SPECIAL SEMINAR Sponsored by Ecological Science & Engineering Human Populations in River Corridors: Causes of Greatness & Magnificence of Cities Professor James W. Jawitz University of Florida; Gainesville, FL TUESDAY, November 7, 2017; 3:30-5:00 pm, Lilly Hall 2-425 Abstract: [earth_lights_4800]This talk describes our group's work studying the relationship between human settlements and water resources, especially along river networks. Urbanization is a powerful force for human development. Cities are centers of innovation and economic opportunity, but cities also concentrate demands and impacts on natural resources. Water is an attractive factor when people choose where to live. Early civilizations and modern cities primarily evolved around rivers. In early settlement periods, humans chose to locate close to rivers to satisfy their direct consumptive use as well as for navigation purposes. However, with increasing population, wealth, and technical sophistication, the direct reliance on proximity to rivers weakens. Yet at the same time, economic agglomeration effects of established settlements grows stronger. Here we examine the tension between the growth of cities and limits to growth imposed by water resources. Short Bio: [James Jawitz]Dr. Jawitz is Professor and Associate Chair in the Soil and Water Sciences Department at the University of Florida. He directs the Landscape Hydrology Laboratory. His research emphasizes human interactions with hydrologic systems at landscape scales. He also works on groundwater quality protection, wetland restoration, catchment-scale water management, and urban water supply. In 2016, he was a Dresden Senior Fellow at Technical University-Dresden (Germany), and taught Renaissance hydraulic engineering at Florence University of the Arts (Italy).

Children and significant others are all welcome (and good-natured dogs). (No we will not have our bison yet - they arrive on Nov 20th). :) * ALSO please share with other ESE students and faculty - apparently we ae having some issues with our ESE list-serves where names are just being dropped off for no reason we can figure out. * IF you need a ride, please let Christal or I know or ask another ESE student - we don't want you to miss just because you are missing a ride. The original invite inadvertently did not go out to faculty, which coupled to a few other calendar conflicts has led me to change the date to next Saturday Oct 28th. A group of six people from the company National Grid (www.nationalgrid.com<http://secure-web.cisco.com/1VxbxYXPdiHSBjlXVfeMyZxZ_wlhWa7JU3dMKXNnq45s3zb…>) are visiting School of Civil Engineering on Oct 20 (Friday), 2017. The primary interest of this visiting is to recruit graduate students for long term employment or short time internship. This may cover civil engineering at large, but in particular, geomatics, architectural, environmental, structural, and construction engineering. The agenda for their visit on Oct. 20 is as below: 1. 9:00 - 11:30am, HAMP 4158, meeting with interested faculty; 2. 1:30-2:20pm, HAMP 3153, Introduction to National Grid, Dr. Dale Kruchten, Director National Grid, Advanced Data & Analytics; 3. 2:30- 5:30pm, Wood Commons HAMP, meeting with interested graduate students. Interested faculty may feel free to join any of the events above. Please encourage interested students to attend the seminar and recruitment session in the afternoon.
