Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Alan Lesser University of Massachusetts "Aspects of molecular mobility and topology on the mechanical performance of polymeric glasses" October 15, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The use of polymeric materials is widespread in virtually every application within our society today. They are now commonplace engineering materials of choice in many applications including, automotive, aerospace, housing, and medical applications. This is due in large part to the multitude of synthetic routes, molecular architectures, and processing strategies that enable an infinite range of materials with unique properties. In this lecture, we discuss aspects that relate molecular architecture and segmental mobility to engineering performance. We start by highlighting how basic alterations in molecular architecture affect key thermal and mechanical properties of glassy networks. We then discuss how these characteristics relate to nonlinear properties including the yield behavior, the post yield response, and fracture behavior. We illustrate how these properties change during the formation of the glass and how they are altered by process or cure conditions. We then present results that probe segmental mobility during active nonlinear deformation in a model glass. We distinguish between flow in a polymer melt to that of vitreous flow observed in polymer glass subjected to large inelastic deformation. Bio: Dr. Alan Lesser is currently a Full Professor in the Polymer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts. His research activities include structure-property relationships in polymers and polymer based composites, nonlinear and fracture behavior of polymer based materials, and processing polymers in supercritical carbon dioxide. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Polymer Engineering and Science Journal and Polymer Composites Journal. He also resides on the Advisory Board for the Journal of Applied Polymer Science. He is a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers, has served as the Conference Chair for the Gordon Composites Conference, and has served as Chair of the Polymer Analysis Division, and Failure Analysis and Prevention SIG, for the Society of Plastics Engineers. He has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals and more than 130 in conference proceedings. Dr. Lesser received his PhD in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1988 and joined the faculty in the PSE Department in 1995 after spending 6 years in industry working as a Research Scientist for Shell Development Company.

Topics will include alternative paradigms for process synthesis, practical methods for heat exchanger network synthesis, systematic identification of designs which exploit distillation, azeotropic distillation, extractive distillation, extraction, reactive distillation, and related separation technologies, techniques for coordinating the specification of separation conditions in a way to minimize energy requirements and equipment costs, separation synthesis for mixtures with very nonideal solution thermodynamics, reaction network or supply chain network synthesis, the interaction of process synthesis with control system synthesis, and related topics. ChE 597 Chemical Process Technology and Industry Structure (ICRN 66409) Spring 2014 TR 1:30-2:50 FRNY G124 This course will survey key sectors of the chemical processing industries and discuss the structure of the industry and the historical development and evolution of the technologies which have shaped them and the common flowsheet elements which have proven to be commercially successful. Examples will be drawn from a range of industry sectors, production scales, chemistries, and enabling technologies. The industry will be examined in light of factors which have most influenced its development including raw materials of choice, energy availability, and the development of new unit operations, as well as those which will influence its future course including advances in science and technology, environmental impact minimization, water availability, new sources of energy, and sustainability, carbon management, and climate change concerns.

Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Pulickel Ajayan Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Rice University "Engineering of Nanostructures - Challenges and Opportunities" Thursday, October 31, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The talk will discuss our recent efforts in engineering nanostructured materials from building blocks that range in size, dimensionality and properties. The idea of engineering nanostructures to build functional materials captures the essence of nanotechnology and the challenges and opportunities in this area will be discussed. One dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes and the emerging two-dimensional atomic layers as novel building blocks will be considered. The creation of three-dimensional architectures from nanoscale building blocks will lead to new opportunities and the challenges involved in this approach will be highlighted. The talk will focus on engineered nanomaterials as a platform for several applications that include nanocomposites, energy storage, low dimensional devices etc. Bio: Dr. Pulickel Ajayan received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Dr. Ajayan's current position is Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor of Engineering at Rice University. He has recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award, Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. He was elected to the National Academy of Science India, Foreign Fellow in 2011 and elected Fellow of AAAS in 2007. Dr. Ajayan has nearly 20 years of record in the development of nanomaterials for various applications. He has been a pioneer in the research and development of carbon nanotubes and has contributed to this field greatly. He is an experimentalist and has also contributed to research areas of graphene, 2D layered materials, nanocomposites, electrical interconnects, nanostructured materials in energy storage and conversion and energetic materials. He has a strong record in materials characterization, microscopy and spectroscopy.

ABET visit

Dear Colleagues, As you are aware, we have our ABET visit going on currently - started yesterday and ends tomorrow. Dr. Ron Danner, a well-known thermodynamics emeritus faculty member from Penn State is our Program Evaluator - he is a distinguished teacher-scholar from a large State university like ours. He selected several faculty members to meet with individually and these visits are going on in FRNY 3059 - he reviewed the course materials and toured the facilities yesterday. I meet with Dr. Danner at 4 pm today and his last meeting is the exit meeting jointly with Dave Corti and I at 11:30 am tomorrow, when he'll give us the preliminary conclusions from his evaluation. Is there Music Behind it?" October 22, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The complexity of metabolic networks would appear to fit in more appropriately with a cacophonic scenario than anything remotely musical. However, this talk will attempt to show that a mathematical view can be had of this complex process in which the phenomenon of metabolic regulation can be likened to the conductor of a symphonic orchestra summoning combinations of instruments representing metabolic reactions towards superlative music. It will be the objective of this seminar to let this analogy lead the discussion of a cybernetic theory of cellular metabolism which interprets the diversity of gene expression as a targeted effort to maximize the organism's survival. Bio: Professor Ramkrishna received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bombay in 1960, and his Ph.D. from University of Minnesota in 1965. He is a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Foreign Fellow of The Indian National Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of The American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Fellow of The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He is a World leader in the application of mathematics to chemical engineering. His major research contributions have been in the development of novel mathematical frameworks to solve basic chemical engineering problems displaying deterministic and stochastic behaviors. His work is very multidisciplinary working with investigators from around the world. .
