November LORRE Safety Issue

11/11/2013

To all:

Regarding the safe storage of chemicals, as mentioned by REM, we have made some arrangements and checked the LORRE storage. Here are some pointers so that everyone can help us improve:

1.     Flammable liquids should be stored in a flame-proof cabinet. (See attached LORRE cabinet list)

2.     Avoid leaving flammable chemicals on the floor or lab bench, even temporarily, and always return these chemicals after use.

3.     Regularly check to make sure no chemical containers are leaking or deteriorating- Broken containers should be placed in double-contained packaging as soon as possible.

4.     Store acids in a separate acid cabinet but isolate Nitric Acid from the others.

5.     Separate all incompatible chemicals

Biological Safety:

1.     Biological safety should be a priority of every LORRE member. Recommended PPE includes: lab coat, goggles, gloves, mask, and good personal hygiene and frequent hand washing are also important.

2.     Doing experiments with Biohazards, they need to be performed in the Biological Safety Cabinet (fume hood) in lab #335.

3.     In each lab, there is a box for safety goggles. Many of these boxes are starting to be empty, so please remember to return goggles to the box when you are finished with them, and try not to leave them in other buildings!

We appreciate that Barron Hewetson has fixed the Vise mechanical screw apparatus used for holding and clamping a work piece. He took the initiative in solving this problem. So in future pretreatment material experiments will perform more safety and more convenience.

Thanks for your cooperation!
