He has worked extensively in the Permian Basin to improve hydraulic fracking business processes, reducing human error, and mentoring the next generation of oil and gas leaders. He had a distinguished 30-year career in the U.S. Army and is a nationally recognized scientist and educator. He has diverse leadership experience leading complex academic, operational, and scientific research and development organizations, with responsibility for setting organization vision/goals, leading change, and achieving results. His executive leadership of academic organizations, and research and development teams included senior-level engagement with multiple Department of Defense stakeholders, and with a wide variety of top-tier universities, private research labs and commercial companies. He assisted the DoD in developing the next generation "green" pyrotechnics and improved high explosive formulations. His distinguished military career included two combat tours, 8 overseas assignments, and culminated as Professor of Life Science and Head of the Department of Chemistry and Life Science at the United States Military Academy at West Point, 2011-2017. He led the 51-person academic department responsible for educating and developing future Army leaders (cadets) in the fields of Chemistry, Life Science, and Chemical Engineering. Under his leadership the Department successfully gained American Chemical Society certification of the Chemistry Program in 2013, American Board of Engineering Technology accreditation of the Chemical Engineering Program in 2015 and completed the $150M renovation and expansion of the Bartlett Hall Science Center. Leon's distinguished achievements include serving as the Vice Dean of the National Military Academy of Afghanistan in Kabul where he led, developed, and mentored 200 Afghan faculty and staff to educate 1,500 cadets in a four-year undergraduate college program, under extraordinarily challenging conditions. He professionally mentored the Dean, Director of Admissions and 12 academic department heads to improve education and administrative procedures resulting in the first ever graduating class of future Afghan Army officers. He has authored over 40 multidisciplinary peer-reviewed publications, numerous technical publications and was awarded a US patent. The Manthiram Lab is focused on the molecular engineering of electrocatalysts for the synthesis of organic molecules, including pharmaceuticals, fuels, and commodity chemicals, using renewable feedstocks. Karthish received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University in 2010 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2015. After a one-year postdoc at the California Institute of Technology, he joined MIT as an Assistant Professor in 2017. In 2021, he moved to Caltech as a Full Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Karthish's research has been recognized with several awards, including the DOE Early Career Award, NSF CAREER Award, Sloan Research Fellowship, 3M Nontenured Faculty Award, American Institute of Chemical Engineers 35 Under 35, American Chemical Society PRF New Investigator Award, Dan Cubicciotti Award of the Electrochemical Society, and Forbes 30 Under 30 in Science. Karthish's teaching has been recognized with the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, C. He serves on the Early Career Advisory Board for ACS Catalysis and on the Advisory Board for Trends in Chemistry. ******* ******* "Electrification and Decarbonization of Chemical Synthesis" Tuesday, October 4, 2022 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception will be held in FRNY Atrium at 2:30 p.m. - Abstract: Chemical synthesis is responsible for significant emissions of carbon dioxide worldwide. These emissions arise not only due to the energy requirements of chemical synthesis, but since hydrocarbon feedstocks can be overoxidized or used as hydrogen sources. Using renewable electricity to drive chemical synthesis may provide a route to overcoming these challenges, enabling synthetic routes which operate at benign conditions and utilize sustainable inputs. We are developing an electrosynthetic toolkit in which distributed feedstocks, including carbon dioxide, dinitrogen, water, and renewable electricity, can be converted into diverse fuels, chemicals, and materials. In this presentation, we will first share recent advances made in our laboratory on nitrogen fixation to synthesize ammonia at ambient conditions. Specifically, our lab has investigated a continuous lithium-mediated approach to ammonia synthesis and understood the reaction network that controls selectivity. We have developed non-aqueous gas-diffusion electrodes which lead to high rates of ammonia synthesis at ambient conditions. Then, we will discuss how water can be used as a sustainable oxygen-atom source and how carbon dioxide can be used to achieve carbon chain extension.
