EPA STAR Fellowship Synopsis of Program: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is offering Graduate Fellowships for master's and doctoral level students in environmental fields of study. The deadline is November 5, 2010 at 4:00 PM for receipt of paper applications, and November 5, 2010 at 11:59:59 PM ET for submittal of electronic applications to Grants.gov. Subject to availability of funding, the Agency plans to award approximately 105 new fellowships by June 30, 2011. Master's level students may receive support for a maximum of two years. Doctoral students may be supported for a maximum of three years, usable over a period of five years. The fellowship program provides up to $42,000 per year of support per fellowship. There appears to be some confusion on eligibility - the restriction of completion of first year is ONLY for people applying for a fellowship for their MS and have completed their first year at the MS level already. It does not apply to PhD students (#2 below is the limit of eligibility of PhD students)in their current MS program. Applicants who are in a graduate program at the time of application and meet either of the following two criteria as of November 5, 2010 ARE NOT eligible to receive a fellowship: 1) have completed more than one year in their current master's program; or 2) have completed more than four years in their current doctoral program. ESE Fun this Thursday night 6-9pm (Oct 14) at LBC

Reminder: ESE Fun Gathering this Thursday night 6-9pm (and beyond for some based on last year) at the upper floor of the Lafayette Brewing Company (622 Main St, Lafayette). I know a few of you may not be able to come until later in the evening due to exams and other conflicts, but still come – there will be plenty of food and we can order more food as needed. Feel free to bring a friend or two with you. Friends are welcomed! There will be pool, foosball, and bag toss to play. If you play an instrument and want to informally jam with some other ESEers – email Craig Stinson (cstinson(a)purdue.edu<mailto:cstinson@purdue.edu>) The menu: Big Nacho Platters, Cheesy Potato Munchers, Homemade Pub Brew Chips, and several kinds of pizza including veggie, barbecue pork, Thai chicken with peanut sauce, Brewhouse supreme, and North of the Border (Dijon mustard sauce instead of a red sauce). This is a reminder of October deadline for applying for travel award opportunities offered by the graduate school. Frederick N. Andrews Environmental Grant & the Blosser Environmental Travel Grant Deadline: October 29, 2010. Awarded by the Graduate School http://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/funding/ The Andrews Environmental Grant was established in honor of Dr. Frederick N. Andrews to support research focused on improving the world. The Andrews Environmental Grant is a $1500 award to be used toward travel relating to the improvement of the world environment. This is a one-time award. The recipient must be a degree-seeking student enrolled in a graduate program researching means of improving the world environment. The Blosser Environmental Grant is a $1500 award to be used towards travel relating to the improvement of the world environment. This is a one-time award. The Blosser Environmental Grant was established in honor of Dr. Russell O. Blosser to support graduate student majoring in an area of environmental sciences. Preference is given to students affiliated with the Chi Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. The recipient must be a degree-seeking student enrolled in a graduate program researching means of improving the world environment. A.H. Ismail Interdisciplinary Doctoral Research Travel Award Deadline: October 22, 2010. Awarded by the Graduate School http://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/funding/ The A.H. Ismail Interdisciplinary Program Doctoral Research Travel Award competition provides funds to assist students in the presentation of their doctoral research at a national or international conference. The amount of the award will vary, dependent on the conference destination and travel expenses. Students who have received this award in previous years may compete, but they will receive lower priority for receiving awards.

October 7, 2010 From: Brent Ladd, ESE Program Manager Dear ESE Faculty: This is a farewell of sorts, in that I have accepted a new position at Purdue as the Education Director for the NSF Science of Information Center* based in the Computer Science Department effective in October (Oct. 8th last day in ESE office). It has been a pleasure working with each of you, and I am proud of the successes we have collectively achieved in building the Ecological Sciences and Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate Program and providing unique opportunities for students and faculty. I’m sure I will have the opportunity to continue to work with some of you in the future, as my new duties will include collaborating with existing programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels here at Purdue (along with the STC’s eight partner institutions Bryn Mawr College, Howard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, UC-Berkeley, UC-San Diego, and University of Illinois). We are very pleased that current ESE PhD student, Lindsey Payne, will be serving part-time for the program until a new hire is made for ESE program manager. Please welcome her.
