Dear CHE Community, I am happy to announce that starting today we have a new employee, Robert Cramsey, who is starting as the School's Senior Maintenance Mechanic. Robert has experience working across Purdue and joins us from his previous position as a Zone 3 Maintenance Technician, so he is very familiar with Purdue's internal work order processes and policies. He also has experience in construction ranging from doing some plumbing, finishing drywall, painting, and carpentry to name a few. We couldn't be more happy to have Robert join our team and are positive he will become an asset to our School. Safety inspection of ALL labs and offices in FRNY - next week

Hello everyone, In preparation for the ISP recertification with EHS in March, members of the ChE Safety Committee will conduct safety inspections of ALL labs and offices, starting Monday, February 5, 2024. We will use the forms in the first 2 tabs of the attached Excel workbook. If you have a sensitive experiment running and your lab can't be inspected now, please place a clearly visible note on the entrance door to the lab, and the inspection team will respect that. Reports of the inspections will be sent to PIs and safety officers (for labs) and to occupants of labs (if needed). Any identified deficiencies will need to be corrected within the time specified on the forms. Instructions on how to follow up regarding correction of deficiencies will be communicated when the results of the safety inspections are shared. Thank you for your commitment to safety! Please remember that ALL offices and labs/storage rooms need to be audited. Multiple offices can be included on the same form, but each lab/storage space needs a form. Please correct identified deficiencies, and record the corrections in the "Comments" section on last page of the form before submitting the forms. You should also record the deficiencies that were not corrected, and list the steps taken to correct them. Purdue administrators and public safety officials are working with city and county personnel to actively monitor the weather and they ask everyone to remain aware of possibly changing conditions. University officials continue to monitor area surface conditions - and encourage employees to do the same - to be aware of any local travel restrictions that might be in place. Those planning to travel on area roads should monitor their county travel status. Safety updates and reminders

Good morning, everyone, and happy New Year! I wanted to communicate a few updates as we start the 2024 year, please see below: 1. The safety committee recently approved the extension of the "One Glove" policy areas in FRNY to include staircases and the area connecting the new and old wing of FRNY on second floor, as shown on page 2-4 in the attached document (the areas where the "One Glove" policy applies are in blue). Please note that there is no change to the "One Glove" policy area in the basement of the old wing. As a reminder, lab coats and one glove may be worn in the areas where the "One Glove" policy applies, but one hand must remain ungloved at all times to avoid contamination of public surfaces. 2. The Gas Cylinder Handling Procedures for FRNY Building<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/Gas%20cylinder%…> document was updated to include procedures for returning gas cylinders to the newly added "Return" area. The document is attached and is also available on the ChE safety website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety under "Laboratory Safety requirements". Please remember to retrieve your gas cylinders from the "New arrivals" area promptly after you receive the email from Jason Davenport notifying you that your gas cylinders have arrived. 3. If your group missed the RightCycle Program launch event on 10/25, or just recently decided to participate, please let me know; I'll provide collection boxes and/or stickers and logistics for a successful implementation of the program in your lab(s). As a reminder, our School partnered with Kimberly Clark Professional and joined the RightCycle Program which allows for recycling of non-hazardous, Kimberly Clark branded nitrile gloves (e.g.: purple gloves). The gloves are collected in labs in designated boxes (either the boxes provided by Kimberly Clark, or any other collection container labeled with a special sticker), and once collection boxes are full they are emptied in the designated gaylord box located in FRNY G135. Please get in touch with Jason Davenport (jwdavenport(a)purdue.edu<mailto:jwdavenport@purdue.edu>) during working hours (Mon-Fri, 8 am - 4 pm) to empty your lab's collection box, and then reuse it. Please note that ONLY Kimberly Clark branded, non-hazardous nitrile gloves (those that you would normally dispose of via regular trash) should be collected as part of the RightCycle program; please dispose of your contaminated gloves as hazardous waste through EHS. Dear All, Happy New Year! I am delighted to announce a special seminar by a visiting professor, Prof. Kyu Hyun from Pusan University, Korea. Prof. Hyun is a well-regarded expert in rheology and will be visiting our School for his sabbatical from January until December this year. This is an informal talk, and anyone interested is welcome to attend. The details are as follows. Time/Location: 10:30 - 11:30 AM on Thursday, January 11th , 2024. Room 3059 FRNY. Title: Characterization of Complex Fluids by Dynamic Oscillatory Shear Test Biosketch: Dr. Kyu Hyun is a Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering and the Vice Dean in the College of Engineering at Pusan National University (PNU), South Korea. He earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University (SNU) in 1998, followed by a MS degree in 2000 and a PhD in 2005, both in Chemical Engineering, also from SNU. Dr. Hyun has an extensive academic background, including postdoctoral research at various prestigious institutions, such as the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Deustsches Elektonen-Synchrotron, Germany. He has held several key positions at PNU, including the Head of the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Dr. Hyun has made significant contributions to the field of rheology, particularly in nonlinear oscillatory shear tests and complex fluid characterization. His research has been widely recognized, leading to awards such as the 'Distinguished Young Rheologist' from TA Instruments (USA), the Humboldt Fellowship from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), and the 'Young Rheologist' Award from the Korean Society of Rheology (KSR). Abstract: Dynamic oscillatory shear tests are common in rheology and have been used to investigate a wide range of soft matter and complex fluids including polymer melts and solutions, block copolymers, biological macromolecules, polyelectrolytes, surfactants, suspensions, emulsions, and beyond. More specifically, small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) tests have become the canonical method for probing the linear viscoelastic properties of these complex fluids because of the firm theoretical background and the ease of implementing suitable test protocols. However, in most processing operations the deformations can be large and rapid: it is therefore the nonlinear material properties that control the system response. A full sample characterization thus requires well-defined nonlinear test protocols. Consequently, there has been a recent renewal of interest in exploiting large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests to investigate and quantify the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of complex fluids. In terms of the experimental input, both LAOS and SAOS require the user to select appropriate ranges of strain amplitude (γ0) and frequency (ω). However, there is a distinct difference in the analysis of experimental output, i.e. the material response. At sufficiently large strain amplitude, the material response will become nonlinear in LAOS tests and the familiar material functions used to quantify the linear behavior in SAOS tests are no longer sufficient. For example, the definitions of the linear viscoelastic moduli G' (ω) and G"(ω) are based inherently on the assumption that the stress response is purely sinusoidal (linear). However, a nonlinear stress response is not a perfect sinusoid, and therefore the viscoelastic moduli are not uniquely defined; other methods are needed for quantifying the nonlinear material response under LAOS deformation. In this presentation, I first summarize the typical nonlinear responses observed with complex fluids under LAOS deformations, then introduce and critically compare several methods that quantify the nonlinear oscillatory stress response.
