Campus-wide tornado drill on March 20

Hello Everyone, As part of Indiana's Severe Weather Preparedness Week, Purdue University's Office of Emergency Preparedness and Planning will coordinate a campus-wide tornado drill on March 20 (this is Thursday, during spring break). If there is inclement weather, the drill will be canceled. Multiple warning systems will be activated at 10:15 a.m. The systems that will be activated include the All Hazard Outdoor Warning Sirens (intended to warn those outdoors only), text message and the Boiler TV Emergency Alerting System layers of the Purdue Alert notification system. The outdoor sirens will be activated again at 7:35 pm, without the use of the text-messaging alert. This year, the ChE Safety Committee agreed that our School will not take part actively in this voluntary exercise, like last year. However, we strongly encourage all faculty and instructors to discuss in class the shelter-in-place procedures, when classes resume after the spring break. Please review the standard safety procedure for a severe weather emergency situation for Forney building: - when the 'all hazards' sirens are activated (or you receive the Purdue ALERT text message), stay in the building and move to the shelter-in-place location, which is the basement of both wings of the building. Queue for Building Related Issues

Dear Colleagues, We are implementing a queue system for keeping track of building related items. From now on, please send all your issues related to the building to frnybldg(a)purdue.edu<mailto:frnybldg@purdue.edu>. This email is for all the items you would normally send to me or Jeff such as building maintenance, furniture moves, work orders, cleaning and temperature change requests. We plan to operate the building maintenance queue in a similar way as the computer queue, so please follow all verbal requests with an email to frnybldg(a)purdue.edu<mailto:frnybldg@purdue.edu>. This is a phased release; the staff started to use this email system at the beginning of February, now the graduate students and faculty are asked to start using this system. Jeff and I will both monitor this queue and we'll be able to track the requests we receive and how to address them best. If you have any questions, please let me know. Mayank Shekhar and Haoran Yang 2014 Citation Award Winners

This is an e-mail to announce that Haoran Yang and Dr. Mayank Shekhar are both winners of the School of Chemical Engineering's 2014 Citation Award. The 2014 Citation Award honors outstanding achievement by a Purdue Chemical Engineering graduate student who is the lead author on an article that has been cited the most times since 2012. Haoran Yang's article, "Nontoxic and Abundant Copper Zinc Tin Sulfide Nanocrystals for Potential High-Temperature Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting," has been cited 20 times in the 23 months since it was published in February of 2012. Mr. Yang is advised by Dr. Wu. Dr. Shekhar's article, "Size and Support Effects for the Water-Gas Shift Catalysis over Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Model AI2O3 and TiO3," has been cited 34 times in the 23 months since it was published in March of 2012. Dr. Shekhar graduated from our School in 2012, and he was co-advised by Dr. Ribeiro and Dr. Delgass. The School will honor Mr. Yang and Dr. Shekhar at the Faculty Lectureship Award Lecture on Thursday, April 24th, at 9 a.m. There will be a reception (with bagels and coffee) beforehand in the Atrium at 8:30 a.m. All are invited to attend. This is an e-mail to announce that Dr. Meenesh Singh is the winner of this year's Faculty Lectureship Award. The Faculty Lectureship Award honors outstanding achievement in scholarly research and publication by a Purdue Chemical Engineering graduate student. Dr. Singh graduated from our School in August of 2013, and his advisor was Dr. Ramkrishna. Dr. Singh is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he works on artificial photosynthesis for solar fuels. Dr. Singh will give a lecture titled, "A Journey through Crystal Forests," and his abstract and bio are attached. ChE Safety Committee Wins Purdue Presidential Safety Award

Dear Colleagues, It is my pleasure to announce that the Chemical Engineering Safety Committee has been selected to receive the 2014 Purdue Presidential Safety Award in recognition of the School's safety efforts. Current team members include: Chairperson Gabriela Nagy; Professors Robert Hannemann and Fabio Ribeiro; Graduate Students Gregory Honda, Rohit Jaini and Erik Sheets; and staff members Jason Davenport, Jeff Valley and Yury Zvinevich. The team was nominated based on their hard work and persistence in implementing and enforcing safety protocols, procedures and rules within the School, as well as for their efforts to offer safety education and advice since the committee was established in 1979. Due in large part to the committee's efforts, the School of Chemical Engineering became the first Safety Indemnified school or department at Purdue. That indemnification continues to this day. The ChE safety committee meets monthly and conducts yearly safety inspection of all offices and laboratories. It also provides continuous support, safety training and safety advice to the School community. The 2014 Purdue Presidential Safety Award was presented at the Radiological and Environmental Management's Annual Safety Chair meeting on March 5, 2014Attached is a picture from the event. . This is the second year when Purdue gives the Presidential Safety Award. Please join me in congratulating all ChE Safety Committee members for this accomplishment.
