There will be six presentation with each focused on the limits/thresholds set by Rockstrom et al. (4 page paper attached: "A safe operating space for humanity - Identifying and quantifying planetary boundaries that must not be transgressed could help prevent human activities from causing unacceptable environmental change....") for a specific focus area. Focus areas that will be highlighted are: * Biodiversity loss * Biogeochemical flow boundaries * Change in land use * Climate change * Global freshwater use * Integration and implementation Please join us in Lily 2-425, from 3:30-6:30pm, as they present their findings and open the floor for what will likely be a lively discussion and enjoy pizza, subs, and treats. Symposium on Data-Driven Approaches to Droughts (DDAD2011), June 21-22, 2011 Overview A diverse team of researchers, including the DRINET project team, will host a symposium focusing on data-driven approaches for characterizing, understanding and modeling droughts. The symposium will feature invited speakers from various scientific domains, industry and other national scale data related projects, as well as poster presentations and panel discussions. It will be held from June 21-22, 2011 at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. This symposium is sponsored by the National Science Foundation through the Office of Cyberinfrastructure and the Hydrological Sciences Division, and is in partnership with EWRI (Environmental & Water Resources Institute of ASCE) and US Department of Agriculture - National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA). Download symposium flyer<https://drinet.hubzero.org/resources/159/download/drinet_sym_flyer_4-4-11.p…> Website: https://drinet.hubzero.org/symposiuminfo Background Deep societal and economic impacts from drought conditions mandate a better understanding of how droughts are characterized and how drought mitigation strategies are designed. Yet, droughts continue to be one of the most difficult natural disasters to model. A variety of datasets and human impressions are currently documented within drought maps such as the US Drought Monitor. The data come from different domains: satellite data for soil and vegetation state, weather and climatic data including precipitation, temperature, wind trajectories and their anomalies, and hydrological data such as water levels in reservoirs and streams. Additionally, qualitative information related to analogous years (e.g., El Nino states), on ground impacts, timing of droughts, and regional vulnerability or resilience are also factored into the descriptions of the drought states. Many questions remain about characterizing drought risk in different settings and applications, and on how current drought maps and datasets can be paired with other data sources to develop new understanding about drought triggers and impacts. Linkages between droughts and agriculture, air quality, water quality, human health, urbanization, etc. need to be established, and data requirements for determining the economic and societal impacts need to be better understood. This symposium will serve as a forum for researchers and stakeholders to interact and exchange current and emerging techniques for drought characterization, along with methods for local and regional data collection, compilation, and format standardization. This symposium will attract studies that demonstrate how the new knowledge base created from the cyberinfrastructure for data collection, when combined with visualization techniques, leads to improved understanding and practical applications. It will feature keynote speakers, a series of presentations, posters, and panel discussions. Subject: Seminar Announcement - April 20 Chuck Hassebrook The Department of Agricultural Economics is hosting a seminar speaker on April 20 that I think will be on interest to many of you. Chuck Hassebrook serves as Executive Director of the Center for Rural Affairs.....and has a high national profile on Federal agriculture, natural resource and rural development issues and policy. For example, he served on the National Commission on Small Farms; and co-chaired the USDA Agricultural Science and Technology Review Board. From: Lee, Linda S Sent: Monday, April 11, 2011 10:00 AM Subject: Growing Opportunities for MS & PhD level students in the Congressional Research Service On Friday I had the opportunity to hear a very informative presentation from a Purdue ABE graduate who is now an information analyst in the Congressional Research Service Office. This office expects a 50% + turnover of their current staff in the next 5 years, thus has re-started their graduate recruitment program (after 8 years of it being dormant - apparently once you take a job at CRS there you never want to leave). This program is open to students who have completed allows you to get your foot in the door for an immediate job or soon after you graduate. This job location is Washington DC where you will interact regularly with congressional staffers, etc. to provide timely information from the literature and through conversations with scientists on current research on the topic within your designated area. There are several areas including in the natural Resource area. The Congressional Research Service (CRS) is accepting applications for its Graduate Recruit Program. The program seeks to attract a diverse pool of highly qualified graduate students, as well as CRS and Library staff who already possess graduate degrees, who have the desire to assist Congress with its deliberations and legislative decisions. The 2011 Graduate Recruit Program offers a variety of paid positions, including analyst, information research specialist, financial management specialist and human capital management specialist positions. A list of full position titles appears below. Appointments are for a period of up to 120 days beginning in the summer of 2011. Those students who return to school to complete their advanced degree program may be eligible for a permanent position after they obtain their degree.
