Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Survey on Defects Introduced by Flash Sintering Process" By Bo Yang Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Xinghang Zhang ABSTRACT Flash sintering is a novel sintering technique utilizing external electric field to densify ceramic green body to near full density within a few seconds. The required furnace temperature is typically lower than the conventional sintering technique. The short dwell time and low sintering temperature can dramatically cut down the energy consumption and enable fabrication of ultra-fine grain structure. Ever since first reported in 2010, flash sintering has been widely studied among many ceramic systems. However, a general mechanism explaining the rapid densification rate has not yet been identified. Currently, two competing hypotheses, (1) fast densification rate due to Joule heating, and (2) enhanced diffusion coefficient due to the avalanche of point defects, are under debate. This report summarizes some major findings on the defects induced in numerous flash sintered ceramics. One predominant defect is oxygen vacancy that may play an important role during the onset of flash sintering. In addition, other types of defects, such as dislocations, stacking faults, and secondary phases, have been reported. The nature of defects and their nucleation sites vary among different ceramic systems. Despite a large number of reports covering flash sintering of ceramics, the in-depth understanding on the correlation between possible flash sintering mechanisms and resultant microstructures remains limited. More systematic microstructural studies should be conducted to identify the connection between defects and flash sintering mechanisms. Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 Time: 8:30 A.M. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Directed Self-Assembly of Oxide-oxide Nanocomposite Thin Films" By Bethany Rutherford Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Haiyan Wang ABSTRACT Nanocomposite thin films are materials that have the potential to improve and tune many properties for various applications in electronics, memory storage, and optics. Materials properties are a consequence of their structure, so being able to manipulate the nanostructure of oxide-oxide nanocomposite thin films is important for modifying them for device purposes. Thin film growth involves many factors: diffusion, substrate surface conditions, source material composition, and deposition temperature and rate. The two main approaches to thin film fabrication are bottom-up and top-down. Bottom-up growth focuses on the self-assembly of the nanostructure. This review discusses the merits of different methods that can be used to direct the self-assembly of oxide-oxide nanocomposite thin film growth based on substrate manipulation and the future outlook on this area of research. Hello colleagues, I lead Sandia National Laboratories' Hydrogen and Materials Science department, which performs scientific and engineering research to develop fundamental understanding on the aging of materials in environments, including hydrogen and its isotopes, and applies this understanding to determine its effects on the performance and reliability of materials. I am currently looking to fill two research positions: JobID 668911 - Fatigue, Fracture and Failure of Metals Post-Doctoral Researcher: I am seeking a mechanical engineer or materials scientist who has recently earned their Ph.D. to work with my team to develop a comprehensive understanding of fatigue, fracture and failure of structural materials, such as steel and aluminum alloys and their welds. This scope includes how fracture and damage processes in materials change upon exposure to environments such as hydrogen, hydrogen isotopes, sub-ambient temperature and moisture. JobID 669481 - Materials/Environmental Interactions Scientist: I am seeking a Ph.D. in metallurgy, nuclear engineering, physics, or materials science to work with my team to conduct experimental studies of how different chemical environments (including hydrogen, tritium, supercritical CO2, and/or various salts) change material microstructure and properties. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Durable Icephobic Coating for Aluminum Substrate" By Sathish Kumar Ranganathan Purdue MSE Ph.D. Final Exam Advisors: Professor Jeffrey P. Youngblood and Professor John A. Howarter ABSTRACT Development of durable icephobic coating and reduction of ice accumulation on the product surfaces has proven to be a challenging task in the past decade. To obtain a durable icephobic coating, Fluoro-Ethylene-Alkyl-Vinyl-Ether (FEVE) binder was selected and smooth and rough surface coating formulations were developed. Targeting overhead power transmission line application, FEVE binder-based coating formulations were validated at extreme thermal ageing conditions (200oC for 60 days) and have studied retention of icephobic performance. These coatings were also benchmarked with commercially available silicone-epoxy coating and superhydrophobic aerosol coating. FEVE based coatings had retained its surface characteristics and icephobic performance after aggressive thermal ageing as compare to commercial benchmark coatings. Further to map-out icephobic material design space and to create a scientific understanding, silicone-based coating materials were selected with varying material and surface characteristics such as water contact angle (hydrophilic, hydrophobic and superhydrophobic), surface roughness (3000 GS, 300 GS and 30 GS) and elastic modulus (8 psi to 280 psi). Experiment results suggest that hydrophobic silicone, low modulus coatings ice adhesion strength did not influence by roughness as compare to higher modulus silicone coatings. The critical modulus to obtain a low ice adhesion surface was identified as below 100 psi. Superhydrophobic coating has resulted in low ice adhesion strength across the coating modulus and roughness ranges. Additionally, these silicone coatings were further validated for ice accumulation weight increase using automated ice accumulation test set-up. Superhydrophobic coating has outperformed all other coatings with less ice weight accumulation, however the test sample placement angle against water spray direction significantly affects the ice accumulation test results. These results and learnings were used to establish durable icephobic coating material design space. Date: Wednesday, October 16, 2019 Time: 10:30 A.M. Place: RHPH 162
