September LORRE Safety Communication September 16, 2013 To all, The safety retraining for fall 2013 will be held on Thursday, September 19^th in the Fu room in the Potter building (POTR 234) at 3:00 PM. We would like you to become familiar with the new change in the Global System Safety and Hazard Communication System (HCS). We will discuss the changes which have been made to the chemical labels, safety data sheets (SDS), and chemical classification system. Also, we will review good lab practice with some informative videos.Lastly, we will discuss the ISP Safety Recertification. This safety retraining is a very important part of our safety program. All LORRE faculty, staff, visiting scholars, students, and anyone working in the LORRE labs are required to attend. We believe that the safety retraining is useful and will help improve the safety in our labs. Thank you for your support of the LORRE safety program, Lorre Safety Committee
/Safety Issue/ /October 2013/ /To all:/ REM recently (9/23--9/26)performed a Potter building safety inspection. Overall, we received a lot of positive feedback. But, we also received some important comments. After the safety committee discussed these observations, we have made a list of the following changes and we hope this will help us better our safety in the labs. 1._The door to lab #335_should always be closed, and if you are not working inside of the room, the door should be locked as well since this is a biological hazard room. 2.We have _updated the chemical abbreviations sheet_ and it is attached to this email. We think it is a good idea to have the same list in each lab since we are all working with the same research project and we share chemicals. This list includes chemicals for all the labs and is posted in each lab. In the future, if anyone makes a new chemical abbreviation, please let the Safety Committee know so that we can update the sheet. 3.Please keep _the door to autoclave room #237_ closed because otherwise the autoclave smell gets into the hallway. 4.We are working on improving our _chemical storage safety_. It is most concern. More details will be provided in the next Safety Issue. Thanks LORRE safety committee //
*_LORRE October Safety Issue: UPDATE_* *_10/28/13_* *_ _* To All: 1.Biological Safety: ·Lab #335 should only be used for Biochips pathogen experiments. We will be posting the list of people authorized to work in this lab on the door (see below). This room is very small, so if any other students, staff, or visiting scholars want to work in 335, please get permission from the Director, Professor Ladisch or Dr. Ximenes (in charge of Biochips). ·All bottles, flasks, beakers, and computer equipment in lab 335 should not be removed. Any items coming into contact with hazardous materials in 335 should be autoclaved immediately. ·Be sure to wear a lab coat, glasses, and gloves when working in lab 335. Wear a surgical mask if necessary. 2.Food Safety: ·We have moved the food microwave out of lab #252/233. Now, only lab #336 has a food storage refrigerator and microwave. Please refrain from eating in the lab, the best location to eat would be the first floor of Potter. 3.Potter HVAC Project: ·The Potter center Variable Air Volume Box Replacement has started. The LORRE labs that will be affected are: #236, 237, 237A, 235, 235A, 233, 231, 256, 254, 252. The earliest work will start in January 2014. Today Professor Abby and community members met with Ellis Mechanical, Phil Qualio, and some company representatives to review and plan. Some computers, desks, and furniture may need to be covered. In addition, we may need to move some refrigerators and chemicals and glassware will need to be put away. More details will come later.

To all:
Regarding the safe storage of chemicals, as mentioned by REM, we have made some arrangements and checked the LORRE storage. Here are some pointers so that everyone can help us improve:
1.Flammable liquids should be stored in a flame-proof cabinet. (See attached LORRE cabinet list)
2.Avoid leaving flammable chemicals on the floor or lab bench, even temporarily, and always return these chemicals after use.
3.Regularly check to make sure no chemical containers are leaking or deteriorating- Broken containers should be placed in double-contained packaging as soon as possible.
4.Store acids in a separate acid cabinet but isolate Nitric Acid from the others.
5.Separate all incompatible chemicals

*Biological Safety:*
1.Biological safety should be a priority of every LORRE member. Recommended PPE includes: lab coat, goggles, gloves, mask, and good personal hygiene and frequent hand washing are also important.
2.Doing experiments with Biohazards, they need to be performed in the Biological Safety Cabinet (fume hood) in lab #335.
3.In each lab, there is a box for safety goggles. Many of these boxes are starting to be empty, so please remember to return goggles to the box when you are finished with them, and try not to leave them in other buildings!
We appreciate that Barron Hewetson has fixed the Vise mechanical screw apparatus used for holding and clamping a work piece. He took the initiative in solving this problem. So in future pretreatment material experiments will perform more safety and more convenience.
Thanks for your cooperation!

