It is now time to complete the on-line safety refresher training, which is required for all ChE faculty, staff, graduate students, post-doctoral research associates and visiting researchers/scholars. You can access the training material and take the quiz on any device linked to the internet, including mobile devices such as a smart phone, iPad or other tablets. Please follow the instructions below and complete this safety refresher training by the end of Sunday, May 7, 2017. Instructions: 1. Access the ChE safety website https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety and click on the Annual Safety Training Refresher<https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ChE/SafetyTraining.h…> link under the Training heading. Alternatively, you can follow this link: https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ChE/SafetyTraining.h… to access the dedicated safety refresher web page. 2. Log-in with your Purdue credentials and click on the link that best describes your status in our School to access the training material relevant to you. 3. Read and understand the training material and follow the active links in the document (where applicable) for more information on specific topics. 4. Follow the "Take the quiz" link at the end of the document and take the short quiz to complete this part of the training. Once you complete the quiz, you will receive an email confirming that you completed the training (or part of the training, depending on your status in the School). Save this email and keep it for your own records. 5. If applicable, read the updated lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) developed for the lab you work in (or, as PI, are responsible for) and complete the certification page (page 86 in the CHP template posted on REM's website: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/home/booklets/chp2014.pdf) 6. Dear Colleagues, It gives me great pleasure to announce that Jenni Mamph will return full time to Chemical Engineering as a Purdue employee. After 2.5 years during which she has been a PRF employee working mainly for the Development Office, Jenni will transition back to ChE as Administrative Assistant starting with May 1, 2017. She will primarily work with me, assist with building operations & maintenance, and contribute to special projects. In this talk, I will present my research toward developing thin film semiconductor solar absorber materials that can be solution-processed (thereby avoiding costly, high-vacuum batch processes) toward the ultimate goal of manufacturing solar panels in a low-cost, roll-to-roll process. My research has primarily advanced two methods for solution processed PV. In one method, semiconducting nanocrystals are synthesized and then suspended in an appropriate solvent to form an ink. The ink is coated on a substrate and then annealed to form a polycrystalline absorber layer for solar energy. I will discuss my research in improving the nanocrystal synthesis method and annealing conditions leading to the fabrication of 9.0% efficient Cu¬2ZnSn(S,Se)4 solar cells. Another promising route to thin film PV is by directly coating dissolved precursor solutions (rather than first forming nanocrystals) and annealing this coating to decompose the precursors and form the polycrystalline absorber layer. Our group has recently developed a solution chemistry using mixtures of thiols and amines that allows for the dissolution of an incredible range of precursor materials including metals, metal salts, metal chalcogenides, and elemental chalcogens (e.g. Se, Te). I will present my work in collaboration with Professor Hilkka Kenttämaa's group toward understanding the chemistry of this solvent system.
