2012 GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS COMPETITION Call for Nominations The Purdue University Chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, is conducting a Graduate Student Research Awards Competition in the format of a scientific poster session. There will be a first prize of $200, provided by Sigma Xi and The Graduate School, and recognition for other outstanding posters in each of the four research areas: * Physical Sciences * Life Sciences * Engineering * Behavioral and Social Sciences There will be one prize for each approximately 15 posters in a research area. In recent years, this has resulted in 2-3 top awards in both Life Sciences and in Engineering. To participate: 1. Submit an abstract of your research by 5:00 pm, Wednesday February 1, 2012. These will be published in a booklet. To obtain an abstract submission form, go to the Purdue Sigma Xi website (http://www.purdue.edu/research/sigmaxi/gsrpa.shtml) and click on 'Graduate student'. Applications, in electronic format, may be submitted to rhoward(a)purdue.edu<mailto:rhoward@purdue.edu> from January 9 to February 1, 2012. Those who submit abstracts will receive detailed information about poster preparation. 1. Present a poster at the 2012 SIGMA XI GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS COMPETITION POSTER SESSION in Steward Center, Rooms 214/218 on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. The session will run from 12:30 - 4:00 pm (for poster set up and viewing) and from 6:00 - 9:00 pm (for presentation and judging). Presenters are requested to hang their posters by 4:00 pm and to be at their posters from 6:00- 8:30 pm to answer questions from the judges. Judging will be conducted 1. Posters selected for award will be displayed at the Annual Sigma Xi Initiation Banquet to be held in the John Purdue Room in Stone Hall in April 2012. In addition, all award winners and those highlighted for Honorable Mention will be invited to attend the banquet in recognition of their outstanding research endeavors. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the excellence and diversity of scientific research at Purdue as well as to make others aware of your contributions. The Indiana Academy of Sciences will be meeting at the Stewart Center on the Purdue Campus March 10, 2012. This is a great venue for graduate students and faculty to present Indiana specific research. Attached is the announcement for the meeting and abstract submission is open now through February 10.

Keystone XL Pipeline Discussion THIS Wednesday with food- Please RSVP if you have not already

Last week, the Keystone XL pipeline proposal was rejected, which provided a wave of new information for the discussion! Although President Obama decided NOT to approve the current plan, the door for the company to resubmit a new plan remains open (the TransCanada CEO has indicated that the company will reapply with a modified route<http://torontostar.morningstar.ca/globalhome/industry/news.asp?articleid=53…>). So, there is a one-year window of opportunity during the election season to learn more and engage with the process as it evolves. Now's the time to get informed! Check out the resources on the website, Google the pipeline, and come to the Keystone Series event this Wednesday (Jan. 25th) from 5:30-7:30PM. The event will use a World Café format<https://owa.purdue.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=9ab7be7f430d46c49df4d5f6ce081fbd&UR…>, which is a series of informal conversations designed to tap our collective intelligence. ESE All-Cohort Series for Students and Faculty ESE Keystone Series Wednesday, January 25th 5:30-7:30PM Discovery Learning Research Center (DLRC) The series will be discussed further this coming Tuesday, Jan. 10th at ESE Colloquium/Seminar, Lilly 2-425 at 4:45PM. You may have heard about the proposed TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline <https://owa.purdue.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=778920ef180b40b59d314c08b0b0e80b&UR…> from the Canadian Tar Sands. The current Keystone XL proposal<http://www.keystonepipeline-xl.state.gov/clientsite/keystonexl.nsf?Open> exists in the middle of a climate change, air quality, water quality, environmental justice, indigenous representation, North American trade, energy security, and private property rights nexus. It relies on big picture thinkers to connect the dots, and detail-oriented masters to see the trees through the dense information forest<http://opencrs.com/document/R41668/2011-03-04/>. The pipeline proposal is one of the most significant interdisciplinary topics happening in ecological and policy sciences today. However, recent politicized rhetoric<http://www.hydrocarbonprocessing.com/Article/2956270/Latest-News/US-Republi…> has influenced national discussion on the topic. This provides an incredible and pressing opportunity to explore a complex, international issue from many different angles across physical and social science perspectives. Information leading up to and included in the January 25th event is intended to give ESE students and faculty an opportunity to become familiar with the topic, including the literature, viewpoints, and interdisciplinary perspectives surrounding the pipeline proposal. This all-cohort event will be followed by a panel discussion in February, open to ESE, other campus programs, and the public. Stay tuned for more updates, mark January 25th on your calendar, and to learn more about what's happening or become involved in the process from the ground up, consider attending Tuesday, Jan. 10th, ESE Colloquium/Seminar. We'll share more information, specifically how to be involved in the all-cohort effort to investigate information resources, develop key topics of interest, and engage the ESE and broader Purdue communities.
