Polymeric materials comprising mechano-chemically active components can undergo spontaneous structural rearrangements that generate internal stresses and motion. These stresses can be particularly large in the case of liquid crystalline polymers, where elasticity plays an important role on the structure of the underlying materials. This lecture will focus on the relationship between structure, activity, and motion in lyotropic liquid crystalline polymeric systems. More specifically, results will be presented for actin and tubulin suspensions, where activity is generated by protein motors. A distinctive feature of these biopolymers is that characteristic contour lengths can range from hundreds of nanometers to tens of microns, thereby making them amenable for study by optical microscopy. By relying on molecular and meso-scale models, it is possible to arrive at a comprehensive description of these suspensions that helps explain the connections between molecular structure, the formation and shape of distinct topological defects, activity, and defect dynamics. One of the outcomes of such a description is the realization that hydrodynamic interactions can in some cases exacerbate or mitigate the elasticity of the underlying materials, leading to non-intuitive phenomena that do not arise at equilibrium. ChE Safety Committee Openings for Graduate Students

Hello Everyone! Siddhartha Akkiraju and Arnav Deshpande have served for nearly two years as graduate students on the ChE Safety Committee and I want to take this opportunity and thank them for all their help and input as committee members; they have been very active and valuable members of our Safety Committee. The ChE Safety Committee has now two (2) openings for graduate students. We are looking for two enthusiastic, motivated and safety oriented graduate students to join our active Safety Committee. An ideal candidate is someone who still has to complete about 3 years of graduate studies and who performs research in a lab. Typically, graduate students serve as members of the ChE Safety Committee for a period of two years. We would like the new members to join us this summer (June 2022), as trainees, and then with full responsibilities from August 2022. Some of the Safety Committee members responsibilities are: * attend the safety committee meetings (once a month) and actively participate in discussions and committee activities * report unsafe conditions and unsafe practices/acts * assist in addressing safety issues/concerns * contribute with ideas and suggestions for improvement of safety in our School * follow safety procedures and rules and be an example for others for work safely * help with the safety inspections throughout the year, and with preparations for the ISP Recertification Review with REM * help investigating safety incidents, if/when necessary * share safety information with colleagues, etc. If you know someone who you think would be a good member of the safety committee, or if you feel this would be a good fit for you, please send your nomination or intent to join, and a short supporting statement/justification describing why you or your nominee should be considered for this opening, by email to: Gabriela Nagy: nagyg(a)purdue.edu<mailto:nagyg@purdue.edu>, by 5 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2022.
