*LORRE April Safety Issue* 04/08/2013 REM has recently performed all lab hood testing and maintenance, and the Potter Building Deputy Phil Qualio is helping us with the sash cables order. The hood repairs will be completed by zones. Keep all work and equipment 6" behind sash 5. If sash does not move smoothly, request maintenance immediately 6. Lower sash to 1" or as low as practical when hood is not in use 7. Wear eye protection, a lab coat, closed-toe shoes and disposable gloves to protect yourself as well as your samples from contamination. 8. Clean hood interior regularly _Biological Safety Cabinet only_: 9. Turn on the BSC fan 10 minutes before beginning work to allow adequate air filtration. 10. Keep the work area of the BSC free of unnecessary equipment or supplies. Clutter inside the BSC may impede proper airflow and the level of protection provided. Consider using wire racks or shelving to increase airflow around front and rear grills. 11. Clean all hood surfaces using 70% EtOH before and after use. Catalysts for Producing HMF from Cellulosic Biomass Barron Hewetson Removing carbohydrates from renewable plant material is the most challenging process in the production of platform chemicals, such as 5hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), from the structurally intertwined polysaccharides of lignocellulosic plant biomass. Lignocellulosic material is composed of three main components: lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Plant biomass fractionation is a vital step in the processing of any lignocellulose into value-added products and is often a result of a pretreatment process. Lignocellulosic material must undergo a pretreatment process to enhance the reactivity of cellulose. The hydrolysis of cellulose is important in fractionation because it liberates glucose, which can be converted to a wide range of fuels and chemicals of value. My research focuses on a cellulose solvent (85% w/w phosphoric acid) to remove and then recover cellulose from several plant biomass sources (corn stover, switchgrass, and poplar) and purified cellulose (Avicel). The resultant biomass is subjected to a conversion process where maleic acid hydrolyzes the cellulose to glucose, AlCl3 isomerizes the resultant glucose to fructose, and both acid catalysts dehydrate the fructose to HMF in a single reactor. The HMF is continuously extracted into 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF) in a 2-phase reactor. The results confirm that yields of HMF can be substantially increased by cellulose dissolution followed by a second hydrolysis using bi-functional Lewis/Bronsted acid catalysts to hydrolyze regenerated amorphous cellulose and dehydrate the resulting monosaccharides. Solvent Selection and Recovery for Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Acetic Acid and Water Mahdieh Aghazadeh The removal of acetic acid from biomass hydrolysate is crucial to increase the yield of ethanol during fermentation. The acetic acid released during hydrolysis works to slow down the fermentation and significantly decrease the yield of ethanol. The overall goal of this project is to explore the removal of acetic acid from the hydrolysate using liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). The use of liquid-liquid extraction to remove acetic acid from water is traditionally performed with ethyl acetate. This step is then coupled to a distillation tower to purify the acetic acid from the solvent stream. The drawback to this method is the operational expense of the distillation column. The use of a membrane for separation is more cost effective and possibly even more efficient. The work performed for this study was to use Aspen Plus to determine a reasonable solvent to recover Acetic Acid from water. The aim was to identify a solvent that has great affinity to acetic acid and low solubility in water, and also required the least extreme operating conditions as far as temperature and pH were concerned. Once the solvent was identified, the next step was to determine the best type of membrane. Based on the molecular size of the solvent and acetic acid and also their hydrophobicity differences, molecular sieve or zeolite-based membrane systems were tested.
