This year's Boeing Lecture is given by Lt. General C.D. Moore - the commander of the Air Force Life Cycle Mamnagement Center at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and the title of his talk is "Preserving aerospace combat advantages in a fiscally constrained environment." Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering MELLICHAMP LECTURE Prof. Brian Pfleger College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin "Sustainability via Synthetic Biology - A Growing Role for Biotechnology in the Chemical Industry" Thursday, October 3, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Finding a sustainable alternative for today's petrochemical industry is a major challenge facing chemical engineers and society at large. To be sustainable, routes for converting carbon dioxide and light into organic compounds for use as both fuels and chemical building blocks must be identified, understood, and engineered. Advances in synthetic biology and other biological engineering disciplines have expanded the scope of what can be produced by a living organism. As in other engineering disciplines, synthetic biologists want to apply a general understanding of math and science (e.g. biology, biochemistry) to construct complex systems from well-characterized parts (e.g. DNA, protein). Bio: Brian received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University in 2000 and earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2005 from the University of California-Berkeley under the supervision of Jay Keasling. Brian's thesis research focused on developing methods of controlling gene expression in bacteria that could be applied to enhancing the biosynthesis of pharmaceuticals. After graduating, he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of David Sherman at the University of Michigan, where he studied how six Bacillus anthracis enzymes assemble a natural product essential for iron acquisition and pathogenesis. Brian is currently an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering with appointments in Biomedical Engineering, the Microbiology Doctoral Training Program, and the graduate program in Cell and Molecular Biology. Brian's research has been recognized with young investigator awards from 3M, NSF (CAREER), DOE (Early Career), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR-YIP). Brian also received the Benjamin Smith Reynolds teaching award from the UW-Madison College of Engineering for his efforts to introduce undergraduates to biotechnology. .

Doors open at 6 p.m., and the lecture is free and open to the public. Following myriad academic and presidential appointments, Tyson is currently the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. He also is a member of NASA's prestigious Advisory Council. He curates a Twitter feed (@neiltyson) of more than a million followers, for whom he drops the science 140 characters at a time. As his program's name implies, Tyson will base his topics of discussion on the most recent, noteworthy, and exciting events in space science. It's a talk tailored to Tyson's mission to ensure that science remains a lively, vivid topic in American discourse - communicated in ways that connect with us all.

Dear Colleagues, I am writing to thank you for your help and participation in the OChE and IAC events last week. By all accounts, both were successful events, enjoyed greatly by our OChE honorees, the IAC members and the ChE Ambassadors. I was present at the Mackey arena yesterday when Alan Fox received his Pinnacle award - the highest Purdue recognition for donors, who give $1 million or more. This is the 8th year in a row that a ChE alumnus has received the Pinnacle award (2013 was already covered by Jerry Skidmore, who received the honor in 2-13, in Naples, FL - so now we have 2 for 2013) and our 9th year is also secured with Jay Ihlenfeld in Feb 2014! We are blessed to have such accomplished, loyal and generous alumni! Thank you for all that you do to make our School a wonderful place to educate our students, to conduct cutting-edge research, and for us to work - dedicated and motivated people are the most important and critical ingredient for success of any organization and we have it in abundance! Inauguration of the Alan H. Fox (BSChE '55) Unit Operations Lab - 9:30 am, Friday, Sep 13

Dear Colleagues, As you are aware, for the last year and a half, we have been doing an upgrade of our senior Unit Operations Lab. It consisted of retiring some experiments, introducing some new ones, incorporation of labVIEW for data acquisition in several experiments, physical renovation of the lab (including painting) and a new skid-proof floor, introduction of additional safety features and a "museum" on the 1st floor level to house the now and previously retired equipment/experiments along with the date when they were first introduced. For this, starting from 2-12 until this past summer, we raised $550K to carry out the upgrade - from corporations, foundations, alumni and friends; in response to our proposal, the Purdue R&R fund also contributed $85,000 of the total. I am pleased to report that the upgrade is now complete and our seniors are experiencing the new and improved Unit Ops Lab this fall. I take this opportunity to thank the faculty, staff and students who helped with the numerous aspects associated with the upgrade. In addition, we sought potential alumni donors to endow the Unit Ops Lab for a $1 million naming opportunity, which would generate ~$45K annually to provide for running the lab and for maintenance and future upgrades, in perpetuity. I am pleased to report that Alan H. Fox (BS ChE '55) accepted our request. At 9:30 am this Friday, Sep 13, we will inaugurate the "Alan H. Fox Unit Operations Laboratory of Chemical Engineering." Alan will be with us then, as will be the IAC members (16 in attendance) - as you know, we have the IAC meeting all day on Friday and this event is built into the meeting schedule. I request your attendance at the inauguration event, which will include ribbon cutting, refreshments and a tour of the lab. Hi, It hasn't happened lately but I wanted to send out a reminder that if you are using Exchange for your email (You usually, but not necessarily use Outlook in the office to read your mail) and you also use a phone or tablet to access your email/calendar, you need to shut off the phone and or tablet BEFORE changing your password or else you may lock your account. ITAP has specific instructions on this page: https://support.purdue.edu/goldanswers/183871 If you do lock your account there is nothing I can do to fix your problem except call ITAP and have them unlock your account but you can also do this (make sure to disable your phone / tablet before they unlock it or it will just get locked again).
