There are places for students (grad and undergrad) to get involved or to involve students in your courses if you are faculty. https://purdue.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_egpgKqyYUFQrFWJ Earth Day Service-Learning Event Purdue University / NICHES Land Trust Tuesday, April 22, 2014 8:00am - 12:00pm in Pfendler Hall Dean's Auditorium, Room 241 12:00 - 4:30pm Bus travel to site location and back Background: The holiday that we now celebrate known as Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970. In the 1960s events like the fire on Cleveland's Cuyahoga River and the publishing of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" began creating an environmental fervor. Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson was inspired by these events to create a holiday that would focus on mobilizing the public. More than 40 years later we are still celebrating this holiday in a time when 'sustainability' is more important than ever. Here at Purdue we have many events tied to community engagement and education on Earth Day. Purdue staff, faculty, and students are all encouraged to participate. Overview: This year the events are focused on invasive plant species and deer management. The service-learning aspect of the day will be pulling the garlic mustard plant at a NICHES site in order to restore the area back to a more original and healthy state. Our plan is to do this pull several years in a row, so students and staff that participate each year, will be able to see an improvement in the health of the area. More details are listed below. Schedule: 8:00 - 8:45 am (Pfendler Hall, Room 241) Bob Easter, stewardship manager for NICHES, (Northern Indiana Citizens Helping Ecosystems Survive) will be speaking about what NICHES is, how it was formed, and what its goals are. 8:45 - 9:30 am (Pfendler Hall, Room 241) Mike Mycroft is the Resource Management Coordinator for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. His topic of discussion will be deer management. In 2013 Indiana actually held deer reduction hunting because of the necessity of controlling the deer population to maintain the environment. Mycroft was involved in this event and will be speaking about the damage that can occur because of deer and what efforts can be taken to prevent this. 9:30 - 10:15 am (Pfendler Hall, Room 241) NICHES' executive director, Gus Nyberg, will be speaking about the use of controlled burns/fires. These are commonly used as a natural means to maintain the landscape. You will learn about how this is done and how grassland areas benefit from this practice. 10:15 - 11:00 am (Pfendler Hall, Room 241) A Purdue alum, Tom Swinford, will be speaking about relationships between governmental/non-governmental land management organizations and private land owners. His talk will be about how these groups can work together with the common goal of focusing on funding necessary programs. Tom works for the IDNR and is on the advisory board for NICHES. 11:00 - 11:45 am Lunch will be provided. 12:00 - 5:00 pm (Bus Trip to Niches Land Trust Location) The afternoon events will begin by having volunteers load the buses at the Pfendler dock. Volunteers will be taken to a NICHES location where a site leader will discuss the history of the natural area. This will transition to a discussion of the environmental challenges created by invasive plant species and white tailed deer. Volunteers will be shown an area that is functioning properly and has the desired levels of biodiversity, then they will be taken to an area facing invasive species. Here the volunteers will spend time pulling the invasive garlic mustard plant to help improve the area. At 5:00 pm buses will have volunteers dropped back off at Pfendler Hall. Linda S. Please see Dr. Jakubowski's Bio below. Marcin Jakubowski is a Polish-American who came to the U.S. from Poland as a child. He graduated with honors from Princeton and earned his Ph.D. in fusion physics from the University of Wisconsin. Frustrated with the lack of relevance to pressing world issues in his education, he founded Open Source Ecology in 2003 in order to make closed-loop manufacturing a reality. He began development of the Global Village Construction Set (GVCS)—an open source tool set of 50 industrial machines necessary to create a small civilization with modern comforts. His work has recently been recognized as a 2012 TED Senior Fellow, in Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2012, as a 2013 Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow, and a White House Champion of Change in 2013. MS Thesis Defense - Patrick Austin Freeland Friday, February 28th 3:00 PM PFEN 120 Abstract Climate Change Risk, Impact, & Vulnerability in Indian Country Very little literature exists which details how climate change impacts Indian Country. This study investigates how US newspaper stories published from 1991 to 2011 present American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) perceptions, and observations, of environmental changes resulting from climate change. Several specific risks, impacts, and vulnerabilities were documented, and observations of climate change from AI/AN perceptions were analyzed for content to identify three frames of perspective: pan-Indian, tribally-specific, and individual perceptions. Gaining Consent: Navigating the Tribal IRB Process By law, ethical considerations are paramount when dealing with research in AI/AN tribes and