Kanatzidis Department of Chemistry Northwestern University "Panoscopic Approach to High Performance Thermoelectric Materials" September 3, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The nanostructuring approach to highly efficient thermoelectrics has produced a paradigm shift and ushered in a new era of investigation for bulk thermoelectrics. The new approach shows considerable promise to enhance the "contra-indicated" parameters of high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity. Currently lead chalcogenides hold the record in figure of merit for high temperature power generation applications. This is achieved by introducing endotaxial nanostructures in bulk host materials to significantly reduce lattice thermal conductivity via effective scattering of heat carrying phonon through hierarchical architecture of nanostructured thermoelectrics. Band alignment strategies are then applied to maximize the charge transport and the power factor. In band alignment hole transport is controlled by minimizing band offsets of the valence bands between the host material and the embedded second phases. The smaller valence band offset allows better carrier transmission between two endotaxial components, thus minimizing hole mobility deterioration and allowing a larger power factor to be achieved. The presentation will highlight recent advances in our group and the move toward tellurium free systems. Bio: Mercouri G Kanatzidis received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from the University of Iowa in 1984, after obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree from Aristotle University in Greece. He was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University from 1985 to 1987. He earned the distinction of University Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Michigan State University where he served for 19 years since 1987. In 2006 he moved to Northwestern University where he was named Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor. He also carries a joint appointment as a Senior Scientist in the Materials Sciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He has been visiting professor at the University of Nantes (Institute des Materiaux Jean Rouxel) in 1996 and the University of Muenster in 2003. His research has generated seminal work in metal chalcogenide chemistry through the development of advanced thermoelectric materials, use of novel "solvents" for solid state synthesis including flux methods, as well as hydrothermal and solvothermal techniques. He is also active in the field of solar energy materials, phase-change materials, the design of framework solids, intermetallic phases and nanocomposite materials. The bulk of his work is described in the more than 700 research publications. .

Aspen Update

Hi, I'm sorry to report that Aspen has said we will not get an updated license until Tuesday afternoon<x-apple-data-detectors://0> at the earliest. I'd hoped to have the new license installed today but just was notified it will not be until tomorrow<x-apple-data-detectors://1>. My apologies for any issues this causes. Aspen licensing issues

I am currently waiting to get an updated license from Aspen, the current license expires tomorrow (Saturday) at midnight. If I do not get the license by then, Aspen will not function on Sunday and on Monday until the new license can be installed. I apologize for this potential but wanted to give those that use Aspen warning before Sunday. If the license arrives & can be installed before Saturday midnight I will let you know. Fire alarm earlier today

Hello Everyone, I just wanted to let you know that the fire alarm was activated earlier today due to a malfunctioning water flow sensor in the sprinkler system situated in one of the rooms in the basement (new wing of the building). Let's hope it won't be activated again soon. Network 'outages' yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon there were a few times we lost network connectivity for a few minutes (first time was around 2:40pm and again between 6 & 6:30pm). The immediate effect for those logged in was their computers seems to 'lock up' for a few minutes. Once the connections were restored you may have noticed on your Windows 'desktops' that your icons disappeared along with some other strangeness in the way your computer acted. If you have not logged out since yesterday I would strongly suggest you log off and back on. Sharing files securely with others outside ChE

Hi, There are lots of ways to share files and some occasionally have the need to send or receive files "securely." Purdue offers a service called "File Locker" that anyone at Purdue can use to upload files to a secure location and then send the recipient a link to download the file(s). You can also send a request to someone and have them upload files to you via the site. The site can be accessed here: https://filelocker.purdue.edu/ you log in with your career account. The page is self-explanatory and there are some simple help links on the page. Maximum file size is about 2gig. Graduate Seminar Questionnaire

Dear ChE Graduate Students, During the last few Conversations with the School Head, the ChE 690 - Graduate Seminar has been an important subject of discussion. Based on your feedback and after brainstorming with several students, faculty and staff, last year we implemented a number of changes to make this a more meaningful experience: * allowed students to attend 2 seminars per semester outside the School * requested speakers to prepare presentations at a reasonable technical level * put extra effort into scheduling to ensure an even distribution of topics * invited one industrial speaker per semester. During the spring 2013 Conversation, it was suggested to introduce a questionnaire to survey each seminar; this will help us to develop a data base of speakers and rank topics, which we hope will lead to further improvement of our Graduate Seminar program. The questionnaire is now ready and will be distributed after each seminar by Cristina Farmus as a link in an email. Each survey will be active until the date of the following seminar; the responses will be analyzed at the end of each semester and made available to all faculty and graduate students. The responses are anonymous and voluntary, it takes less than one minute to complete the questionnaire. I encourage you to complete this survey after each seminar and give us your feedback about how to make this a truly enriching experience of your Purdue ChE graduate studies.
