Slowness on Atom

Hi, In the last couple of weeks there have been times where your ECN deployed computers may have seemed 'slow' - this has been very noticeable to me specifically on the last two Monday mornings but it has also happened at a few other times. One of the major causes for this 'slowness' appears to be a large number of people accessing their email that is stored on Atom at the same time. If you have large mail folders or try to move large amounts of email at one time (sorting to folders, deleting lots of old or junk mail) this can cause a heavy load on atom and the result will be seen as slow response times across the department. Please keep this in mind when you are trying to organize your email, especially on Monday mornings after a weekend if you haven't been checking it. If you have an exchange account and don't save any mail on atom (many do in archives though) then there isn't anything you can do except to be patient. The long term solution is a newer server with increased CPU capacity and that is in the works, but the short term solution is better email management and the awareness that when your move or delete large groups of messages, or when your 'inbox' is extremely large, your actions while using your mail program can cause a high amount of load on Atom. FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15 A.M. in Henson Atrium Abstract: It is well known that individual vesicles or liposomes (i.e. fluid enclosed by a lipid bilayer membrane suspended in a second fluid) are characterized by a remarkable dynamics in flow. For vesicles that are "near spheres" this dynamics includes at least 5 different types of orbits in shear flow that are functions of the viscosity ratio between the inner and outer fluid as well as the Capillary number based on the bending modulus. However, this dynamics becomes even more rich as the reduced volume falls below about 0.65 where now there are at least three equilibrium shapes (prolates, discocytes, and stomatocytes) which are linearly stable. It is therefore not surprising that a suspension of vesicles is characterized by fascinating collective behavior as well. I will discuss our recent development of a numerical code (based on Loop subdivision) which allows the Stokes flow simulation of non-dilute suspensions of vesicles and capsules at essentially any value of the reduced volume. We will then use these numerical simulations to examine a very important naturally occurring consequence of the interactions in these suspensions -- hemostasis in the small vessels. Hemostasis relies on naturally occurring blood particles such as platelets being concentrated near the vessel walls. The adhesion of platelets to an injured vessel site is a critical initial stage for the formation of a platelet plug to stop bleeding. Any reduction of hematocrit and/or flow rate can both slow down the margination of platelets toward the vessel wall and in turn hamper the formation of the platelet plug. The resulting coagulopathy can be life-threatening, so understanding this process, which we shall demonstrated is an inherently fluctuation-induced hydrodynamic process, is critical to developing therapies for the mitigation of these coagulopathies. Bio: [cid:image002.png@01CCE257.72016D30] Eric Shaqfeh is the Lester Levi Carter Professor and Department Chair of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. He joined Stanford's faculty in 1990 after earning a B.S.E. summa cum laude from Princeton University (1981), and a M.S. (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) from Stanford University. In 2001 he received a dual appointment and became Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He is most recently (as of 2004) a faculty member in the Institute of Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford. Shaqfeh's current research interests include non-Newtonian fluid mechanics (especially in the area of elastic instabilities, and turbulent drag reduction), nonequilibrium polymer statistical dynamics (focusing on single molecules studies of DNA), and suspension mechanics (particularly of fiber suspensions and particles/vesicles in microfluidics). He has authored or co-authored over 170 publications and has been an Associate Editor of the Physics of Fluids since 2006. Shaqfeh has received the APS Francois N. Frenkiel Award 1989, the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award 1990, the David and Lucile Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering 1991, the Camile and Henry Dreyfus Teacher--Scholar Award 1994, the W.M. Keck Foundation Engineering Teaching Excellence Award 1994, the 1998 ASEE Curtis W. McGraw Award, and the 2011 Bingham Medal from the Society of Rheology. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, he has held a number of professional lectureships, most recently the Merck Distinguished Lectureship, Rutgers (2003), the Corrsin Lectureship, Johns Hopkins (2003) and the Katz Lectureship, CCNY (2004). He was also the Hougen Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin (2004) and the Probstein Lecturer at MIT (2011). Eric has been married to Terhilda Garrido for 28 years, and they have two children, Stefan, 22 and Elena, 18.

Matching pear trees had to be removed from the front of ME in 2009 for a foundation waterproofing project. We took that opportunity to replant with evergreen and crabapple trees which will not block the windows as the pears did. We will install the same planting at FRNY this summer in order to restore the symmetry of Purdue Mall. Our arborists manage over 8,000 trees on the West Lafayette campus. We require construction projects to protect existing trees wherever possible and to financially compensate us for those which must be removed. We use those funds to replant hundreds of new trees across campus each year. Because of these and other efforts the National Arbor Day Foundation has awarded Purdue its Tree Campus USA designation. Congratulations to Drs Korsmeyer and Mikos, ChE Alumni elected to NAE today

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to inform that two School alumni were elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) today. Dr. Richard W. Korsmeyer (MS 1980, PhD 1983) is currently Global Head of Licensing, Worldwide Pharmaceutical Sciences and Senior Research Fellow with Pfizer. He has been a major figure in the development and commercialization of drug delivery systems. Specifically, he is the co-inventor of a method that permits delivery of a full course of the antibiotic azithromycin therapy with a single oral dose, which was developed into the commercial product, Zmax(tm). He has authored 65 publications and 25 patents. He is a member of the Connecticut Nanotech Coordinating Group, member of several journal editorial boards and a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). His citation reads: "For contributions to drug delivery formulations and medical devices." Dr. Antonios G. Mikos (MS 1985, PhD 1988) is the Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University. In addition, he is Director of the Center for Excellence in Tissue Engineering at Rice University. Dr. Mikos' research focuses on the synthesis, processing, and evaluation of new biomaterials for use as scaffolds for tissue engineering, as carriers for controlled drug delivery, and as non-viral vectors for gene therapy. His work has led to the development of novel orthopaedic, dental, cardiovascular, neurologic, and ophthalmologic biomaterials. An author of over 420 publications and 25 patents, he has been cited more than 28,000 times. Dr. Mikos is the editor-in-chief of Tissue Engineering, the premier journal of the field, and serves on several other journal editorial boards. He is currently President of the North American Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society and has co-authored the premier textbook on biomaterials. His previous recognitions include the Founders Award of the Society for Biomaterials, AIChE's Alpha Chi Sigma Award and the Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Award, and ASEE's Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award and the Chemstations ChE Lectureship Award. He received our School's Outstanding Chemical Engineer Award in 2008. His citation reads: "For advances in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, biomaterials, and drug delivery, including development of biodegradable polymers." Both Drs Korsmeyer and Mikos completed their PhD research under the direction of Professor Nicholas A. Peppas, a distinguished member of our School's faculty during 1976-2002.
