*January LORRE Safety Issue*
*1/16/2014*
To all:
Welcome back to second semester! With the start of this new semester, we want to make sure the safety program is still a priority.
1.Centrifuge Use
Michael Garrard from Beckman Coulter changed the parts and fixed the centrifuge (Avanti, J20XPI) in lab #252 over winter break. Now, the centrifuge looks new. He mentioned that this conk out was caused by plastic shards in the chamber and found that the shaft that spins the rotor had a wobble. The instrument was not leveled and the weight was leaning towards one side of the machine. For prevention and safe use of the centrifuge, please follow these precautions:
-If you want to use the centrifuge, you must sign out a key from Carla in the main office
-Anyone using the centrifuge needs necessary training
-Please use the provided log record (like for the autoclave) when using the centrifuge
2.Replacement of Ventilation System
Because of the Potter ventilation replacement, our labs are more crowded than usual since people have had to move around. We want to make sure we are still staying safe in the lab so when you finish an experiment, please take 5-10 minutes to clean your work area and return all chemicals, glassware, and tools. Please also properly treat and dispose of all waste material the next person's convenience.
We will also need to prepare for the next step in the ventilation replacement. From February -- April, replacement will take place in labs #231, 233/252, 235, 237, 254, 256. This is a very large part of our labs, so we have to prepare early. School every day is important for our research so we still want to make progress, but follow all safety procedures when setting up experiments. There are many things with which we will need your cooperation, but we will detail the organization info in the next Safety Issue.
3.Other
If someone finds Dr. Eduardo's lab coat, please give it to him- his name is on the tag, and the coat is missing.
Thanks,
The LORRE Safety Committee
