I am currently a doctoral candidate in the Department of Anthropology here at Purdue. This past spring I received the Bilsland Strategic Initiative Fellowship from the Graduate School for the development PANEL (the Purdue African Network for Environments and Livelihoods). I am writing to inquire about the potential interest of the faculty, staff, and graduate students who may be interested in the development of this network and its future activities. One of the primary goals is to create a forum for Purdue graduate students and faculty conducting research related to or have interests in conservation, development, poverty alleviation, management policy and the sustainability of wildlife and human livelihoods in Africa. It aims to establish a working group, PANEL (Purdue African Network for the Environment and Livelihoods) to forge and maintain connections between students and faculty among departments, across colleges, and between centers and institutes for policy and the environment already in place at Purdue. Developing a network with a specific geographical focus will allow researchers across Purdue to apply interdisciplinary, nuanced approaches to problem solving within the complex political, economical, environmental landscapes unique to African countries. Disinfection of drinking water using solar UV: A low cost system applicable in developing countries Eric Gentil Mbonimpa Ph.D. Defense Seminar Major Professor: E. R. Blatchley III. Nov. 16, 2010 (Tuesday) 2:30pm in CIVL G212 Potable drinking water is a scarce resource in many parts of developing countries, especially rural areas. The WHO/UNICEF (2006) estimated that around 1.1 billion people do not have access to potable water and 2 million a year die due to diseases caused by pathogens in water. Due to limited financial means of these countries, low cost point-of-use systems are thought to be appropriate technology to treat water. Systems using solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation could be successful since many vulnerable countries are located where solar radiation is intense and abundant throughout the year. The goal of this study is to develop a simple and low cost point-of-use solar UV reactor to disinfect water. In this study wavelength-dependent microbial dose-response behavior was investigated using surrogates to pathogenic microbes. A solar radiation prediction method based on the SMARTS model was used to predict solar UV intensity as function of geographic location and time. A numerical modeling procedure using the discrete ordinate (DO) model and CFD software (FLUENT) was used to simulate UV dose (distribution) delivery to microorganisms. Then, the dose distribution was combined with the dose-response behavior using a segregated-flow model to predict microbial inactivation by the reactor. A prototype was produced and tested to validate the numerical modeling procedure. The inactivation results from the prototype were in agreement with numerical inactivation prediction. The modeling procedure permits parameters such as reactor dimensions and material properties to be varied to meet a treatment goal. For future study, other potential materials should be investigated and prototype tests should be carried out in regions where the system it to be applied. Linda S. Andrews Environmental Grant & the Blosser Environmental Travel Grant Deadline: October 29, 2010. Andrews to support research focused on improving the world. The Andrews Environmental Grant is a $1500 award to be used toward travel relating to the improvement of the world environment. This is a one-time award. The recipient must be a degree-seeking student enrolled in a graduate program researching means of improving the world environment. The Blosser Environmental Grant is a $1500 award to be used towards travel relating to the improvement of the world environment. This is a one-time award. New Spring Course Offering: Advanced Physico/Chemical Processes of Environmental Engineering

CE 697-013, Spring 2011 (3 credits) Advanced Physico/Chemical Processes of Environmental Engineering MWF 9:30-10:20 AM CIVL 2113 Blatchley Overall Course Description Physico/chemical processes are central to the behavior of most Environmental Engineering systems. Therefore, knowledge of fundamental physico/chemical processes and the principles that govern their behavior is of broad importance in the field. This class has been designed to provide students with advanced knowledge related to five general groups of physico/chemical processes: gas-liquid transfer, solid:fluid transfer, precipitation:dissolution, membranes, and photochemistry/photochemical reactors. The class is divided into five modules of roughly equal length (ca. three weeks), each dealing with one process group. The first four process groups relate to two-phase systems. In each case, lectures will begin with a presentation of fundamental equilibrium and transport principles. These background lectures will be followed by lectures that relate to the dynamic behavior of each system. Each module will conclude with several lectures that relate to specific examples that illustrate relevant governing principles, and techniques used to evaluate them. The fifth module will focus entirely on photochemistry and photochemical reactor theory. This is a rapidly emerging area that has importance in both engineered and natural systems. Moreover, it is an area where conventional methods of analysis often fail. Lectures in this module will begin with basic principles of photochemistry, followed by materials that relate to system dynamics where photochemistry plays an important role. For all modules, homework assignments will be given on a (roughly) weekly basis. Each module will conclude with an exam that covers module-related materials. Linda S.
