LORRE B-38 Cleanup Remember that we will be doing the cleanup of B-38 on Saturday October 25th, starting at 9am. We need everyone's help! Please keep this day open and plan to be there to help. With everyone's efforts, the job should go fairly quickly. Over the next week, Drs. Ladisch, Engelberth, Ximenes, and Mosier will make a list of the big items to be moved first. After the big items, there are many smaller items and re-organizing that will be needed. If you have a preference (helping to move bigger items or re-organizing smaller items), please let us know. We will be developing a work list of items with approximate start times for that day to keep the number of people in B-38 to a reasonable number. There are also a few items that will need finishing on the second floor as well. LORRE Seminars Our weekly seminars will be held on Mondays 4-5pm! All LORRE graduate students are expected to attend. Lab Clean Up - Saturday October 25th

LORRE Lab Clean Up (Basement of Potter) Thank you all for your efforts over the summer to re-organize the LORRE labs on the second and third floors of Potter. There is still some work to do in those labs, but there is still one more big job to do in the basement (B38). Saturday October 25th, starting at 9am, we will make a big effort to clean out and re-organize B38 (the pilot plant). We need everyone's help! Please keep this day open and plan to be there to help. With everyone's efforts, the job should go fairly quickly. Look for more information as the day gets closer.

LORRE Seminars Our weekly seminars will be held on Mondays 4-5pm! All LORRE graduate students are expected to attend. Seminar on Monday October 6th will be by Daehwan Kim in the Fu Room (POTR 234). Adaptation of Yeast to Inhibitors and Ethanol Fermentation of Biobated Lignocellulosic Substrates Abstract: Phenols produced by high plants for defense mechanism are believed to play key role in inhibition of enzyme hydrolysis (Ximenes 2010, 2011; Kim et al. 2013, 2014; Cao et al. 2013; Ko et al. 2014). Several products released during pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials such as phenols including lignin degradation products, tannins and gallic acid are also major inhibitors that can reduce enzyme activity (Ximenes 2010, 2011). Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the most useful yeast for fermentation of foods and ethanol. If S. cerevisiae has a tolerance of phenol compounds or can use these compounds as source of carbon and energy, we can expect that it could contribute to economically feasible biofuel production. From this study, we are attempted to adapt the Y-1546 yeast on several pretreated liquid which have high phenols for survival, and have tested if adapted Y-1546 yeast is improved to use the glucose and produce the ethanol than original yeast and/or other yeast. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Ruben Carbonell Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor North Carolina State University "Challenges and Recent Advances in the Purification of Biotherapeutics" September 23, 2014 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15-10:45 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: An exciting and fast growing area in medicine involves the use of proteins such as antibodies derived from genetically modified organisms to treat serious chronic diseases. Unfortunately, the high cost of development and production of these biological drugs makes them inaccessible to many individuals, especially in developing countries. There is a growing demand for faster, more efficient and safe approaches for the production of complex biotherapeutics. This seminar will describe some novel purification approaches for biologics that utilize selective small peptide ligands that recognize and bind to protein products and high throughput, high capacity membranes for product capture and purification. Bio: Ruben G. Carbonell is the Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State University, which he joined in 1984 after 10 years in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of California, Davis. He is the Director of both the Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) and the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science at NC State. Prof. Carbonell has authored over 230 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and he has trained 77 MS and PhD students and 36 postdoctoral students during his academic career. Dr. Carbonell is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. He completed his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1969 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University in 1973.
