Dear All, The school and GSO are hosting a guided wind farm tour of the Benton County Wind Farm (410 South Adeway, Fowler, IN 47944) on April 18th, Saturday, at 4pm. The tour may be an hour and a half long. More details of what we may be doing at the farm are in the attached document along with a map. The event is open to all faculty/staff/graduate students of our school and their family/significant-others. School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Lizbeth Rostro School of Chemical Engineering Purdue University "Synthesis, Optimization, and Characterization of Radical Polymers for Organic Electronic Applications" Thursday, April 16, 2015 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Electrically-active organic materials have attracted much attention in recent years due to their chemical tunability and relatively high performance in organic electronic devices. Here, we focus on a new class of conducting polymers, which contain a non-conjugated backbone and an electrically-active pendant stabilized radical group. These radical polymers are synthesized using a facile, scalable polymerization mechanism. For the first time, we have established that these materials are electrically-active in the solid state. Additionally, we demonstrate that the electronic properties of these materials can be tuned in order to provide specific performance in a range of applications (e.g., plastic solar cells). Bio: Lizbeth Rostro studied chemical engineering at the University of Arkansas - Fayetteville. During her time there she was afforded the opportunity to undertake three co-op rotations with The Dow Chemical Company. After graduating with a B.S. in chemical engineering from Arkansas in 2011, she began her graduate studies at Purdue University under the supervision of Professor Bryan Boudouris. In 2012 she was named as an awardee of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Upon the completion of her doctoral degree in August 2015, she will begin a full-time appointment at The Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas.

Nathan Nurse and Haiyu Fang Winners of the School of ChE Citation Awards

This is an e-mail to announce that Dr. Haiyu Fang and Nathan Nurse are the winners of the School of Chemical Engineering's 2015 Citation Awards. The 2015 School of ChE Citation Award honors outstanding achievement by a Purdue Chemical Engineering graduate student who is the lead author on an article that has been cited the most times since 2013. Nathan Nurse's article, "Clipping of Flexible Tails of Histones H3 and H4 Affects the Structure and Dynamics of the Nucleosome," in Biophysical Journal has been highly cited since it was published in March of 2013. Nathan is currently being advised by Dr. Yuan. Haiyu Fang's article, "Synthesis and Thermoelectric Properties of Compositional-Modulated Lead Telluride-Bismuth Telluride Nanowire Heterostructures," in Nano Letters has been highly cited since it was published in May of 2013. Dr. Fang was advised by Dr. Wu and graduated from the School of ChE in December 2014. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Materials Research Lab at University of California at Santa Barbara under the supervision of Dr. Rachel Segalman. He is working on polymer/nanocomposite materials. The School will honor Haiyu and Nathan at the Faculty Lectureship Award Lecture on Thursday, April 16th, at 9 a.m. There will be a reception (with bagels and coffee) in the Atrium at 8:30 a.m. beforehand. This is an e-mail to announce that Lizbeth Rostro is the winner of this year's Faculty Lectureship Award. The Faculty Lectureship Award honors outstanding achievement in scholarly research and publication by a Purdue Chemical Engineering graduate student. On Thursday, April 16th, at 9:00 a.m., Lizbeth will give a lecture titled, "Synthesis, Optimization, and Characterization of Radical Polymers for Organic Electronic Applications," in G140. Her abstract and bio are attached. Lizbeth's thesis is being directed by Dr. Boudouris, and she will be graduating with her Ph.D. in August. Harold M.D. Anderson Professor and Chair Dept. of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering University of Houston "Multi-Functional Structured Catalysts for Clean Exhaust from Lean Burn Vehicles Tuesday, April 14, 2015 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: In order to take advantage of the increased fuel efficiency of these vehicles while improving urban air quality, significant reductions in the emissions of NOx and particulate soot are needed. NOx Storage and Reduction (NSR) is a promising but complex catalytic process that involves the sequential periodic reactive trapping of NOx and its rapid reduction on multi-functional catalysts containing precious metal and storage components. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) involves reaction of NOx with NH3 on metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts. Multi-functional catalyst architectures that combine two or more active layers or zones can be effective designs to address cost and/or performance limitations. In this talk we describe several examples from our recent experimental and modeling studies of three different multi-functional structured catalysts. The first combines Fe- and Cu-exchanged zeolitic layers to expand the high NOx conversion temperature range. The second "NSR + SCR" catalyst combines periodic NOx storage and reduction with in situ NH3 generation and selective catalytic reduction of NOx. The third "Ammonia Slip Catalyst" (ASC) combines an ammonia oxidation catalyst and a metal-exchanged zeolite as a NOx reduction catalyst in a dual-layer architecture to oxidize NH3 with high selectivity to N2. We show how focused experiments complemented by modeling can not only lead to deeper insight but also to "optimal" structures and operating strategies. Bio: Dr. Michael P. Harold is the M.D. Anderson Professor and Department Chair of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Houston. With expertise in reaction engineering and catalysis, Harold is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed papers and has given over 250 presentations and invited lectures. He is the founder and principal investigator of the University of Houston's Texas Center for Clean Engines, Emissions & Fuels (TxCEF), established in 2003. Mike was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the AIChE Journal in late 2011. Mike is the 7th editor in the AIChE Journal's 57-year history. A Pittsburgh, PA native, Harold received his Bachelor's degree at Pennsylvania State University, and his PhD from the University of Houston. He joined the faculty at University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1985 where he became Associate Professor. In 1993 Harold joined DuPont Company, where he held several technical and managerial positions. In 2000 Harold returned to the University of Houston where he became the Dow Chair Professor and Department Chair, a position he held for 8 years. He was re-appointed to that position in early 2013. In 2010 Harold was named the M.D. Anderson Professor. His honors include the 2013 Ester Farfel Award at the University of Houston (highest honor bestowed on a faculty member) and the American Chemical Society's Fuel Division Richard A. Glenn Award.

