Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to inform that Antonios G. Mikos (MS 1985, PhD 1988), Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering, Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Director of the Center for Excellence in Tissue Engineering at Rice University, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. Tony is recognized "for seminal contributions and visionary leadership in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine." He is now among the very few scientists and engineers who have been elected to two different National Academies. His accomplishments bring great recognition to our School! Faculty Positions Ad

Dear Colleagues, Just fyi... Our faculty positions ad was approved today and is already posted at the CACHE website. Tomorrow, it will be emailed to the US ChE Heads and also sent for publication in CEP and C&E News. We had prior ads for the Nichols Chair and for the PSE position - this ad combines those two with our newly authorized pharma biologics position. Hi again, My first email has most likely not arrived to those that were (and most likely are still) affected. Here is some more information for future reference whenever you happen to see this. Currently ITAP is reporting that the issue may be resolved by 4pm. If in the future you suspect issues with your Exchange (Outlook) account you can try these steps: See if you can connect via the web interface at http://owa.purdue.edu Check ITAP's service status on this page: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/infrastructure/operations/change/calendar.cfm Currently the Outlook/Exchange issue is listed as the second item ("Active Directory Outage"). Check ECN's home page - when there are issues affecting a large portion of Engineering they will put a red banner at the top of the page with information: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECN I'd suggest bookmarking these three pages now so the next time Outlook isn't behaving you can check the pages. Also, when you have a computer issue the best place to send a request for help is this page: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECN/AboutUs/ContactUs Remember to select Chemical Engineering for the department. Outlook Issues

As many/most of you that use Outlook have noticed, there is an issue that's been going on for at least the last 15-20 minutes where you may be losing your connection to Outlook and keep getting asked for your credentials (I also just had some old appointment reminders pop up). What I know at the moment is that ITAP is aware of the issue and are working to resolve it. As a short term fix those that normally use Outlook and have "exchange" accounts (most but not all Outlook users), you can use the Web interface to see most of your email and calendar. Student Recognition * Graduate Student Kathryn Smith received the Fran Allen PhD Fellowship award from IBM for her "outstanding technical accomplishments and commitment to mentoring and community-building. * Graduate Student Aniruddha Kelkar will be serving on the Purdue Community Standards Board (CSB) starting this semester, which adjudicates student conduct cases. More details are available on their website http://www.purdue.edu/odos/osrr/csb.php. * Senior Candace Corso is the President for the Professional Practice Ambassadors student organization, which is comprised of students from multiple disciplines at Purdue, including all engineering schools. Dear All, A friendly reminder. For those who have not responded. On Friday, October 19, I will be hosting a ChE Bake Sale in the Atrium from 9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon. The College of Engineering is having each department do a bake sale. We are in competition to see which School can sell the most. For this Adventure, I need more volunteers to bake something for the sale. Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you will bring something in for the sale. United Way

Dear All, A friendly reminder to those who have not turned in their United Way card. Please return it whether you donate or not. Please put you name at the bottom of the envelop. Please return them to me at your earliest convenience. At the end of the campaign (November 9), for those who turn in the envelop, I will put their name in a drawing and the winners will receive a United Way T-Shirt. United Way is a wonderful foundation, which helps developing solutions for poverty, tackling homelessness and supporting groundbreaking reading programs in local schools .... United Way of Greater Lafayette is right there, helping build extraordinary futures for many, and we need your support. For the past 23 years, Purdue's United Way campaign has helped our community connect, educate, and involve students, faculty, staff and retirees in the care and nurturing of our local community. United Way of Greater Lafayette's goal this year is $4.7 million. Purdue needs to raise $745,000 of this amount. Please make a donation again this year or give for the first time to assure the important work of United Way of Greater Lafayette will continue.
