Dear Colleagues, After serving since January, 2009 as our School's Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), Prof. Litster recently requested relief from this service, to devote more time to his teaching and research. Reluctantly, I accepted his request. On behalf of our School's faculty, staff and graduate students, I express deep gratitude to Jim for his outstanding service in this role. Simultaneously, I am pleased to inform that, effective July 1, Prof. Mike Harris has accepted to become our School's DGS. In this capacity, he will advise the graduate students and oversee the operations of the graduate office. I am grateful that Mike has accepted this position of leadership and service. Congratulations to Nick Delgass!

Dear Colleagues, I am absolutely delighted to inform that Nick Delgass will receive the 2012 AIChE R.H. Wilhelm Award in Chemical Reaction Engineering. The Wilhelm Award is among the few so-called Institute Awards. Nick will receive the award at the AIChE Annual Meeting to be held in Pittsburgh during October 28 - November 2, 2012. The award is for Nick's distinguished and sustained contributions to the field of Chemical Reaction Engineering. His citation reads: "For fundamental advances in the understanding and engineering of catalysts through pioneering contributions in techniques for catalyst characterization, reaction and catalyst chemistry, and catalyst design." Industrial Education Director - School of Chemical Engineering

Dear Colleagues, I am writing to inform that Linda Davis, who has served as our School's inaugural Industrial Education Director (IED) since June 2007, is leaving her position effective June 29, 2012. She will move to Austin, TX with her husband Bob Davis, a distinguished alumnus of our School, who is currently Director of the Purdue Enterprise Company. Their move, however, will come later as Linda will remain in our School this Fall as a Lecturer (50% FTE), teaching the very popular senior elective Process Safety Management course, which she has helped to develop. She will also develop safety examples for all our UG and graduate core courses - this is important as Safety considerations are now a part of the ABET accreditation. The IED position grew significantly in scope and impact during Linda's tenure - I thank Linda for her exemplary service and leadership in our School during the past five years. In fact, in recognition of her accomplishments, Linda Davis received the 2010 CoE Staff Award of Excellence for Leadership. Gabriela Nagy will join our School in the IED position on August 13, 2012. She received her BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cluj in Romania and PhD in Chemistry from De Montfort University in the UK. She has held a variety of positions in the School of Pharmacy at De Montfort University since 2006 and is currently a Lecturer there. Gabriela Nagy will have the same duties as Linda Davis: manage the ChE co-op program, coordinate the professional development seminars (ChE 200, 300 and 400), chair the ChE Safety Committee, and serve as Director of the Fundamentals Laboratory. Finally, I note that Dr. Gabriela Nagy is wife of Dr. Zoltan Nagy, who will join our School as Professor this August. Please join me in thanking Linda Davis for her exemplary service to our School, welcome her in a new role this Fall, and also welcome Gabriela Nagy as a new staff member of our School. Jeff Valley - out of office, plans for his absence

Good morning, Jeff Valley will be out of the office from today until June 12, 2012. During his time away, Chase Brummet will be fulfilling his duties. Chase is the student helper we have had with us for the past two and a half years. He graduated this May with a degree in Communications and will continue with us full time for the summer. Chase should be contacted directly for routine items (moving furniture, temperature in rooms, keys, etc) and I should be contacted for all other items. Safety Update: Flammable Cabinet Shelf Failures

ChE Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students, There have been several incidents reported where shelves in flammable cabinets have collapsed or come loose. When this happens there is a high potential for breakage of flammable chemical containers. Flammable liquid spills pose a significant fire and personnel hazard!