To all:
Welcome back to second semester! With the start of this new semester, we want to make sure the safety program is still a priority.
1.Centrifuge Use
Michael Garrard from Beckman Coulter changed the parts and fixed the centrifuge (Avanti, J20XPI) in lab #252 over winter break. Now, the centrifuge looks new. He mentioned that this conk out was caused by plastic shards in the chamber and found that the shaft that spins the rotor had a wobble. The instrument was not leveled and the weight was leaning towards one side of the machine. For prevention and safe use of the centrifuge, please follow these precautions:
-If you want to use the centrifuge, you must sign out a key from Carla in the main office
-Anyone using the centrifuge needs necessary training
-Please use the provided log record (like for the autoclave) when using the centrifuge
2.Replacement of Ventilation System
Because of the Potter ventilation replacement, our labs are more crowded than usual since people have had to move around. We want to make sure we are still staying safe in the lab so when you finish an experiment, please take 5-10 minutes to clean your work area and return all chemicals, glassware, and tools. Please also properly treat and dispose of all waste material the next person's convenience.
We will also need to prepare for the next step in the ventilation replacement. From February -- April, replacement will take place in labs #231, 233/252, 235, 237, 254, 256. This is a very large part of our labs, so we have to prepare early. School every day is important for our research so we still want to make progress, but follow all safety procedures when setting up experiments. There are many things with which we will need your cooperation, but we will detail the organization info in the next Safety Issue.
3.Other
If someone finds Dr. Eduardo's lab coat, please give it to him- his name is on the tag, and the coat is missing.
Thanks,
The LORRE Safety Committee
*LORRE January Safety Issue #2* 1/29/2014 ** To All: As you know, the ventilation replacement program has started on the second floor of Potter. They will be moving to the middle labs soon, and so we need help preparing for this as soon as possible. _Detailed Tasks_: 1.Refrigerator and Freezer Cleaning: a.All chemicals, enzymes, samples, solutions, etc. need to be safely transferred out of the lab #254 fridge and the lab #256 freezer. If you have something important in there, please let us know. b.There are some expired chemicals or waste material in the fridge, we need to fill out a form for REM pickup. c.Once the fridges and freezers are clear, we need to attach a clean label to them so it shows they are okay to be moved 2.Glassware Safety: In labs # 231, 233/252, 235, 254, 256, 237, all beakers, flasks, tubes, bottles, etc. have to be placed inside cabinets or safely moved out of the lab. Don't leave anything on the shelves, lab benches, or on top of cabinets. We want to do this to avoid unnecessarily damaging any glassware. 3.Some equipment will need to be moved out of these labs (Water bath, incubator, Klett Colorimeter) for ongoing experiments. 4.Once lab #236 is finished with the replacement, we need to clean the Lab. and help Dr. Cunha set up her experiments again. Because we are in a time-crunch, we need your help in clearing the labs and preparing for the ventilation replacement. If you have any questions, please ask Drs. Engelberth or Mosier. Thanks for your help, The LORRE Safety Committee

