Dear All, We are planning to have a baby shower for Karissa Raderstorf on May 2, 2014 for the arrival of her daughter, Kylie Irene, who was born March 22, 2014. She weighed 7 ½ lbs & was 19" long. We are going to have a carry-in lunch in FRNY 3059. The lunch will be from 12:00 - 1:00 PM, along with the baby shower. Please let me know what you would like to bring, so I can keep track of it. If you can't bring something you may donate money for food, then I will purchase something. Also if you would like to bring a gift or donate money for a gift card, please let me know. First, we investigate some influences of flow on biofilms. In particular, we identify the formation of biofilm streamers, which are filaments of biofilm extended along the central region of a channel flow, and show how these filaments are capable of causing catastrophic disruption and clogging of industrial, environmental and medical flow systems. We present a mathematical model to rationalize the rapid growth of the streamer. As we shall show, clogging occurs from the "inside-out" rather than form the "outside-in". Second we consider flow in a T-junction, which is perhaps the most common element in many piping systems. The flows are laminar but have high Reynolds numbers, typically Re=100-1000. It seems obvious that any particles in the fluid that enter the T-junction will leave following the one of the two main flow channels. Nevertheless, we report experiments that document that bubbles and other low density objects can be trapped at the bifurcation. The trapping leads to the steady accumulation of bubbles that can form stable chain-like aggregates in the presence, for example, of surfactants, or give rise to a growth due to coalescence. Our three-dimensional numerical simulations rationalize the mechanism behind this phenomenon. Bio: Professor Howard A. Stone received the Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Davis in 1982 and the PhD in Chemical Engineering from Caltech in 1988. Following a postdoctoral year in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge, in 1989 Howard joined the faculty of the (now) School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University, where he eventually became the Vicky Joseph Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics. In July 2009 Howard moved to Princeton University where he is Donald R. Dixon '69 and Elizabeth W. Dixon Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Stone's research interests are in fluid dynamics, especially as they arise in research and applications at the interface of engineering, chemistry, physics, and biology. He received the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), and is past Chair of the Division of Fluid Dynamics of the APS. Congratulations to Bryan Boudouris and Rakesh Agrawal!

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to inform about 2 Purdue recognitions received by our School faculty yesterday. First, Bryan Boudouris has received a 2014-15 Teaching for Tomorrow Award, where he's one of nine "junior" faculty matched with three highly accomplished and experienced faculty who will, over the next year, address important topics and experiences related to teaching and student learning. In recognition of his past accomplishments and future promise, he'll be awarded $1,500 in discretionary funds. Second, Rakesh Agrawal has been selected as one of the 2014 recipients of the Morrill Award, Purdue's highest career achievement recognition for a faculty member. He is cited as being among a select group of awardees the Morrill Award Committee judged to have excelled in all roles as a Professor at a land-grant research university. The committee saw clear synergies among his roles as teacher, scholar and engaged professor, and was also impressed with the impact of his work on society. The Morrill Award comes with a $30,000 prize which may be used as discretionary funds or salary supplements. Pl join me in congratulating Bryan and Rakesh for their terrific awards, which also bring recognition to our School! With best wishes, Arvind

Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Dr. Meenesh Singh Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California "A Journey through Crystal Forests" Thursday, April 24, 2014 9:00-10:20 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Crystalline materials can exist in variety of shapes spanning a spectrum of physicochemical properties. Forests of crystal morphologies often appear in different applications. This talk will briefly cover the identification of such forests for different crystalline materials, providing directions for targeted synthesis of desired crystal shapes and novel experiments to measure crystal morphologies and face-specific growth rates. Bio: Dr. Meenesh R. Singh, Postdoctoral Scholar in the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, obtained his B.E (Chemical Engg.) degree from Sardar Patel University in 2005, M.Tech (Chemical Engg.) degree from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 2008 and Ph.D (Chemical Engg.) from Purdue University in 2013. At JCAP, he is working on artificial photosynthesis for solar fuels under the supervision of Prof. Nathan S. Lewis (Caltech), Prof. Rachel Segalman (UC Berkeley), Dr. Adam Weber (LBL) and Prof. John S. Newman (UC Berkeley). His doctoral research was under the guidance of Prof. Doraiswami Ramkrishna, where he studied shape evolution of crystals. This work is recognized by multiple awards such as i) AIChE process development division student paper award, ii) AIChE separation division graduate student research award, iii) Outstanding graduate student research award, and iv) McDonnell Douglas Fellowship. His research interests lie in the area of healthcare and renewable energy. Currently, he is working towards the development of i) efficient photoelectrochemical devices for solar to liquid fuel production and ii) computational tools to predict polymorphs and morphologies of crystalline materials.

Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering FACULTY SEMINAR Prof. Enrique Iglesia Dept. of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering University of California, Berkeley Nanoparticles and Nanospaces: The Catalysis Toolbox Wednesday, April 16, 2014 11:30am - 12:30 pm FRNY G140 Abstract. Chemical reactions occur at the smallest of dimensions, where bonds cleave and form. The size of molecules, catalytic structures, and their containers matters at this nanometer scale. Diversity and specificity in catalysis exploit size to extend the properties of elements from those in their bulk state. Reactivity in metals and oxides changes markedly as coordination and electronic environment at exposed surfaces vary with cluster size. Low-coordination atoms on small clusters stabilize transition states for reactions limited by bond cleavage on bare surfaces. Such atoms, however, also stabilize chemisorbed reactants, making small clusters less reactive when steps require such species. On semiconductors, such as oxides and sulfides, the charge delocalization required at transition states leads to an intrinsic link between reactivity and electronic/optical properties. Confinement of catalytic structures within small voids preserves their size, protects them from impurities, and allows preferential access by certain reactants, while also selecting specific transition states, thus conferring enzyme-like specificity to chemical catalysis.
