Dear Colleagues, I am writing to inform that Dr. Yury Zvinevich has been appointed to a new position in our School, Director of Instrumentation. This position is created by eliminating the previous position, Electronics Shop Coordinator, held by Dr. David Taylor. Dr. Zvinevich's position is 45% on School funds and the remaining on research funds. For the School portion, his duties involve maintaining the electronic aspects of both the junior Fundamentals Lab and the senior Unit Operations Lab (30%); serving the School's research needs related to electronics (10%); and serving on the Safety Cmte (5%). For the research portion, he will continue to contribute to the research efforts of Professors Ribeiro and Caruthers (55%). Please join me in welcoming Dr. Zvinevich to his new position! SATURDAY 4/2 Pugwash Annual Conference!!! ACCESS: RESOURCES, INFORMATION, AND TECHNOLOGY FOR THE WORLD Interested in Wikipedia, international development, or engineering to improve people's lives? Purdue Student Pugwash is hosting its 6th annual conference on Saturday April 2. The conference will explore the ways in which science, technology, and engineering are being used to improve the standard of living throughout the world and how millions are gaining access to clean water, electricity, Internet, education and more. Experts from across the nation will discuss issues as varied as access to clean water (featuring a director of Engineers without Borders who has led projects bringing clean water to rural Nicaragua) to food security (featuring Dr. Gebisa Ejeta, winner of the 2009 World Food Prize for his work towards securing Africa's food supply) to overcoming information censorship in autocratic nations (featuring Reporters Without Borders). Our keynote speaker is Mr. Douglas Gardner, Deputy Director of the UN Bureau of Development, who will speak on the global standard of living and progress towards achieving the Millenium Development Goals. Our closing speaker is Mr. Zach Exley, the Chief Community Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia), who will speak on Wikipedia and the future of access to information worldwide. And that's just a sampling of who will be at our conference (see the attached overview and agenda for more information). Attendees also receive a catered breakfast and lunch on Saturday, a t-shirt, and access to an additional Friday talk and conference social featuring board games and pizza. You can register through our website, or if you would prefer to pay with cash or check, simply come to any of our events or office hours in the next two weeks. Good Afternoon, The Staff Awards Committee in the School of Chemical Engineering is happy to invite nominations for the 2011 ChE Staff Excellence Award. The criteria, nomination form and details are attached. Nomination Process: Any ChE faculty member, staff or graduate/undergraduate student can nominate any ChE staff member. A nominator or contributor with a letter of support can endorse only one candidate. Nominations should not be more than 2 pages long and should include specific examples. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate Seminar Series - Centennial Seminar Dr. Aditya Bhan Department of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science University of Minnesota "Catalysis in a Pocket: Catalytic Consequences of Spatial Constraints in Acidic Zeolites" March 22, 2011 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. FRNY G140 Abstract: Zeolites are crystalline inorganic framework oxides with channel and pocket dimensions typically smaller than 1 nanometer. Their constrained environments are well known to select for chemical reactions via steric mechanisms, typically, by exclusion of molecules or transition states based on size. The strong effects of pore size and shape as they become commensurate with those of reactant species and the concomitant effects on the enthalpy and entropy of adsorption have also been broadly and convincingly noted. We inquire instead, what are the effects of confinement in small channels? In this talk, I will present three examples where reactivity in small 8-membered ring pockets of H-MOR differs from that in larger 12-membered ring channels of MOR. (i) We show that the apparent effects of proton density and of hydroxyl group environment on DME carbonylation turnover rates reflect instead the remarkable specificity of eight-membered ring zeolite channels in accelerating kinetically relevant *CH3-CO reaction steps. (ii) In zeolite pores large enough to accommodate ethanol dimers, ethanol preferentially dehydrates via a bimolecular pathway to generate diethyl ether since the formation of ethanol dimeric species is energetically more favorable than the formation of ethanol monomers. In zeolite channels too small to accommodate ethanol dimers, ethanol is selectively dehydrated via a unimolecular reaction pathway to generate ethylene. (iii) For isomerization reactions of n-hexane, 8-MR channels of H-MOR minimize the free energy of required carbocationic transition states, possibly via partial confinement effects that increase the entropy of the transition state at the expense of the reaction enthalpy. These findings show that confinement in zeolite channels influences rate and selectivity of hydrocarbon reactions more fundamentally than simple considerations of size and shape. Bio: Aditya Bhan received his Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 2000. Subsequently, he moved to West Lafayette, Indiana and joined the group of Nick Delgass at Purdue, where he developed microkinetic models to describe propane aromatization on proton- and gallium- form ZSM-5 materials for his PhD. In 2005, he moved to the University of California at Berkeley to pursue a post-doctoral stint in Enrique Iglesia's group to study the kinetics, mechanism, and site requirements of dimethyl ether carbonylation. In September 2007, Dr. Bhan took up his present position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bhan leads a research group that focuses on the structural and mechanistic characterization of inorganic molecular sieve catalysts useful in energy conversion and petrochemical synthesis. His research at Minnesota has been recognized with the McKnight Land Grant Professor and 3M Non-tenured Faculty awards. On Tuesday morning, March 15th, from 6:30 to 8:30am the following ChE servers will be down as the server room they are located in Civl will be having semi-annual preventive maintenance done on the A/C unit: catalyst faucet gibbs0 gibbs1 gibbs1 ion surge tipstream vps4 (Print Server) atom will stay up so most normal day to day things such as logging in in the morning should not be affected, however printing to group printers will not work until the VPS4 is back up around 8:30am.
