The PCCRC is pleased to convene a conference on Network Resilience - An Interdisciplinary Approach to Understand the Recovery from Shocks of Social, Transportation, Energy and Distribution Networks on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Purdue's Discovery Park. Disaster mitigation and recovery policies qualify as global, grand challenges that require the insights from multiple disciplines working in concert for developing solutions. This one-day conference brings together international researchers and scholars, focusing on the resilience of networks in a variety of settings including energy, distribution, and transportation from social science and engineering perspectives. With the goal to generate interdisciplinary approaches to networks, the Purdue Network Resilience Conference will include lectures from experts in these fields, poster presentations by graduate students, open and closed sessions on these critical topics, and informal discussions outside the conference hall. First 2011 PCCRC Seminar: Dynamic Interactions among People, Livestock, and Savanna Ecosystems under Climate Change Dynamic Interactions among People, Livestock, and Savanna Ecosystems under Climate Change: The East Africa Climate-Land Interaction Project in Savanna Ecosystems Professor Jeffrey A. Andresen Michigan State University Thursday, February 17, 2011 3:30 p.m. Pfendler Auditorium Refreshments at 3:00pm in the Pfendler Gallery ABSTRACT: Land use transformation has accelerated in the savannah ecosystem of East Africa during recent decades, driven by increasing population, changing economy, changing governmental policy on land tenure, overseas investment, developing infrastructure, and the introduction and development of irrigated agriculture. These factors are likely to be influenced by climatic factors in pressuring people to transition their livelihoods among various options that include pastoralism, subsistence farming, cash farming, or employment at corporate plantations. All of the resulting land use/land cover transformations have the potential to alter regional climate. Much of this effect may be local, with surface-atmosphere fluxes of water and energy being modified, resulting in small-scale alterations in air circulation, temperature, and precipitation. A large, multi-institutional research team is attempting to understand the causes of these changes in the savanna, particularly the role of climate change. The East Africa Climate-Land Interaction Project in Savanna Ecosystems (EACLIPSE) is utilizing a comprehensive conceptual and methodological approach to modeling and statistical analysis of climate, land management, and ecosystem dynamics at two scales; the local scale where human decisions are made and ecosystem dynamics are most evident, and the regional scale where the cumulative effect of human activity and ecosystem change may significantly impact climate. This presentation will give an overview of the research questions, hypotheses and methodology of EACLIPSE as well as some initial research findings. BIO: Jeff Andresen is an associate professor of meteorology/climatology with Michigan State University’s Department of Geography and the State Climatologist for Michigan. A native of the Quad Cities area of Iowa/Illinois, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Illinois University in the field of meteorology, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University in the field of agricultural meteorology/climatology. Dr. Andresen has professional experience as an agricultural meteorologist with the National Weather Service and with the USDA's World Agricultural Outlook Board in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in international crop/weather impact assessment and production estimation. He currently serves as director of the Michigan Climatological Resources Program, co-director of the Enviro-weather system, which supports agricultural pest, production, and natural resource management decision-making across Michigan. From 2007-09, he served as an appointed member of Governor Granholm’s Michigan Climate Action Council. Teaching responsibilities include courses in agricultural climatology, meteorology, regional climatology, and physical geography. The primary focus of Andresen’s research has been the influence of weather and climate on agriculture, especially within Michigan and the Great Lakes Region. Current and past themes include; climatological trends and potential impacts, water use for agricultural irrigation, impacts associated with potential future changes in climate, weather and risk management in agricultural production systems, influence of land use changes on regional climate, winter hardiness and mortality of crops and insects, and the measurement and use of weather data for determination of plant disease risk.

