Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Micromechanical Analysis and Characterization of Materials with Spatially Distinct Microstructural Features" By Raheleh Mohammad Rahimi Purdue MSE Ph.D. Final Exam Advisor: Professor David F. Bahr ABSTRACT Correlations between materials microstructural properties and mechanical behavior are important for materials development. As materials characterization methods have been restricted to instrument accessibility, sample dimensions and economical aspects, developing functional techniques in order to obtain better understanding of materials behavior in micro and nano scale is crucial. Procedures for assessing and interpreting the mechanical responses at small scales, combined with investigating the microstructure are considered as significant steps to design and develop the effective frameworks for evaluating bulk properties. This research demonstrates that how fundamental understanding of microstructures can assist interpreting of mechanical performance of bulk materials. Testing of materials at small scales is very important because the mechanical failure of any bulk material starts with the formation, extension, or local accumulation of initially small defects, leading finally to a fracture. Thus, any bulk material profits from an in-depth understanding of its deformation and mechanical phenomena at the nano- and micrometer length scale. This thesis shows how the micro constituents' interactions and grain boundaries reactions to dislocations in alloys and thin films contribute to understanding material flow behavior and differences in the mechanical properties of these materials in a wide range of material systems with variations in appropriate sizes which need to be probed. Among other things, this work shows that sources of variation can be specified and quantified as predictive tools for designing materials. The strength and strain hardening of martensite and ferrite in a dual phase steel with a grain size less than 5 μm were determined using an inverse technique. The yield strengths of the ferrite and martensite phases are calculated as 370 MPa and 950 MPa respectively. The calculated hardening exponent of the alloy was exactly same as tensile test result (0.11). The constrain phenomena was obviously effective in deformation of this elastic-plastic alloy. Also the differences in hardness and pop-in behavior were used to understand of the influences of different types of grain boundaries, high density dislocations, and twins in Al thin films before and after plasticity. MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Investigation of the Residual Stresses after Shot Peening Process" By Siavash Ghanbari Purdue MSE Ph.D. Final Exam Advisor: Professor David F. Bahr ABSTRACT Mechanical surface treatments using an elastic-plastic cold working process can develop residual stresses on the substrate or in the bulk. Compressive residual stresses increase resistance against surface crack propagation, so the mechanical performance can be improved by this technique. Compressive residual stresses can be created by different methods such as hammering, rolling, and shot peening. Shot peening is a well-established method to induce compressive residual stresses in the metallic components using cold working, and often ascribed to being beneficial to fatigue life in the aerospace and automobile industries. In this method, the surface is bombarded by high-velocity spherical balls which cause plastic deformation of the substrate, leading to a residual compressive stress after shot peening on the surface of the part. Also, there is a relationship between stress coverage on the surface and surface roughness. Shot peening influences of surface roughness, especially, the resulting surface roughness have been affected by peening size or time. Computational modeling is an appropriate and effective way which can predict the amount of produced residual stresses and plastic deformation to obtain surface roughness after shot peening simulation. In this thesis work, an experimental method to measure the magnitude of the residual stress using a nanoindentation technique was developed. The experimental method was compared to both computational predictions (in aluminum) and with x-ray diffraction measurements of stress (in an alloy steel). The current study validates the relation between nanoindentation method and numerical simulation for assessing the surface residual stresses resulted from single or multiple shot peening processes. Finally, to assess the surface roughness, a 3-D Finite Element Modeling (FEM) has been developed to compare three different shot sizes and mixed shots with simultaneous impact or sequence impacts. ARMS 2300/2200 Suite Doors Left Unlocked

It has been recently reported that doors leading into the ARMS 2300 and 2200 faculty office suites have been left unlocked at night after the staff has locked them before leaving at 5:00. As a reminder the office suite doors are unlocked 8 am-5 pm, M-F only, and are to be locked outside of regular office hours (evenings/weekends). If you unlock a door, including the hallway door between grad offices and the 2200 suite, please be sure you relock it immediately so it's not forgotten. We also do not allow students (ugrad/grad), nor other departments in the office suites outside of office hours unless they are meeting with a MSE faculty/staff member. Thank you for your efforts in keeping the department secure. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Nanocluster Evolution under Irradiation in Precipitation Strengthened Alloys" By Priyam V. Patki Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisors: Professor Janelle P. Wharry and Professor Maria A. Okuniewski ABSTRACT Precipitation Strengthened Materials like Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) Steel alloys and Ni super alloys have become attractive materials for use as structural materials in Advanced Nuclear Reactors exposed to higher operating temperatures and higher irradiation damage doses. This study reviews and summarizes the various irradiation experiments carried out on ODS alloys and Ni alloys. Commonly observed changes in nanocluster evolution are in its size, number density, chemistry and crystal structure. It is observed that nanocluster evolution is more probable to take place under ion irradiation than it is under neutron irradiation. Trends based on temperature have been observed to affect the chemistry and crystal structure of nanoclusters. This review also studies the various mechanisms such as ballistic dissolution, Ostwald ripening, irradiation enhanced diffusion and homogeneous nucleation which can be used to explain nanocluster evolution in materials. As one mechanism cannot suffice to explain nanocluster evolution, efforts using multiple mechanisms have been made to predict nanocluster evolution but there is still a need for a more holistic approach.
