Safety Issue

October 2013

To all:

REM recently (9/23–9/26) performed a Potter building safety inspection. Overall, we received a lot of positive feedback. But, we also received some important comments. After the safety committee discussed these observations, we have made a list of the following changes and we hope this will help us better our safety in the labs.

1.    The door to lab #335 should always be closed, and if you are not working inside of the room, the door should be locked as well since this is a biological hazard room.

2.    We have updated the chemical abbreviations sheet and it is attached to this email. We think it is a good idea to have the same list in each lab since we are all working with the same research project and we share chemicals. This list includes chemicals for all the labs and is posted in each lab. In the future, if anyone makes a new chemical abbreviation, please let the Safety Committee know so that we can update the sheet.

3.    Please keep the door to autoclave room #237 closed because otherwise the autoclave smell gets into the hallway.

4.    We are working on improving our chemical storage safety. It is

most concern. More details will be provided in the next Safety Issue.

Thanks
LORRE
