We announced the "mayors" for the office areas last week: Office Mayors 236 Barron Hewetson and Iman Beheshti 336 Mahdieh Aghazadeh and German Schafer Also, please be helpful and respond when asked by the mayors to help keep the office areas presentable. Several companies have inquired about visiting LORRE in the near future. These companies are looking to hire students with the experiences and skills that students develop while at LORRE. Please help make the first impression our guest have be the best possible by keeping your work areas orderly and clean.
*September LORRE Safety Issue* 9/15/2014 /1.**//*Lab Coats*/ First, thanks to Joan Goetz for helping to wash our lab coats. There is a clean box of lab coats in room #333; If you need a coat please pick one up here. There is a box for dirty lab coats in #359. Remember that it is mandatory that you wear PPE when performing experiments, including a lab coat. If yours becomes too dirty, please place it in the box in 359 and we will periodically wash these coats (Except Lab #335 Lab coat). /2.**//*Pipettes*/ We recently distributed pipettes in each lab. To ensure that they are convenient for everyone to use, please make sure you return them to where you found them after you are done. Also, if you are traveling to another building to do some work and bring any equipment with you, make sure to return these to LORRE when your project is finished. In addition, if you notice problems with any pipette, please send it to room #333 before October, so that we can get them fixed within our one-year warranty. /3.**//*Building Safety Inspection */ /**/*On September 22,* REM will be inspecting all of Potter, including the LORRE Labs. We need to do a self-inspection first, so please follow the Purdue Self-Audit Checklist so that we can make sure we are complying with all regulations before the inspection. If you find any safety issues in your area, please contact Barron Hewetson, Iman Beheshti or Tommy from the second floor; and Mahdieh Aghazadeh, German Schafer, Raymond Red Corn, Ximing Zhang and Linda for the third floor. ·All liquid containers must be covered and labeled ·Don't store chemicals in the hood. When you finish an experiment, return all chemicals to proper storage areas ·Keep your work area safe and clean Thanks for your cooperation, The LORRE Safety Committee /**/

_Special Note (Hood Testing):_
The Laminar Flow hood in Room 237A has been emptied and cleaned. In preparation for pre-filter replacement and testing (on 10/14/14), please do not use the hood. The other hood may be used, but please wait until the testing has been finished on the Laminar Flow hood.
_Review the REM comments in the building inspection sheet:_
Thanks to the recommendations of REM, we have been able to correct all of the items mentioned in their report. It is important to read the notes they made so that we may improve our safety program in the future.
1."Emergency telephone numbers (24 hours) must be posted on outside of lab door(s). (Update to indicate accurate location(s) of chemical abbreviation and chemical formula key)."
a.We have set up the Chemical Hygiene Plan and MSDS safety sheets in the locations specified on the emergency sheets posted outside the lab doors. Please keep them in their same locations and do not throw them away.
2."Minimum clear space of 36" not maintained in front of switchboard, disconnects, or breaker panels."
3.Unsecured or inadequately secured compressed gas cylinder(s). (Cylinder on cylinder cart with regulator attached: transport with safety cap, store secured to stable stationary object).
4.Containers inadequately labeled. An alphabetized legend/key must be prominently posted or readily available if chemical abbreviations and/or formulas are used. See (Remote locations are unacceptable)
We have updated and posted the instructions for the safe use of lab equipment, including the autoclave, pure DI water system, and the centrifuge. If you experience any trouble, please contact a safety community member and we will try to help.
Thank you for your attention, LORRE Safety Committee
To All: Dr. Michelin,Michele plans to use the VORTEMP 56 for experiment in the Lab.#233. Currently there are three samples in the machine. If these samples belong to you would you please discuss with Dr,Michelin. Because she wants to set up the higher RPM. Thank you, Linda and Dr. Michelin

*November LORRE Safety Issue* *11/17/2014* _Review_: The link to the LORRE safety website is http://www.purdue.edu/lorre/safety/index.php. The website contains information on workplace injury information, safety resources, and Purdue's emergency preparedness procedures. We recommend that you take the time to familiarize yourself with the Potter Building's Emergency plan, including what to do in case of fire, tornado, or other emergency status evacuation procedures/emergency warning notifications. _Suggestions:_ The Purdue University Lab Safety Fundamental (LSF) online training has been developed. It is an excellent basic laboratory safety education tool. You can use your Purdue ID to register for LSF online training. _Notifications:_ Christian Vetter and Lauren Glass did a great job cleaning the some disorganized and dirty sinks in the lab. Please maintain the improved condition of the sinks. If you wish to soak tubes, beakers, flasks, etc. please clean and put away as soon as possible after soaking. And also thanks Joan Goetz helping wash the Lab Dirty lab coats. Thanks LORRE Safety Committee __
*December LORRE Safety Issue* December 8, 2014 To All *_PPE:_* As mentioned in the last Lab. group meeting (Lorre Seminars), we would like to emphasize the necessity of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). It is required to be worn in lab at all times. This includes: ·Safety glasses ·Lab Coat ·Gloves ·Long pants ·Closed toed shoes These things are very important and help prevent injuries and accidents in the lab. *_Hazardous Waste:_* Even though we are close to the end of the semester, we still cannot ignore the safety program. This includes proper waste material disposal. Hazardous wastes must be taken care of responsibly. Fill out a hazardous waste disposal tag (Fig 1, including the percentages of the contents inside. Then a hazardous material pick up request form must also be filled out. Fig 1 Hazardous Waste Disposal Tag *_Close Laboratory Doors_* According to the Physical Facilities Memorandum from the COE meeting on November 14, 2014, it is necessary to close laboratory doors to contain hazards, to minimize the migration of contaminants and odors, and to optimize laboratory and building indoor air quality Your cooperation in closing laboratory doors, specifically rooms #335 and #237, helps to insure a safe and functional workspace and improves the indoor air quality of the building. Thanks, LORRE Safety Committee
*LORRE Safety Issue January 2015* 01/26/2015 To All: Welcome back for the spring semester! As before, please continue to read this monthly Safety Issue. This year, our safety program will emphasize: 1) Safety retraining for all lab members 2) A goal of zero injuries. We also want to make sure everyone is familiar with the hazardous and biological waste regulation and disposal policies. As a reminder, 1, 2- Dichloroethane can NOT be mixed into the mineral acid waste containers. Our lab uses both, so it is important to make sure all waste containers have labeling that accurately reflects their contents. Also, solidified agarose gel wastes need to be collected in an appropriate bio hazard waste autoclave bag and autoclaved before disposal. We are in the process of drafting a Lab Safety Standard Operating Procedure, we will send it in next month's issue after it is completed. Thanks, The LORRE Safety Committee
