Hello Everyone, The ChE GSO is hosting a Thanksgiving - Food and Clothing Drive. Boxes will be placed in the FRNY atrium starting tomorrow (Nov 2) and they will be left there till Nov 9. Contributions can be made at any time according to your convenience. The FOOD ITEMS will be donated to Food Finders Food Bank in Lafayette. You can find more information on them here<https://www.food-finders.org/programs/>. Any shelf stable food that won't perish for at least another month and does not need special storage conditions would be ideal. (Like canned fruits/veggies/beans, pasta, rice, oats, cereal, Nut butter etc). We could take produce that have a long shelf life like onions/potatoes. But it would be appreciated if they were donated closer to Nov 9. Note: Food Finders do not give out any type of dessert items All CLOTHING ITEMS will be donated to Salvation Army or Goodwill. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley (2009 Ph.D. ChE) and NC State University (2004, B.S. ChE) and did post-doctoral training at KTH (2012). He is a Fellow of Science for Life Laboratory (2014), a national laboratory focusing on molecular biology, and a Novo Nordisk Fonden Ascending Investigator (2020). His research is on metabolic engineering of CO2-fixing bacteria, with focus on Calvin cycle bacteria such as cyanobacteria. The research uses systems biology methods such as proteomics to study CO2 fixation metabolism, and to guide engineering strategies for enhancing CO2 uptake and conversion. His group also develops synthetic biology tools in these strains. This same regulation can complicate metabolic engineering strategies, as pathway flux becomes restricted. However, our knowledge of such regulations is limited for most microbial strains. Here I will describe our work using recently developed proteomics. methods, such as limited proteolysis small molecule mapping (LiP-SMap) to identify metabolite-protein interactions in the proteomes of cyanobacteria and lithoautotrophic bacteria that fix CO2 using the Calvin cycle. Clustering analysis of the hundreds of detected interactions showed that some metabolites interacted in a species-specific manner, such as interactions of glucose-6-phosphate in Cupriavidus necator and of glyoxylate in Synechocystis sp PCC6803. Metabolite interactions were tested for their effects on enzyme activity with Calvin cycle enzymes fructose-1,6/sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase (F/SBPase). The Calvin cycle intermediate GAP activated both Synechocystis and Cupriavidus F/SBPase, indicating a feed-forward activation of the Calvin cycle in both photoautotrophs and chemolithoautotrophs. Lessons learned (summary of ChE safety incidents July-October) and other safety communication

Hello everyone, Please find attached a summary of the safety incidents and near misses reported to me from July 2022 to date. I hope that sharing this information with you will prevent similar situations from happening in the future. Please continue to report ALL safety incidents and near misses using the form Safety Incident/Near Miss Report<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/safety-incident…> posted on our website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety under "Workplace Injury Information". Recommendation: The ChE safety committee recommends that all labs using gas cylinders keep a dedicated cylinder wrench, such as the Matterson TW-5 Cylinder Handwheel Wrench in the lab, and use it in case the cylinder cap is stuck on and can't be easily removed by hand. This tool can also be used to open cylinder valves. I attach some information regarding the use of a gas cylinder wrench and more information can be found at this link: https://store.mathesongas.com/tw-series-cylinder-wrenches/ Eyewash stations in the lab need to be flushed weekly, and the completion of this task needs to be recorded/logged. Please find attached a template of a log that can be used to record the completion of this task. Please keep the log somewhere near the eye wash station as the safety committee (and REM) is checking on this during safety inspections. Any other logs are accepted, but documentation that the task was completed on a weekly basis is required. The Annual Safety Chair Meeting is scheduled for November 9, 2022, from 8 am- 11 am in Stewart Center, Room 214. Room 218 will feature a safety fair from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. with a variety of vendor displays along with REM and public safety representatives to answer questions about safety needs. The Safety Chair Meeting is split into three sessions, with the third and final session, 10:15-11 a.m., having a laboratory theme targeting an academic research audience.