1.Equipment Safety
a.We have assisted Purdue in finishing the annual LORRE property accounting for the capital equipment inventory
b.Lab #359 is installing a GFCI receptacle in the E-Pure system and refrigerator. A GFCI receptacle is different from conventional receptacles because in the event of a ground fault, a GFCI will trip and quickly stop the flow of electricity to prevent serious injury. Note: Turn the power on at the service panel, press the reset button if needed.
c.In Lab #333, Michael Powell helped us to fix the hood lights. This will help with safety when performing experiments.
2.Ventilation Replacement
We appreciate everyone's help so far. This time, the second floor middle labs did very well with preparing for the replacement. We did not damage any glassware and safely moved the refrigerators and equipment. We also set up equipment in temporary location very quickly, so the construction did not affect any experiments. Special thanks to Dr. Fernanda Marisa Cunha, Dr. Guangli Cao, Jaycey Hardenstein , Alisha Tungare, Raymond red Corn, Hongwei Zhao, Barron Hewetson, Rick Hendrickson, Carla carie, Xuan Li , Thomas Kreke and Seockmo Ku. Also, thank you to Purdue project management manager Margaret Danao and the Potter Building Deputy Phil Qualio for their help in preparing for the replacement.
3.Safety Needs
Though the construction didn't affect our experiments, it has still been crowdedthe past few weeks as we have also had students from the Corn and Soybean Competition working in the labs. Please continue to follow these rules to promote a safe environment:
i.Don't store any chemicals in the fume hoods when you done experiment.
ii.Waste material should be taken care of immediately: either autoclaved or fill out a REM form for pickup
iii. When finished with your experiment, wash all materials immediately and please don't leave any glassware in the sinks.
Thank you,
The LORRE Safety Committee

To All:
1.We have been separating the HPLC analyzer vials, caps, and filters from the large package into smaller packages so that each person can take what they need. These vials are important for HPLC analysis samples, but they can get expensive. To reduce waste and cost, please avoid leaving the vials and filters anywhere in the lab so we can keep track of inventory and order new ones accordingly.
2.HPLC Systems #1 and #7 received new H columns on March 4^th . If you are using these systems, you will need to calibrate with the new standard. When we change a column, we need to think seriously about the use-time of the column, including how many samples it has analyzed and the resolution condition. Some columns may be back-flushed and reused to increase the column lifetime.
3.Please don't shut down any of the HPLC systems or turn off the power, to help keep the HPLC systems in good working condition. If you have any problems with the systems please contact us.
Thanks,

*_LORRE May Safety Issue_*
(05/20/2014)
Dear all:
Last Thursday (5/15/2014) a representative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was on campus conducting a hazardous waste inspection. The main mission was to check that *all chemical containers are closed and properly labeled, including HPLC waste containers.*
As requested by EPA we performed a self --audit. During the self-audit, we found a few violation in the Lab. Please, see the pictures. Below identifying show "no labeled" or "not properly labeled" and "not properly cover".
Suggestion:
1)Containers must be kept closed at all times except when using.
2)Labeled necessary for any container storage liquid.
3)Use tape for Labeling, if directing by writing on the glass bottler or flask, it easily confuses people because it is repetitive
Allfaculty, staff, and students promote individual accountability for safety and regulatory compliance at Purdue . Purdue could be charged withlarge fines if we failed to comply with properly labeling and storing policy. Performing self-audits under our lab is a must. Please mention each other. Keep our Lab label safe and in compliance with EPA regulations.
Thank you for cooperation.

*July LORRE safety update*
(07/07/2014)
To All: Thank you all for your help. We have completed the self-audits for all labs, offices, common areas, and storage spaces within LORRE. We will continue to address any deficiencies found via the self-audits, but we still have much to do. Since the Potter ventilation replacement, re-organization of the second and third floors labs have been underway.Everyone has made a great effort! But busy as we are, safety is still a priority. On Monday, July 14^th , REM will renew our ISP certification, and the safety inspection it entails is strict and serious. In light of this, please: 1)Keep your experiment areas clean. 2)Don't leave dry things in the sink. 3)Make sure all chemical containers are closed and properly labeled. 4)Don't leave any chemicals in the hood after you finish your experiments inside it. Also,on Thursday, July 10^th we will have an annual HEPA Filtered Equipment Certification inspection. The Lab 335 & 237A hoods must be empty during that time; please cease experiments in those hoods prior to the certification date. (Seockmo Ku, Daehwan kim and Hongwei Zhao please take note of this) Thank you for you cooperation, LORRE safety committee
