As the J. W. Wright Regents Endowed Chair Professor, her research focuses on studying metal particle combustion in ways that can enhance our national safety and security. She has received many research awards including the US Presidential Early Career Award (PECASE) and the DoD Young Investigator Program Award and has 5 patents and over 200 journal publications on this topic. Dr. Pantoya is also an advocate for early engineering education with DOD and DOE STEM grants that promote the development and integration of educational tools and models for culturally and linguistically diverse students. She is also the co-author of several children’s books introducing engineering to young kids (i.e., Engineering Elephants, Designing Dandelions, Optimizing an Octopus). ******* ******* "Surface Chemistry Promoting Metal Particle Combustion" Thursday, March 23, 2022 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Abstract: Micron scale aluminum (Al) particles are notoriously plagued with incomplete combustion and sluggish ignition. One way to increase overall Al reactivity is through surface reactions with the aluminum oxide shell. This presentation will focus on a new synthesis strategy for core-shell aluminum particles that can enhance metal particle reactive performance in explosive applications. The strategy balances activation energy threshold with ignition sensitivity metrics required to safely handle fuel powder. The core-shell structure is aluminum fuel that is passivated by a halogenated shell that purposefully provides oxygen gas at relevant time scales for metal oxidation reactions. Details of the synthesis process will be discussed, and results of reactive performance also highlighted. Start of self-audits of ChE labs and offices

Hello Everyone, Our School is scheduled to have the Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) review during the month of March 2023. Part of this process is the completion of the safety self-audit of ALL ChE laboratories AND offices. The ISP Self-Audit checklist (attached) can be found on the ChE School's website (https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety) under the "Laboratory Safety Requirements" heading (Integrated Safety Plan Self-Audit Checklist<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/forms/ispcheck.pdf>) , or on REM's website: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/isp/index.html . Please only use these forms, as they are the most up-to-date forms that are now used at University level. One form needs to be completed for EACH lab/storage area/machine shop. However, multiple offices can be included on the same form. 1. The first eight sections have universal questions that apply to every area. For self-audits of office space, only section 1-8 have to be completed. I attach the Hazard Assessment Certification for FRNY offices for your information; please answer "yes" to questions 8.1 - 8.4 for offices. 2. Sections 9 to 29 have questions related to specialized operations; research laboratories and shops should address all sections (section 1 through 29). 3. All self-audit checklists must be signed by PI/supervisor, not necessarily by the person completing the self-audit. 4. Electronic signatures are accepted on ISP self-audit forms. In addition to completing the self-audit for your labs/shop, please review and update the door posting, hazard assessment (should be placed inside the lab, near the entrance), chemical inventory (Form HCP4), and lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (at a minimum, the first page needs to be signed by the PI of the lab and dated within the last 6 months). They should be all accurate and dated within the last six months. If your group is keeping SDSs saved electronically, please make sure you follow the recommendations issued by the safety committee, that are listed HERE<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/Guidelines%20fo…>. Later this month the ChE Safety Committee will perform safety inspections of all laboratories and offices and will send the inspection reports to the faculty responsible for those areas. Deficiencies identified in your audits and during the safety inspections will need to be addressed before the recertification meeting with REM. Safety inspection of ALL labs and offices in FRNY - next week

Hello everyone, In preparation for the ISP recertification with EHS/REM in March, members of the ChE Safety Committee will conduct safety inspections of ALL labs and offices, starting Monday, February 20, 2023. We will use the forms in the attached Excel workbook (form on the first tab for labs, form on the second tab for offices). If you have a sensitive experiment running and your lab can't be inspected now, please place a clearly visible note on the entrance door to the lab, and the inspection team will respect that. Reports of the inspections will be sent to PIs and safety officers (for labs) and to occupants of labs (if needed). Any identified deficiencies will need to be corrected within the time specified on the forms. Instructions on how to follow up regarding correction of deficiencies will be communicated when the results of the safety inspections are shared. Thank you for your commitment to safety! Addition side water

BE ADVISED - The hot water on the addition side of the building had some repairs made which required the system to be shut down for a period of time. When the valves are opened back up and the pressure increases, the result is deposits inside the pipes break loose and need to be cleared. They are in the process now of flushing out the system to clear all the lines of any discolored water. This will take some time so please be patient as they put the system back into operation.
