FYI - I thought you would enjoy/benefit from seeing the three main areas of consensus (pasted below) that resulted from last Fall's Sigma Xi conference on the Science of Global Policy. Some of you were here when the 2013 cohort did the 2014 #Communication Symposium that was also focused on communicating science to different groups. The last bullet is one of the main factors that spawned the Keystone Series in 2012, which does not occur every year, but we will be doing next spring. * Publicly funded organizations have a responsibility to report the results of scientific research in a meaningful manner to nonexperts (i.e., the public or policy makers) in a timely and accessible format, using nontechnical language and having relevance to the audience's respective lifestyles and policy decisions. * Storytelling is a valid and credible method of communicating science. The storyteller needs to deliver an accurate, transparent, and ethical interpretation of the scientific data. * Efforts must be made to improve public literacy concerning science by (i) training individuals in how to effectively communicate scientific information and (ii) teaching individuals how to more rationally evaluate the validity and relevance of the scientific information conveyed. The March-April 2016 issue of American Scientist<http://www.americanscientist.org> includes research and insights on three major topics-the effects of a changing climate on forestry, agriculture, gardening, tourism, and ecology; the increase in production and use of nanoparticles; and the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). In the article, "Spring Budburst in a Changing Climate<http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/feature/2016/2/spring-budburst-in-a…>," (Mar-Apr 2016, pages 102-109) authors Richard Primack and Amanda Gallinat describe the challenges we face as climate change causes leaf emergence times to desynchronize from evolved bird and insect activity patterns. Researchers at botanical gardens around the world are collectively monitoring leafing out times to understand this heretofore under-appreciated aspect of natural history, so that we can make better predictions about forest ecosystems as the climate changes. The forthcoming changes will affect a number of key industries, including forestry, agriculture, and tourism. A Spotlight interview<http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/pub/2016/2/dna-damage-and-nanoparti…> (Mar-Apr 2016, pages 70-72) with research chemist Bryant Nelson illuminates emerging issues related to the regulation of the booming nanoparticle production industry. Managing Editor Fenella Saunders spoke to Nelson about the possibility that nanoparticles may cause genetic damage. Nelson said that we need new methods and technologies to be able to detect and discriminate between the different types of nanomaterials that are potentially entering the environment. Johnson, the assistant vice provost for faculty recruitment and associate professor of environmental science for the University of Texas at Arlington, and recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, and Okoro, a NOAA water quality specialist and Johnson's former mentee, provide details about what works to attract and retain students, while emphasizing the need for additional resources to support underrepresented minorities in research. Wslr 116 Title: “Coupled natural-human systems approach to studying and managing locusts” Abstract: Coupled human and natural systems (CHANS) are systems of feedbacks linking people and ecosystems. Failing to account for these dynamic linkages results in intertemporal and spatial externalities, reaping benefits in the present but imposing costs on future and distant people, such as occurs with overgrazing. Recent findings about locust-nutrient dynamics create new opportunities to account for these linkages and develop new, sustainable strategies to understand and manage locust outbreaks. These findings in northeast China demonstrate that excessive livestock grazing promotes Mongolian locust (Oedaleus asiaticus) outbreaks in an unexpected way - by lowering plant nitrogen content due to soil degradation. This seminar will explore recent research integrating insect ecophysiology with economics and other social sciences to understand human-locust-livestock-nutrient interactions using a combination of lab and field studies and mathematical models. We work integratively with government agencies and farming communities in China, Australia, and Senegal to develop sustainable pest management approaches for improved food security.

FYI. Grad students will only be able to apply for the NSF only *once* while in grad school from now on with exception for one transition year (Fall 2016). Dear Graduate Chairs, Please pay close attention to the forwarded message below. My thanks to Ruth Streveler for forwarding it to me. Beginning with students entering grad school this fall, graduate students will be eligible to apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship only once while they are in graduate school – either in their first year or in their second year. (Students who applied for the GRF in Fall 2015 as first year grad students will be allowed to apply again in Fall 2016 – since this is a transition year.) NSF is hoping to get more students to apply in their senior year, thereby increasing the diversity of the students winning Graduate Research Fellowships and going on to grad school.
