REM recently completed their annual building inspection and lab violations have been emailed to all lab supervisors. Please correct all issues and return the form to Jenni Fifer<mailto:fiferj@purdue.edu>. • Last day of face-to-face courses is Tuesday, Nov. 24. However, an exception has been made for MSE 499 students, senior design, and other undergraduate researchers, who are allowed to continue working in on-campus laboratories as permitted by their project advisors until December 11th. • Purdue Winter Recess is Dec. 23 through Jan. 1. And please encourage others in the MSE family to do the same. Let’s all stay safe and protect one another. • Winter eating & drinking guidelines for ARMS and MSEE: As you know, MSE has taken a strict stance on eating and drinking in the building by originally allowing no food to be consumed in common areas. However, as winter approaches, it is becoming increasing difficult to find a suitable place to eat. Therefore, MSE is now allowing you to eat in common areas under the following restrictions: • Public areas with seating are limited in MSEE and ARMS. These include the atriums, Amelia’s, and the second floor common area near the MSE computer lab. Please maintain more than 6 ft between you and the nearest individual. Additionally, you can eat in your office if you are the only individual. • Eating in the Effron Lounge is not permitted, as it is a sterilization room only. • Please do not sit to eat where there is not already a chair or couch. See emails from Kelsie Newberry. **** PUMA Safety Committee Updates **** PUMA Lab Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Nov. 13 and will include the following spaces: ARMS 2093 XRD Lab, ARMS 2132 Polishing Lab, ARMS 2138 Processing Lab, ARMS 2170 Ceramics Lab, ARMS 2191 Mechanical Testing Lab. Watch for PUMA emails for details. **** Annual Safety Training Reminder **** As described in the MSE safety training policy (posted here<https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/MSE/Facilities/Safet…>), each academic year, all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers are required to complete the MSE-specific safety training (slides & quiz) administered through Brightspace. Please note that Hazard Communication training is no longer a separate required training. Forwarding on behalf of MSE Head and Professor, David Bahr: ________________________________ Everyone, With reduced on campus presence of many individuals our spaces are, to be blunt, emptier than normal. Recently the Purdue police had to escort a man off campus who was harassing a female employee in ARMS two days in a row. He was no affiliation to Purdue, our understanding is that he’d wandered in and was a problem. With ARMS and other buildings being open to the public 24/7, we never know who is in the building, and cameras can only help so much. This is especially concerning when many people are working remotely, and there are many times where only a few people are around. Everyone should be careful, aware of your surroundings, and don’t hesitate to call someone if needed. As they say, if you see something, say something. As a reminder, if you need help and don’t have your cell, there are emergency phones stationed throughout the halls. And if you see suspicious behavior (someone trying doors, peeking in widows, etc) please report it to the police. If you want to also let Lisa or Dave know to circulate to the department please feel free. Non-emergency reporting can be done via email (ehps(a)purdue.edu<mailto:ehps@purdue.edu>) or Phone: (765) 494-8221 If you see someone in an at risk situation, you can always call 911 which directly contacts the Purdue Police. You are welcome to borrow it anytime, but need to return it when finished, as we only have one cart designated for packages/lab deliveries. This free and open workshop will focus on deep learning methods for material science including convolutional neural networks and autoencoders. Title: Deep learning methods for material science Date/Time: 21st October 2020 / 1 PM – 2 PM EDT Registration is now open: https://nanohub.org/groups/ml/handsontraining This workshop is a part of nanoHUB's Hands-on Data Science and Machine Learning Training Series and is aimed at active researchers and educators, no prior coding experience is required.
