Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Electric-Field Alignment of Polymer Blends with Dispersed Nanoparticles for Mesoporous Reactive Membranes" By Sung Ho Yook Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Mukerrem Cakmak ABSTRACT Polymer blends of two immiscible polymers show unique properties due to the combination of mechanical, electronical, and optical properties of two different materials. The morphologies of polymer blends can be droplets or bicontinuous morphologies according to the production conditions. The 3D-bicontinuous morphology are particularly interesting among the morphologies, because they can be practically applied to mesoporous polymer membranes or heterojunction photovoltaic cells. However, the bicontinuous morphologies are not stable because each polymer phase tends to reduce interfacial area between two polymers by coarsening small domains to large domains. One of the ways to stabilize bicontinuous morphologies is to add nanoparticles. Nanoparticles located either in one polymer phase or at interface can retard the coarsening process. Meanwhile, the morphology of polymer blends with nanoparticles also can be influenced by the electric fields. Nanoparticles and polymer phases can be aligned parallel to the electric field direction if two polymers and nanoparticles show the difference in dielectric constants. Therefore, the electric field effect on nanoparticles stabilized morphologies in a polymer blend must be interesting topic. In this presentation, nanoparticle stabilized polymer blends and the electric field effects on them will be discussed. The turning materials properties by aligning polymer blends with dispersed nanoparticles in the electric field also will be suggested. Date: Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Time: 1:00 P.M. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Investigation of Laser-Matter Interaction Utilizing Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy" By Xiaohui Xu Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Volkan Ortalan ABSTRACT Laser-matter interactions have been extensively investigated in the past few decades. Specifically, pulsed laser owns unique properties compared with continuous wave laser, which makes it popular in many fields. The effect of pulsed laser on materials is related to the nature of the material and width of laser pulse duration. By carefully adjusting laser pulse width and selecting the materials, laser synthesis can be achieved either by a bottom-up or a top-down way. Laser welding of plasmonic materials is another significant research area, whose mechanisms have not been fully understood. With the advent of the ultrafast transmission electron microscopy (UTEM), the in-situ investigation of laser-matter interactions becomes possible with both high spatial and temporal resolutions. Therefore, it is a unique instrument to explore possible laser synthesis routes and to obtain fundamental insights into the mechanisms of laser-matter interactions in general. We are currently at $620,858, almost 79% toward our original goal of $785.000 Keep advocating, keep informing, keep encouraging, keep doing the amazing work you are doing! All Deans/Dept Heads/Directors will be contacted next week after the next Email is sent from United Way on November 1st and asked to email their units to encourage individuals to participate. Please note: the Purdue campaign ends on Nov. 15 and will culminate with a Victory Celebration Luncheon. It will be important to share with your areas that for those that want to make a pledge to the campaign, they must do so BEFORE Nov. 15. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Deformation Twinning in Nanocrystalline Al" By Yifan Zhang Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Xinghang Zhang ABSTRACT Deformation twinning is one of the major deformation mechanisms in metallic materials to accommodate shear strain and plastic deformation. As widely accepted, Al rarely deforms via deformation twinning because of its high stacking fault energy (142-165 mJ/m2). Only under certain conditions, such as cryogenic temperature, extremely high strain rate, addition of solutes as well as nanoscale grain size, can deformation twins form in Al. Experimental studies and molecular dynamic simulations have revealed the important roles of grain boundaries on the deformation twinning in nanocrystalline (NC)Al. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Mechano Optical Behaviors of Nanocomposite Hydrogels" By Zeynep Mutlu Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Mukerrem Cakmak ABSTRACT Hydrogels are made of three-dimensional polymer networks which have high water content. There are various kind of applications of hydrogels such as a superabsorbent material, scaffold for tissue engineering, wound care material, and contact lens. Carbon-based, polymeric, ceramic, and metallic nanoparticles can be integrated within the hydrogel networks to obtain nanocomposites with superior. There is a plethora of work done on mechanical behaviors of nanocomposite hydrogels; however, a real-time mechano-optical behavior that can reveal important information regarding the molecular orientation of polymer chains and clay nanoparticles during large deformation is still lacking. This presentation discusses the real-time mechano-optical study on strain-induced optical anisotropy of nanocomposite hydrogels synthesized from DMA and Laponite XLG nano-clay. Please consider attending the following Oct. 26, at 11:00 a.m., in Physics 202: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Nanocomposites: Approach for Achieving Novel Physical Properties" By Shikhar Misra Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Haiyan Wang ABSTRACT With a multitude of materials getting discovered nowadays with unique and novel properties, it is highly desirable to combine properties of different materials. Nanocomposites provide such a way to combine different properties of materials to be used in a wide range of applications. Presently, nanocomposites fi a range of applications from the fi of data storage, storing energy high temperature superconductors, high strength-to-weight ratio materials and efficient photocatalysts and photovoltaics. Getting enhanced functionalities and versatility is the main motivation behind the development of nanocomposites. The properties of the nanocomposite are strongly dependent on the size, distribution and geometry of the dispersed species. This is where designing nanocomposites and controlling its microstructure becomes important for tuning the physical properties of nanocomposites. Application of nanocomposites can be broadly divided based on two types of interaction: (i) electron-matter interaction and (ii) photon-matter interaction. Based on electron-matter interaction and photon-matter interaction, materials should be chosen appropriately that will result in coupling of functionalities such as ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and optical properties. He leads the Global Engineering Education Collaboratory (GEEC) research group, and holds an NSF CAREER award to study boundary-spanning roles and competencies among early career engineers. Dr. Jesiek draws on expertise from engineering, computing, and the social sciences to advance understanding of geographic, disciplinary, and historical variations in engineering education and practice.
