Special info session on ISP recertification and completion of self-audit forms

Hello Everyone, To better prepare for the recertification meeting with REM and to better understand how to complete the self-audit forms correctly, the ChE Safety Committee is organizing a special info session on this topic. Eric Butt, Assistant Director of REM, will present on this topic and will answer our questions. This event is scheduled for next week on Thursday, May 18, from 12 noon-1 pm, in FRNY B124. We encourage everyone to participate and recommend that at least one person from each group participate, preferably the safety officer. Pizza and soft drinks/water will be provided at this event. CONFIRMED - NO LOSS OF AIR CONDITIONING

All - I am pleased to announce that a solution has been found and will be implemented so the building will not be shut off from the chilled water supply which cools our building. If all goes as planned, the building will stay in normal operation. However, the Project is still happening and on Wednesday 5-17-17 , the drive between FRNY and Physics will be closed which means you will not be able to access our dock area from Northwestern Ave. If you have questions please contact me. Safety awareness training session

Hello Everyone, I scheduled a new safety awareness training sessions for: Monday, May 15, 2017 from 1:30-2:30 pm in FRNY 1043. All new employees and researchers need to have initial safety training. If you have new people joining your groups for research this summer, they will need safety training before they start working (e.g. SURF students, visitors, exchange students, masters students, etc.). Please ask them to attend this session. If any student completed the safety training already, please ask them to contact me to check if they still need to attend. Most of our undergraduate students already have the initial training and would need to take the online refresher. Please refer to the documents I sent yesterday regarding additional safety requirements for new researchers. Start of self-audits of ChE labs and offices

Hello Everyone, It is now time to complete the Annual Safety Review of all ChE laboratories AND offices. These reviews are part of our Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) and are required to obtain our annual recertification with the University. The safety audit of multiple offices can be inventoried on the same form. The timeline for 2017 is: - May - June - self-audits of all laboratories and offices - June - Safety inspections of all ChE laboratories and offices - May - July - address deficiencies identified in self-audits and inspections - August - Recertification Review meeting with REM 1. Self-Audits: The ISP Self-Audit checklist can be found on the ChE School's website, under the "Laboratory Safety Requirements" heading: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety , or on the REM's website: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/home/forms/ispcheck.pdf The first seven sections have universal questions that apply to every area. Sections 8 to 27 have questions related to specialized operations; research laboratories and shops should address all sections. All self-audit checklists must be signed by PI/supervisor, not necessarily by the person completing the self-audit. Please return completed self-audits to Gabriela Nagy in FRNY G041D by 5 pm on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. In addition to the self-audit, please review and update the door posting, hazard assessment (should be placed inside the lab, near the entrance), chemical inventory (Form HCP4) and employee exposure list (Form HCP5) and lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan for your work area. They should be accurate and dated within the last six months. If your group is keeping SDSs saved electronically, please make sure you follow the recommendations issued by the safety committee that are listed HERE<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/Guidelines%20fo…>. 2. Inspections: The ChE Safety Committee will perform unannounced safety inspections of all laboratories and offices during June, and will send the inspection reports to the faculty responsible for those areas. 3. Deficiencies: Deficiencies identified in your audits and in the ChE Safety Committee inspections will need to be addressed. The ChE Safety Committee (list posted on https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety ) is available to help you. 4. Recertification Review: The review includes unscheduled visits to our laboratories and offices by REM. The recertification review meeting with REM is scheduled for August 15, 2017. Good morning, everyone, In order to assist ChE group safety officers to fulfill their duties in this role, the ChE Safety Committee developed two documents to clarify the responsibilities of safety officers and give some guidelines on items to be covered during safety training of new researchers.
