*LORRE April Safety Issue* 04/08/2013 REM has recently performed all lab hood testing and maintenance, and the Potter Building Deputy Phil Qualio is helping us with the sash cables order. The hood repairs will be completed by zones. This is a good opportunity for everyone to review the proper safety steps for using the lab hoods. _LORRE Lab Hood List:_ *Room #* *Amount* *Hood Type* *Notes* 359 1 General 336 1 General 335 1 Biological 333 3 General 256 0 - 254 1 General 252 1 General 237 1 General 237A 2 Biological 236 0 - 235 1 General 233 0 - 231 1 General 138 0 - B38 1 General _Lab Hood Operating Procedures_: 1. Use hood ONLY as marked on survey sticker (near sash) 2. Use hood only after verifying exhaust operation (Note approved working height for sash) 3. Do not block baffle slots 4. Keep all work and equipment 6" behind sash 5. If sash does not move smoothly, request maintenance immediately 6. Lower sash to 1" or as low as practical when hood is not in use 7. Wear eye protection, a lab coat, closed-toe shoes and disposable gloves to protect yourself as well as your samples from contamination. 8. Clean hood interior regularly _Biological Safety Cabinet only_: 9. Turn on the BSC fan 10 minutes before beginning work to allow adequate air filtration. 10. Keep the work area of the BSC free of unnecessary equipment or supplies. Clutter inside the BSC may impede proper airflow and the level of protection provided. Consider using wire racks or shelving to increase airflow around front and rear grills. 11. Clean all hood surfaces using 70% EtOH before and after use. Thank you for your cooperation, LORRE Safety Committee
* LORRE May Safety Issue * 5/6/2013 First, you may have noticed the past few months that there were students working in the LORRE labs on the Corn & Soybean Competition. We would like to point out one in particular, Degerhan Deger, who returned last week after his exams to clean out his group's work area, including the proper washing of all beakers and flasks that they used.He also made sure that all the chemicals they used were properly disposed of. We can all take note of this good practice- when finished with a project, please clean up your materials and work area completely before moving on to a new process. This will help the lab be more organized and well-maintained. Second, we have our annual REM recertification coming up in July. There are many things we need to do to prepare for this: 1. The self-audit must be completed for all LORRE lab areas (including storage and office areas) 2. We must correct any deficiencies found during the self-audit. We will need everyone's help and cooperation in preparing for the recertification, more details will be discussed in the next group meeting. Thanks! The LORRE Safety Committee
*Preparation for 2013 Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) Recertification* 5/13/2013 LORRE Safety Committee _Purpose_: Prepare for annual safety recertification _Responsible Parties_: All LORRE members (faculty, staff, visiting scholars, graduate/undergraduate students) _Emphasis_: Correct items identified in self-audits and 2012 building safety inspection _Timeline_: 5/17/2013Divide tasks and establish personal responsibilities for all members 6/14/2013Complete safety audits for all LORRE offices, labs, and storage rooms. Then, safety audits must be signed by the person performing the inspection and the professor in charge of your lab 6/28/2013LORRE safety activity day: Spend time during normal LORRE group meeting correcting issues identified in safety audit and improving the safety of work areas 7/5/2013Safety committee will have all safety program documents prepared and posted on the wall or door if necessary 7/?*/2013REM will perform safety inspections *Date of safety inspection still needs to be scheduled with REM If everyone does their best to pitch in we can make a huge improvement in the safety of our labs, hopefully we will have no problem passing the ISP inspection.
To All: Please review the following pictures. Each contains a mistake which was identified in the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) inspection and has been corrected. In preparation for the upcoming ISP re-certification and for the sake of good laboratory practice please ensure that any similar mistakes have been corrected.(This is an internal message for LORRE members only) 1.Open beaker is not suitable for sample collection. Use a screw cap with tube holes instead. 2.Glass capped container not suitable for sample addition. Use a screw cap with tube holes instead. 3.You cannot leave solution in an injector if it is not labeled. 4.Sink should be cleared after use. 5.A rubber stopper is a better option than foil for capping for long term storage. 6.Bottles containing any liquid should be labeled as soon as they are filled. 7.Biohazard bag too full. Biohazard bags should be autoclaved at least once a week. Samples containing salmonella or listeria should be autoclaved within a day. Thanks, LORE Safety Committee

August Safety Communication 8/1/2013 To All: On 7/10/2013, LORRE passed the 2013 ISP annual renewal certification. Congratulations and thank all of you for your support, cooperation, and help with the LORRE safety program. Based on REM ISP inspection's suggestion, there are two graduate students, *Barron Hewetson* and *Mahdieh Aghazadeh*, being added to our LORRE safety committee as student representatives. They will help strengthen our safety committee and help make the program more efficient. LORRE safety retraining will take place when the Fall semester starts back up. We will inform you when we have set an exact date and time. This year we are trying a new strategy for pipette maintenance.Rather than sending all the pipettes to a company for maintenance, as we have done in the past, Prof. Mosier has trained us to disassemble, clean, and verify the accuracy of the pipettes.Bring your pipettes to room # 333 next week and we will perform the cleaning and calibration. If there are any pipettes which have missing or broken parts we can send them in and have them replaced. In the future if new students need pipettes we will charge it to their project. Also, one student, Maurytania Lagunas lost a small black package containing white hearing aids (Siemens Brand) and she might have left them in room #333. If found, please email mlagona@purdue.edu <mailto:mlagona@purdue.edu>. Thanks, LORRE Safety committee