ESE Program Coordinator Announcement

I am pleased to announce that Christal Musser has accepted our offer as the ESE Program Coordinator in the Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs starting February 14th. Her office will be located in 114 Hanson (at least for now). Christal has a BS degree from Ag Econ here at Purdue and been working as an Administrative Assistant in the Grad School Fellowship Office since 2006. Therefore, Christal is very familiar with Purdue and Grad School operations. In addition, she has considerable experience in program management, event planning, workshops, recruitment, and aiding students through various processes at Purdue. I am confident she will be a great asset to ESE as was Brent. Welcome Christal! We look forward to Christal joining the ESE-IGP next month and will have an informal gathering soon after to welcome her and introduce ourselves. Linda S. HELP to Review ESE Applicants for Fall 2011

I am asking all ESE Faculty to help in reviewing our current applicant pool so please try to do your best to help where you can. Please try to do as many reviews as you can in the next 2 weeks. THANK YOU! Instructions (below and attached): When you go to the website as noted below (under SharePoint Site), go to the Snapshot excel file in the “ESE 2011” folder and look for your name in the J column (labeled Faculty Preference). Names that appear in this column were provided by the applicant or were added based on another faculty’s review. If your name appears, I would like you to review the applicant. You may be one of those faculty that are listed frequently in which case please review as many as you can. The snapshot file should help you identify the ones you would prefer to review. Below as part of the SharePoint Site instructions are the questions you will be asked when doing a review. I realize this process will take more effort than in previous years when we actually provided you with a list of applicants to review, but we are short staffed until we replace Brent’s position. We still have numerous applications in process and it has been hard to keep up with work load. Fellowships We have already made nominations to the Graduate School for the Carver PhD and Knox MS fellowships (deadline is/was Jan 28). We can still process some nominations through some departments and colleges, but I need you to identify those you have great interest. There are also some fellowships available through the PCCRC (for PCCRC members only and with climate change relevance) – DUE Feb 1 to Rose Filley. The GS Fellows Manual provides the details on eligibility for the different fellowships. In addition, ESE has 3 fellowships (two ESE-Lynn PhDs that are 1+3; and one Andrews or Purdue Doctoral that are 2+2). See details for the nomination process for the ESE fellowships at the end of this email. (I am currently aware of two applicants that faculty have informed me will be nominated for one of the ESE fellowships (as noted in the Snapshot excel file). We need to move quickly to identify the best students that best align with your programs. I will be doing my best to make you aware of particular applicants that align well with each of your programs as I review the folders. Some of you have already gotten emails of such from me. I wanted to make you aware that are many applications are now uploaded with several reflecting excellent applicants. I have not started assigning reviewers yet, but please feel free to start investigating applicants that may fit well in your program (see below for site access and user details). ESE has 3 fellowships (two ESE-Lynn PhDs that are 1+3; and one Andrews or Purdue Doctoral that are 2+2). In addition, we have opportunity to nominate students to the Graduate School for the Carver PhD, Knox MS, and the Ludwig Kruhe PhD fellowship (deadlines are EARLY so we need to get these nominations submitted by Jan 19, 2011) in addition to nominations through departments and colleges. Deadlines vary for the different opportunities so as soon as you indentify a student you want to nominate for a fellowship, email me of your interest right away. Welcome Back

Happy New Year and welcome back to campus! I hope all of you had some opportunity to get a break and are now ready to get back to your studies and research. May 2011 be a productive time in your personal and professional development. Let am take this opportunity to welcome two new students to the ESE program: Peter Caldwell (recent graduate from Landscape Architecture at Purdue) and Rita Jaramillo (an ME graduate from Columbia), whom some of you met at the Oct. 2010 ESE Symposium. Welcome to both of you! I also want to keep you abreast of what we are doing in the ESE Colloquium (Tuesdays @ 3:30 in 2-425 Lilly Hall) for those of you who did not attend last semester or serve as a Peer-to-Peer Mentor for the Fall 2010 class. We invite you attend as you can or to fully participate by enrolling. We will be reading from the book The Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley. According to Ridley, "Rational Optimism holds that the world will pull out of the current crisis because the way that markets in goods, services, and ideas allow human beings to exchange and specialize honestly for the betterment of all" and that the world now is "richer, healthier, and kinder too, as much because of commerce as despite it." We will read & discuss several chapters from this book, and supplement that with related material from other sources, during the first 8 weeks of the semester. Perhaps we will find his optimism is justifiable and contagious, or maybe we will find some sort of middle ground (based on pragmatism).
