We call ourselves "faculty" and "staff", as if there is a difference. But at the core universities are non-for-profit businesses where all the roles are important, and the mission of education, discovery and creativity is shared by everyone. Faculty experience coupled with appreciation of the mission of a university is good preparation for academic leadership. I will present some observations and opinions about career trajectories that cross the faculty/staff boundary leading to increased leadership and account-ability in a research university. An intriguing feature of academic career trajectories, not often found in the for-profit world, is the possibility of returning to one's roots as a faculty member after a foray into administration. Hence, a professor does not have to forego the love of profession forever and can make that "safe return" to the position that originally brought her to academe after serving as a university leader. Bio: John Anderson is Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. From 2007-2015 he served as the president of Illinois Institute of Technology. He received a bachelor of chemical engineering at the University of Delaware and a PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Illinois (Urbana). He has served on the faculties of Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. His past academic leadership positions include chair of biomedical engineering, department head of chemical engineering and dean of engineering at Carnegie Mellon, and provost and executive vice president at Case Western Reserve. At Carnegie Mellon he was also University Professor, Gulf Professor of Chemical Engineering, and the (first) Robert Mehrabian Endowed Chair in Engineering. As a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, he was visiting professor at MIT. He has also held visiting professorships at Landbouwuniversiteit Wageningen (the Netherlands) and the University of Melbourne (Australia). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Other honors include the Acrivos Professional Progress Award of AIChE, the National Engineering Award of AAES (nominated by AIChE), and appointment to the National Science Board (2014-2020). His research and teaching interests are in membrane separations, electrokinetic phenomena, colloids and polymers, fluid dynamics and diffusional processes. Electrical shutdown old Forney - Tue Sept 22, 9-11 am

Good afternoon, On Tuesday, September 22, between 9.00 and 11.00 am we may experience partial electrical shut down on the old side of Forney Hall. As part of the Forney East Wing renovation some electrical panels are getting upgraded and the interruptions are unavoidable. The electrical work was scheduled during the day to give everyone an opportunity to immediately restart equipment affected by the shutdown. Let me know if you have any questions. Clarification - RE: Aspen license status

My apologies, my last message was confusing, Aspen is working and will continue to work until 12am tonight. At that point new sessions won't be able to be started, we anticipate the new license will be up and running by 8am tomorrow (So no new Aspen session from 12am to 8am). Forney addition to be evacuated during fall break for construction work

As you are aware, an entire wing of our building is under renovation. An important part of the project involves installing an air handling unit. A crane will have to lift this large item and the structural steel supporting it on the Forney roof. While the crane operates, all the areas directly under the crane operating area have to be evacuated, as a safety precaution. There will be no interruption of electricity or other utilities, unless something goes wrong. This involves a good part of the addition: * Third floor: 3124, 3126, the hallway outside these labs, 3140, 3149, 3190, 3192, addition restrooms * Second floor: 2107, 2120 through 2128, 2131, 2135, 2137, 2142, 2144, 2145, 2146, 2148,2190, 2191, 2193, 2194, 2196, hallways where the lockers are and the restrooms in the addition * First floor: 1120 through 1128, 1137, 1142, 1144, 1146, 1148, 1190, 1191, 1192,A, 1193, 1194, 1196, the hallway where the lockers are, restrooms in addition * Ground floor: G111, G118 suite, G124, G125, G140, atrium & restrooms in addition * Basement: the entire basement in the addition, especially because two stairwells are affected * The stairwell from the Physics side - all floors As of today, part of this work is scheduled for the following dates: * Fall break - from Saturday, October 10, through Tuesday, October 13, 2015 * Winter break 2015-16 - days will be communicated in advance * Spring break 2016 - days will be communicated in advance If you have an office or lab in the areas mentioned above you will not be able to access your space during the times mentioned above. The other people with labs or offices in the addition will be indirectly affected as they will have to use different routes to get to their space. We are encouraging all people affected directly or indirectly to avoid being in the addition at these times. Please plan accordingly. I will work with the affected staff to create temporary work space in other areas of the building, such as the computer labs. Grad students can to the same. If this evacuation creates any difficulties with research experiments let me know as soon as possible. I appreciate everyone's understanding and cooperation while we work on improving Forney Hall.