School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Kyungbum Lee Dept. of Chemical and Biological Engineering Tufts University "Metabolic Network Analysis in Biotechnology and Biomedicine" Tuesday, April 7, 2015 9:00 - 10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: We are interested in the study of cellular metabolism and its role in shaping biological function. Central to our research is the idea that metabolism involves the concerted actions of many enzymes, reactants, and products that together form a complex reaction network. This presentation focuses on network models of metabolism as an analysis framework, with examples drawn from two ongoing projects. The first example describes a dynamic model of CHO cell metabolism in fed batch culture, which is used to identify potential cell and process modification targets for productivity improvement. The second example describes a graph model of a microbial community, which is used to identify bioactive bacterial metabolites present in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Bio: Kyongbum Lee is currently Professor and Chair of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department and Program Director for Bioengineering for the School of Engineering at Tufts University. He was a Visiting Faculty Member at the Obesity Research Center of Boston University School of Medicine. He joined the faculty of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at Tufts University as an Assistant Professor in the fall of 2002. Dr. Lee obtained his Ph.D. in chemical engineering with a minor in applied mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2002. He received his B.S. in chemical engineering from Stanford University in 1995. His research interests are metabolic engineering, tissue engineering, metabolomics, and systems biology. Honors include a Mellon Foundation Research Semester Fellowship, Jay Bailey Young Investigator Award for Best Paper in Metabolic Engineering, Invitation to National Academies Keck Futures Conference, and Tufts University Graduate Teaching and Mentoring Award. He has served as a guest editor for Advances in Biochemical Engineering, Current Opinion in Chemical Engineering, and Current Opinions in Biotechnology. He has held elected positions of Division Director and Area Program Chair for the Food, Pharmaceutical Bioengineering Division of the AIChE. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the journals Metabolites, Adipocytes, and Technology.
