In addition, Sam will support and instruct in the use of laboratory tools used in research by graduate students, undergraduates, and faculty and provide instructional and operational support services for course delivery, assisting students with projects as appropriate. Sam comes to us with degrees from two of our peer Big 10 Materials Engineering programs, earning his Masters in MSE at Michigan State University, and his MSE Bachelor’s with a Chemistry Minor from the University of Illinois. Sam’s office is ARMS 2207 – drop by and say Hello! (schmidsd(a)purdue.edu<mailto:schmidsd@purdue.edu>; 765-49-49718) **** Results from the OSHA Building Inspection **** In October, Purdue Environmental Health and Safety (EHS; formerly known as REM) administered the annual OSHA Building Inspection of ARMS. Action Items were emailed to ARMS Lab Supervisors by Casey in November and were all resolved by December 7th. The top 3 violations were: 1. Unlabeled Containers: All containers need appropriate labels that indicate their contents, even “water”. In particular, waste containers should be labeled using the orange Hazardous Waste Disposal Tags and include the following information: PI name, chemical names (written out; no acronyms or chemical formulas), volume percents, and an indication of hazards at bottom of label. 2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): It is important that all PPE be kept clean and properly maintained. If lab coats are intended to be reused, do not store them atop one another, on seats/chairs, or in any other manner where cross contamination may occur. 3. Power Strips and Extension cords: Extension cords should not be used as permanent wiring. Muli-outlet “power strips” also need to have 15-amp over-current protection (typically, these are the power strips with an “on/off” button). Household-use extension cords are not permitted due to the potential for overload. **** Preparing for the Spring ISP Inspection **** As part of our Integrated Safety Plan<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/isp/index.html> (ISP) lab certification with Purdue EHS, each year we conduct a guided “self-audit” of the safety training procedures, hazards, and hygiene of all lab spaces that MSE personnel utilize at Purdue using this Self-Audit Checklist<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/forms/ispcheck.pdf>. After our self-audit checklists are submitted, EHS staff will inspect select lab spaces in each building. To prepare for these self-audits and inspections, please be proactive in identifying and abating (fixing) any lingering lab safety and hygiene issues in the lab space where you most frequently work. And, if you are so inclined, you/your lab can complete & submit the Self-Audit Checklist anytime between now and January 31. This could be a fun Finals Week group activity?! The indemnification timeline is as follows: * January 31: Self-Audit Checklists must be submitted to the MSE Safety Committee for review and corrections, if needed. * March 1: Self-Audit Checklists are submitted to Purdue EHS and select labs are inspected. A list of Items of Concern is created for each lab space and sent to the MSE lab supervisors for correction (abatement). * April 15: Abatement reports are submitted to Purdue EHS for final review and certification. Hard copies of the Self-Audit Checklist, associated instructions, and the lab master list are available outside of Prof. Erk’s office (ARMS 2315). Please watch for future announcements from Casey about this important process. **** Safety Best-Practice: Secondary Containment for Chemicals & Waste **** Secondary containment is a control measure, placed or built around an accumulation container or tank, to prevent its contents from leaving the area in the event of a spill or leak. These are typically shallow plastic trays or bins. Secondary containers are also a great way to separate and organize your stored chemicals in a clear way. See example below of secondary containers used for chemical storage in ARMS. These clean-up sessions are in response to lab user feedback from our recent safety survey (“the labs are dirty and disorganized”) as well as to the growing number of safety infractions and near-misses that have occurred over the past year in these spaces. As you all know first-hand, it is so much easier, safer, and more fun to complete your research activities in a clean, well-organized lab space. *** All active lab users of these spaces are required to help with 2 clean-up sessions per year, which take place on the first Friday of every month from 3-4 pm. Each session will involve 5-7 lab users as well as Casey Peters. Checklists are utilized for each lab space to streamline the workflow. The next cleaning session will be Friday, February 2nd. 2130 Key Fee Lab Coat Rules! Read the entire email, don't jeopardize the pilot program.

Materials Engineering "2130 Key Fee Lab Coats" This is a pilot program and a trial for the MSE Key Fee Labs, if we have a successful year, this could move to other labs. If lab coats are "Lost or Stolen" this could jeopardize the pilot program for other parts of the MSE Department. Where are the lab coats to be stored: ONLY IN 2130! ! What do you do if you get stuff on the sleeves or the body of the coat: Put the coat in the "white hamper" beside the lab coat rack. Lab coats will be picked up on Wednesday for laundering and should be returned next week (Wednesday). If chemicals are spilled on the lab coat please contact the Safety Officer, Casey Peters at Peter878(a)Purdue.edu<mailto:Peter878@Purdue.edu> to ensure proper handling for laundering, blue hamper for lab coats that have been exposed or have chemicals spilled on them. What do you do if the coat isn't dirty: Hang it back up and put it back in the Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large section for the next student to easily find their size. What do I do if I find a "Materials Eng Lab 2130" labeled lab coat in another (Non-Key Fee) Lab: Please return it to the 2130 Lab coat rack or laundering hamper. What do I do if I find a damaged coat (torn pocket, fraying material, missing buttons): Put it aside and notify the Safety Officer, Casey Peters at Peter878(a)Purdue.edu<mailto:Peter878@Purdue.edu> so it can be marked for repair or replacement. Who can use the Materials Engineering Key Fee Lab Coats in the 2130 Lab: Any Student/Staff/Faulty member that has a Lab Class/Senior Design/Grad Research in the 2130, 2132, 2136, 2138, 2160, 2170, 2172, 2191. There will be exceptions for Senior Design in other labs, BUT the lab coats MUST be returned to 2130. What do I do if I can't find my size lab coat: Please contact the Safety Officer, Casey Peters at Peter878(a)Purdue.edu<mailto:Peter878@Purdue.edu> so we can adjust sizes as needed. What NOT to do: Drag the lab coat sleeves in the red oil (Diamond Lapping Oil)*, polishing compound*, sanding/polishing wheels damaging/soiling the sleeves*. The 2130 Key Fee lab coats are not to be removed from the ARMS Building! *Please use the longer cuffed gloves for polishing, tuck the lab coat into the glove to prevent lab coat damage and chemical transfer. New 2326 Projector

Hello MSE Department, The new projector is finally up where it belongs and is working! There is currently an HDMI cord hanging down from it for the meantime. I am working on getting a cord to pop up under the table to make connecting easier. There is a remote on the table for you to turn the projector on and off. As a general reminder, please treat ALL of the MSE technical equipment (printers, projectors, projector screens, TVs, etc.) carefully. They are shared by the entire department and need to be treated with a bit of patience. Of course, if you are having problems with them, please feel free to stop by and let me know or send me an email. Thank you for your patience! Backup 2326 Camera Available

Hello MSE department, If you have been in ARMS 2326 lately you might have seen a new camera sitting on the table. This is our new backup camera for when the OWL is in use. You will have to select it as the default camera when you start up meetings. It plugs in via a USB drive and should work immediately. Unfortunately, it is not as high-tech as the OWL. To get it to track who is speaking, you will have to download the software for it. Otherwise, it will just point in one direction and pick up whoever is talking once you plug it in. There is a microphone on the base of it. This was ECN's recommendation. Please read the details below and adjust your course plans if needed accordingly. * The building will open safely on 1/17 (Wed) with restrictions * Coordination will be between PUFD, O&M, EHS, and others * Building will open at 7am. Building will be closed at 11pm.
