Power outage

BE ADVISED - There was a power outage for most of the campus at 1:30 am yesterday morning which affected numerous items in the building. Physical plant is in the process of checking all air handlers, Fume hoods , air compressors etc. that should have reset on their own but did not. They will have everything back into normal operation hopefully soon. Please contact me if your area is still having problems if not corrected within the hour. Thanks. Jeff Valley

FRNY is next building in our list, and we would like to start there in the next day or two, possibly Monday morning (9/24/18). We will start on the top floor and will work our way around to the rooms that have exterior windows, and move to the next floor down until we complete the building. This should include all rooms that have blinds, or windows to the outside. It does not include things like door glass, or interior walls made of glass. The cleaning will take place between the hours of 5:00 AM and 1:30 PM, Monday - Friday. The door to each room will be left as we find it: if locked, we will lock it again when we leave. If unlocked, we will leave it unlocked. If you could please have all items removed from the windowsills that would be very much appreciated. We cannot clean windows that have obstacles in front of the glass. If our crewmembers arrive to clean a window and the occupant does not want them cleaned, we will pass on to the next room. Will you notify the building occupants please so they will be prepared for our visit? This will take more than one day to complete the building. Since joining the MSE department in 1999 after a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a National Research Council Post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD, he has developed a research program around the construction of new materials and nanostructures via molecular solution assembly mechanisms. Areas of focus are biomaterials and materials for nanotechnology and energy applications through organic/inorganic hybrids. His honors include an NSF Career Award, the DuPont Young Faculty Award, the Dillon medal from the American Physical Society and fellowship in the American Physical Society and American Chemical Society. Currently, Darrin also serves as Editor in Chief of Soft Matter, a new interdisciplinary journal from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom. Abstract: Self-assembly of molecules is an attractive materials construction strategy due to its simplicity in application. By considering peptidic molecules in the bottom-up materials self-assembly design process, one can take advantage of inherently biomolecular attributes; intramolecular folding events, secondary structure, and electrostatic interactions; in addition to more traditional self-assembling molecular attributes such as amphiphilicty, to define hierarchical material structure and consequent properties. A new solution assembled system comprised of theoretically designed coiled coil bundle motifs will be introduced. The molecules and nanostructures are not natural sequences and provide opportunity for arbitrary nanostructure creation with peptides. With control of the display of all amino acid side chains (both natural and non-natural) throughout the peptide bundles, desired physical and covalent (through appropriate "click" chemistry) interactions have been designed to produce one and two-dimensional nanostructures. One-dimensional nanostructures span exotically rigid rod molecules that produce a wide variety of liquid crystal phases to semi-flexible chains, the flexibility of which are controlled by the interbundle linking chemistry. The two dimensional nanostructure is formed by physical interactions and are nanostructures not observed in nature. All of the assemblies are responsive to temperature since the individual bundle building blocks are physically stabilized coiled coil bundles that can be melted and reformed with temperature. Additional, novel nanostructures to be discussed include uniform nanotubes as well as the templated growth of metallic nanoparticle on and in peptide nanostructures. Included in the discussion will be molecule design, hierarchical assembly pathway design and control, click chemistry reactions, and the characterization of nanostructure as well as inherent material properties (e.g. extreme stiffness, responsiveness to temperature and pH, stability in aqueous and organic solvents). Out of office/Change in schedule

FYI..... I will be out of the office the week of September 17 - 21. Additionally, following that week I will be on a reduced schedule until approximately the beginning of December. During that time my working hours will be 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Safety awareness training session - tomorrow

Hello Everyone, The next safety awareness training sessions is scheduled for tomorrow, September 7, 2018 from 10:30 - 11:30 am in FRNY 1142. All new employees and researchers need to have initial safety training. If you have new people joining your groups for research, they will need safety training before they start working (e.g. visitors, exchange students, post-docs, etc.). Please ask them to attend this session. Most of our undergraduate students already have the initial training, and would need to take the online refresher. Students from other departments, doing research in our labs, will need this initial training. Brown water

BE ADVISED - As some have noticed and reported, the water coming out of the restroom sinks is a brownish color. Repairs were made on the hot water pumps this morning and when they turned the water back on to full pressure, it broke loose any residue in the supply lines. Turning on the taps and letting them run for a period of time will flush the system out and it will return to normal. Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience.
