February LORRE Safety Issue

02/19/2014

1.      Equipment Safety

a.       We have assisted Purdue in finishing the annual LORRE property accounting for the capital equipment inventory

b.      Lab #359 is installing a GFCI receptacle in the E-Pure system and refrigerator. A GFCI receptacle is different from conventional receptacles because in the event of a ground fault, a GFCI will trip and quickly stop the flow of electricity to prevent serious injury. Note: Turn the power on at the service panel, press the reset button if needed.

c.       In Lab #333, Michael Powell helped us to fix the hood lights. This will help with safety when performing experiments.

2.      Ventilation Replacement

We appreciate everyone’s help so far. This time, the second floor middle labs did very well with preparing for the replacement. We did not damage any glassware and safely moved the refrigerators and equipment. We also set up equipment in temporary location very quickly, so the construction did not affect any experiments. Special thanks to Dr. Fernanda Marisa Cunha, Dr. Guangli Cao, Jaycey Hardenstein , Alisha Tungare, Raymond red Corn, Hongwei Zhao, Barron Hewetson, Rick Hendrickson, Carla carie, Xuan Li , Thomas Kreke and Seockmo Ku. Also, thank you to Purdue project management manager Margaret Danao  and the Potter Building Deputy Phil Qualio for their help in preparing for the replacement.

3.      Safety Needs

Though the construction didn’t affect our experiments, it has still been crowded the past few weeks as we have also had students from the Corn and Soybean Competition working in the labs. Please continue to follow these rules to promote a safe environment:

                                                              i.      Don’t store any chemicals in the  fume hoods when you done experiment.

ii.      Waste material should be taken care of immediately: either autoclaved or fill out a REM form for pickup

iii.      When finished with your experiment, wash all materials immediately and please don’t leave any glassware in the sinks.

Thank you,

The LORRE Safety Committee
