We announced the "mayors" for the office areas last week: Office Mayors 236 Barron Hewetson and Iman Beheshti 336 Mahdieh Aghazadeh and German Schafer Also, please be helpful and respond when asked by the mayors to help keep the office areas presentable. Several companies have inquired about visiting LORRE in the near future. These companies are looking to hire students with the experiences and skills that students develop while at LORRE. Please help make the first impression our guest have be the best possible by keeping your work areas orderly and clean.

Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Ruben Carbonell Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor North Carolina State University "Challenges and Recent Advances in the Purification of Biotherapeutics" September 23, 2014 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15-10:45 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: An exciting and fast growing area in medicine involves the use of proteins such as antibodies derived from genetically modified organisms to treat serious chronic diseases. Unfortunately, the high cost of development and production of these biological drugs makes them inaccessible to many individuals, especially in developing countries. There is a growing demand for faster, more efficient and safe approaches for the production of complex biotherapeutics. This seminar will describe some novel purification approaches for biologics that utilize selective small peptide ligands that recognize and bind to protein products and high throughput, high capacity membranes for product capture and purification. Bio: Ruben G. Carbonell is the Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State University, which he joined in 1984 after 10 years in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of California, Davis. He is the Director of both the Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) and the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science at NC State. Prof. Carbonell has authored over 230 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and he has trained 77 MS and PhD students and 36 postdoctoral students during his academic career. Dr. Carbonell is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. He completed his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1969 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University in 1973.

Welcome (back)! Today starts another semester and a restart to the weekly LORRE updates. Look for these emails for announcements for upcoming events, activities, and information. LORRE Seminars We will be starting our weekly LORRE seminar series in the near future. Please let your advisor know your class schedule so that we set a seminar time that everyone can attend. At LORRE, How Do I ...? This is a weekly series in the newsletter to help everyone access the resources they need to be successful. Each week will highlight a different "How do I" question. If you have suggestions for "How do I" questions, please send them to Nate Mosier (mosiern(a)purdue.edu<mailto:mosiern@purdue.edu>). At LORRE, how do I get into lab #? Everyone should have a key to their office (POTR 236 or 336). During the day (8am to 5pm) the doors to many labs will be unlocked as people work in them. However, if you find a door locked there is a key ring in each office (236 and 336) that has keys for all of the LORRE labs. You can check out the keys to unlock a door, if necessary, but please return the key ring right away so others can use it! It is also everyone's responsibly to make sure that you lock the door to the lab after you are finished. This will prevent thefts and people who lack the proper training from accessing the labs.
