ISP Self-Audit Checklist Revised

ChE Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students, The ISP Self-Audit<http://www.purdue.edu/rem/home/forms/ispcheck.pdf> checklist has been recently revised. In this revision, sections have been rearranged and several questions have been refined. The first seven sections now have universal questions that apply to every area. Sections 8 thru 24 have questions related to specialized operations. If an area qualifies as an office, common (e.g., conference room, kitchenette), or computer laboratory and does not involve the handling of, use of, or exposure to hazardous chemicals, machinery, equipment, animals, or biological agents, only the first seven sections of the self-audit need to completed. If in doubt about the type of area being audited, please address all sections. Research laboratories and shops should address all sections. The ISP Self-Audit checklist is updated periodically. Always check the REM website for the most up-to-date version. We will be using the new version for all ChE self audits going ahead. Thank you. Linda Linda S. Safety Update: HPLC Waste Requirements - Please Read

ChE Faculty, Staff and Students, Effective immediately, all containers used for collecting HPLC waste must have a sealed cap. It is no longer acceptable to seal the container with parafilm or aluminum foil. REM has developed a useful web page that describes this new requirement and offers acceptable alternatives: http://www.purdue.edu/rem/hmm/hplcwaste.htm. Many of these processes have significant opportunities for cost savings and productivity enhancements. However, advances are currently unrealized due to the lack of understanding of particle flow behavior in industrial scale processes. Reliable simulation tools can aid in this understanding and accelerate the achievement of substantial process improvements. Recent advancements in multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can help facilitate these improvements. However, state-of-the-art, multiphase CFD has limitations due to, for example, the lack of constitutive models that adequately describe the range of particle characteristics in a typical particle mix. This presentation will overview the work in the development of improved computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for the simulation of both dilute and dense-phase fluid-particle flows. The linkage between DEM (Discrete Element Method) models and CFD will be shown; that is, how DEM simulations can give insight into improved constitutive models needed for large-scale CFD simulations. Some current challenges in particle-flow modeling, including the effect particle shape and the influence of the interstitial fluid on the details of particle motion, will also be discussed. Bio: Jennifer Sinclair Curtis is Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Florida (UF). Prior to this, she held administrative roles as Department Chair of Chemical Engineering at UF and Associate Dean of Engineering and Department Head of Freshman Engineering at Purdue University. Professor Curtis received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University (1983) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University (1989). She has an internationally-recognized research program in the development and validation of numerical models for the prediction of particle flow phenomena. Professor Curtis is a recipient of the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Fulbright Senior Research Scholar Award, the American Society of Engineering Education's (ASEE) Chemical Engineering Lectureship Award, the Eminent Overseas Lectureship Award by the Institution of Engineers in Australia, the ASEE's Sharon Keillor Award for Women in Engineering, and the AIChE Fluidization Lectureship Award. She currently serves as Associate Editor of the AIChE Journal in charge of all manuscripts on Particle Technology and Fluidization. She is also on the Editorial Advisory Board of Powder Technology, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, and Chemical Engineering Education.

Congratulations to Dr. Rakesh Agrawal!

Dear Colleagues, I am absolutely delighted to inform that the White House has announced today that Dr. Rakesh Agrawal is one of five U.S. inventors selected as recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. This is the highest recognition the nation confers on inventors and is an extremely rare honor. The recipients will receive their awards at a White House ceremony later this year. In announcing the recipients of the National Medal of Science and National Medal of Technology and Innovation, President Obama noted that "Each of these extraordinary scientists, engineers, and inventors is guided by a passion for innovation, a fearlessness even as they explore the very frontiers of human knowledge, and a desire to make the world a better place. Their ingenuity inspires us all to reach higher and try harder, no matter how difficult the challenges we face." With his extraordinary creativity and productivity, Dr. Agrawal has had tremendous impact by enhancing many technologies that serve society and improve the lives of others. He continues his past impressive record with outstanding current research in solar energy, biofuels and energy-efficient separation methods. In recognition of this honor, we will hold a reception for Dr. Agrawal at 4 pm on Friday, September 30, in the Henson Atrium, Forney Hall.
