prescription glasses alone can not be used in the lab; you will need to wear a pair of "over the glasses" safety glasses, or safety goggles on top of your prescription glasses while working in the lab. Prescription safety glasses made at an optician are also an acceptable solution. If you need a pair of "over the glasses" type of safety glasses, please see Jason in FRNY G135. Get in the good habit of putting the safety glasses on when you enter the lab and only remove them when you exit the lab. 2. Skin protection: lab coat, closed toe shoes and long pants or equivalent are a MUST. Shorts are NOT allowed in the lab! During Covid time, a face mask is also required. If your work involves work with flammable chemicals, your lab coat needs to be flame resistant to withheld fire for 15 minutes. If you work with hazardous chemicals, chemical resistant safety gloves are part of the required PPE. Please consult compatibility charts and choose the gloves that offer maximum protection for the chemicals you work with (check for breakthrough time - the higher the better; >480 min is preferable). Additional PPE may be required depending on the results of the hazard assessment done for the tasks you are performing in the lab - follow the instructions you received in your individual PPE training.
