Hello, As a couple of you have already noticed, the B200 and B214 locks have been changed out recently. As of late yesterday, they are online but have no user list. Grant Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Mukerrem Cakmak ABSTRACT Piezoelectric materials enjoy a broad set of applications as transducers by converting mechanical energy to electrical energy. While piezoceramics are inherently brittle and opaque, thermosetting polymers can be mechanically tough, flexible, and transparent. Properties of both can be preserved in an anisotropic composite, where piezoelectric particles are aligned into chain-like structures running through the thickness of the material, termed a quasi-1-3 composite. This is achieved through electric-field structuring, a facile process that decreases the amount of filler material required via anisotropy, is scalable, and is compatible with continuous production. Improving the performance of composite material relies on tuning processing conditions due to the structure-property relationship and material properties of the constituents. In taking a wholistic approach to fabricating ultrasonic transducers in a roll-to-roll manner, benefits are promised for applications such as medical imaging, structural health monitoring, and hydrophones. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Effects of Processing on the Morphology and Structure of Thermoplastic Polymer and Composite Systems" By Jessica Lavorata Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Jan Anders Mansson ABSTRACT Polymer systems that withstand high-rate solidification experience dimensional instabilities that cause residual stresses, defects, and premature failure. The purpose of this paper is to present the major processing parameters that affect solidification and how these parameters control the material's morphology in both pure polymer and polymer-composite systems. During injection molding and extrusion, processing parameters such as cooling rate, pressure, thermo-mechanical, and thermo-rheological histories are presented and related to material properties such as crystallinity, modulus, and strength. The morphology and structure of polymers is also examined and correlated to processing conditions. The discussion continues by exploring how an understanding on polymer solidification can extend to the solidification behavior of fiber-reinforced composites. In these composites, defects such as voids, cracks, fiber buckling, and complete part distortion which compromises the overall integrity of the final part are reviewed and related back to the initial processing conditions. New Door Locks

Hello MSE Researchers, I have received several emails about access issues and the new door locks. I am sending out this email as an update. The auto-unlocks for undergraduate lab classes are set up and functioning. The user list is not. I received an email earlier today giving us the all clear to start updating user access to all labs except B200, B214, MSEE spaces, and ARMS 2114. Until the user list is updated, the lab spaces are still business hours only (8-5 M-F). There are no "favorites" for who be put in first. Please do not send me emails requesting this. I would appreciate your patience with this process.
