Another email about the OIGP Spring Reception - April 1st, but I want to explain a few things if you haven't taken the time to go to the website. Please don't be mad at me for junking up your inbox. :) 1. Poster/ Presentation (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.) Submission You do not have to present a Poster. You can do a PowerPoint if you would like. Maybe some of you have a PowerPoint already put together of your research and you don't have to worry about the cost of printing a poster. A 250-word abstract describing your project (be sure to include your Title!). 2. The Awards - Purdue Interdisciplinary Audience Choice Award Determined by the attendees of the OIGP Spring Reception the day of the event. The award consists of a certificate of recognition and a $250 prize. 1 award only for all the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs Certificates of Excellence in Research Judged by and ESE faculty member. 1 award for EACH of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs Most Outstanding Interdisciplinary Project Award The Most Outstanding Interdisciplinary Project Award (MOIPA) is a financial award given to a recipient and runner-up whose research is deemed, by a faculty panel, to be particularly interdisciplinary. A project statement, 1000 words maximum - See the website for complete details. NOTE - If you are not able to make the March 1st deadline (tomorrow), please let me know. OIGP Reception - Poster/Presentation deadline - Friday, March 1st. You are invited to present your interdisciplinary research at the Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate Program's Spring Reception. The Spring Reception is a celebration of interdisciplinary graduate research, conducted like a poster session. Presentations will be in either poster or multimedia (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.) form, although most ESE students will likely present using posters. Presenters are welcome to share research they have presented in another forum. As a presenter, you will be automatically considered for the Certificate of Excellence in ESE Research, as well as the Purdue Interdisciplinary Audience Choice Award (a crowd preference award with a $250 monetary prize), the winners of which will be determined during the event. Finally, as a student in an interdisciplinary program, you are eligible to apply for the Most Outstanding Interdisciplinary Project Award (MOIPA; NOTE: you must fill out the MOIPA application found on the Spring Reception website to be considered for the MOIPA). The winner of the MOIPA will receive a $750 monetary award and be asked to present a 10 minute keynote presentation at the Spring Reception. Additionally, the MOIPA runner-up will receive a $250 award. ESE Keystone Series: Tomorrow’s C4E Event and Save the Date!

Get ready for this year’s ESE Keystone Series on High Volume Shale Gas Extraction in three easy steps: 1. Get the conversation started: Attend tomorrow’s (Wednesday) audience-interactive forum with Ian Urbina, hosted by the Center for the Environment (C4E). Ian is a senior investigative reporter and author of "Drilling Down," The New York Times groundbreaking series on hydraulic fracturing. March 27th from 5:30PM-8:00PM for the ESE World Café World Café is a meeting format designed to allow participants to share their knowledge and passion about a subject through facilitated conversations. Start thinking about your questions for our all-campus panel of interdisciplinary perspectives. We’re working to bring some incredible people that represent sociological and biophysical impacts, economics, industry and regulation, and grassroots voices in the media. Coming the second week in April: date, time, and location TBA in coming weeks! The ESE Keystone Series is a combination of events that brings ESE students, faculty, and staff together with the broader campus and Lafayette/West Lafayette communities to discuss a current, controversial environmental topic from an interdisciplinary perspective. Keystone is centered on open discussion that is free from political bias or topic advocacy. It focuses on conversations that encourage critical thinking and respectful exchange to analyze the complexities that are often lost in the national debate. Laura Page Master's Defense Ecological Sciences and Engineering Agricultural and Biological Engineering Effect of anaerobic dairy manure co-digestion and effluent solid separation on volatile fatty acids during manure storage Wednesday, February 20, 2013 1:00 PM ABE, Room 212 Abstract Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are among the most abundant organic compounds found in animal manure and act as important intermediates in the production of methane under anaerobic digestion (AD). However, VFA also contribute to odor emissions from manure. Anaerobic digestion and separation of solids may help to reduce odor pollution during manure storage and subsequent land application. Little information about the characteristics and concentrations of VFA in dairy manure related to AD is available. This thesis presents the results of VFA production during two three-month storage studies of dairy manure collected from four different sources on a dairy: a dairy barn (raw), the inlet of an anaerobic digester (influent), the digester outlet (effluent), and the effluent following solids separation (effluent SS). Significant temporal and spatial variations in VFA concentrations were observed in both studies. Results showed AD significantly reduced the formation of VFA in the effluent, and additional reductions occurred from separation of solids. This study revealed that the complexity of VFA characteristics made it difficult to reliably model and predict the concentrations and compositions of VFA in dairy manure. ESE applciations to Review Reminder

Hello ESE Faculty, This is a reminder that we need to have applications reviewed. Please log into SharePoint and review and give feedback on applications. I have added a column to the "snapshot" that shows how many reviews we have for applications. At this point applications have only been reviewed by 1 faculty member and some haven't been reviewed at all. The details on how to access SharePoint are below. Below are instructions. 1. Details on accessing SharePoint. 2. Instructions to submit your reviews. 3. "Snapshot in progress" excel file 1. Accessing SharePoint We use a SharePoint website for easy access to all applications electronically Go to the ESE webpage<http://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/ese/>, then hover over "For Faculty" and click "ESE Faculty Login" User name = onepurdue\career account For example - onepurdue\musser Password= career account password In the column on the left, click on the "ESE 2013" link/folder under Documents. Then open the FACULTY REVIEW APPLICATIONS FOLDER to access each student application. This folder will continue to receive new applications as they become complete in the next week or so. (We have admitted 11 students so far and we will be working to find them fellowships, assistantships, etc.) Your reviews are very important and knowing if you have funding possibilities is helpful too. 2. Submit your Reviews Please begin reviewing the applications and submitting your reviews via the form in SharePoint. Once logged into SharePoint, on the left column, at the top, Click on 2013 Survey Applicant Reviews. Then click on "Respond to this Survey". Complete the Survey to let us know your thought on the applications you reviewed. Each applicant will be reviewed by at least three faculty members. 3. Snapshot in Progress Located in the "ESE 2013" link/folder on the left column. The Snapshot is an excel file that list all the applicants names, GRE Scores, faculty interest, etc. This file is a starting point to see which applications you would like to take a closer look at. As more applications are submitted and complete, the file will be updated. Please let me know if you have any questions about the process or logging into SharePoint.