communities. While each nation is supposed to review research to assess the risk and beneficence of research, in practice several tribes have neither a standing research ethics committee nor institutional review board (IRB). This research details the methodology of contact, communication, and consideration when working with tribal nations in the US. Dear Faculty Colleagues, The Sigma Xi Poster competition will be held on : Wednesday, February 12, 2014 Stewart Center 302 - 306 6:00 - 9:00 PM I AM IN NEED OF FACULTY TO SERVE AS POSTER JUDGES. IF ENOUGH FACULTY VOLUNTEER we will have a great turnout, as well as an easier time judging. If all goes well, you will judge 6-9 posters. Students or Post docs will give a three minute presentation. You will ask questions, and then score the posters and the presentation. I have attached the entire document that outlines the entire submission process, but below is the specific judging criteria. Judging will take about 75-90 minutes. There will be drinks and snacks to tide you over. I might even bake. Posters should be 56" wide by 36" high. Posters will be judged on the following criteria: Completeness: All relevant information is contained in the poster (Background, purpose, methods, results, interpretations, and conclusions. No misspellings or grammatical errors. Clarity: Poster is accessible to a person not expert on its content. There should be a minimum of jargon. Design: Color and layout attract attention and guide the reader. Poster is legible (axes are readable) from at least 3 ft. Presentation: Presenter(s) professional (both in speech and appearance) and demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter and can clearly and concisely answer all questions. Promise: The poster clearly explains the need for the research and makes apparent what the results of this research will contribute to the academic field. Last year was the first year I was responsible for the entire competition. People who judged were very happy with the experience and marveled at the quality of our students and post - docs. This is a great opportunity to see the breadth and quality of the research enterprise. Please send me an email to commit to volunteer. The students and post-docs want a big crowd. ESE, Purdue University; Current NSF Fellow Co-Founder and CEO of World Help Solutions Director of Creativity and Innovation of William Jewell College [Inline image 1]At World Help Solutions, we believe that solutions must be local to be sustained long-term. World Help Solutions provides interactive mobile platforms that connect educational information (ex. clean water) remotely to impoverished communities, empowering locals, including women and youth, to solve clean water and agriculture problems. The app uses customizable decision-making software to give indigenous people the power to improve their own environment, such as improving clean water choices, medical treatments, or agricultural productivity. Landon Young is a recent MS graduate from ESE, a 2013 Kaufman Fellow, and is currently pursuing his PhD in ESE as an NSF Fellow while also serving as Director of Creativity and Innovation at William Jewell College. While at Purdue, Landon launched World Help Solutions, which he is now serving as CEO and using it as one tool in conducting his PhD research. Linda S. Two things with regards to ESE applicants RE: Now Accepting Fellowship Nominations to Recruit Current ESE Applicants

A couple things – (1) the Snapshot summary that is posted a month old except for a few updated comments on those that were listed back in mid-December. We currently have 27 completed applications in the faculty review folder, 16 near completed and listed in preview, and several more apps in processing. The freeze impacted the GRE testing and scores so we may start posting some of the apps without them. We will get an updated Snapshot up in the next day or two. (2) In order to successfully recruit the best students that fit our faculty and ESE, we need to focus our immediate efforts. So PLEASE let me know of your level of interest for new students this year, i.e., you have room in your research group and/or you anticipate having funds for additional students. This will help since even if a student is great, if there is no appropriate research group with room, we don’t want to bring them here. Each fellowship award consists of the minimum stipend of $16,386 for one year, the associated graduate medical insurance supplement (~$1,568), and the fringe benefits (0.0041x stipend) associated with the minimum stipend. It is expected that 3 additional years at whatever stipend is set by the nominator will be facilitated by the faculty member. ESE applicants are being reviewed now by the new ESE Admission Committee as they become complete and uploaded. All ESE faculty have access to review applicants at the SharePoint website. Note completed applications are in the ready to review folder while nearly completed applications may be viewed in the preview folder. In addition there will be a snapshot folder for a quick summary of current applicants. Go to http://www.gradschool.purdue.edu/ese/ then click on faculty tab and click ESE Faculty login in the drop menu. When logging in, don’t forget to put onepurdue\ before your user name. An official nomination should include a letter of nomination from the potential advisor (~1 page) and a brief description/statement indicating how you plan to support the student for three additional years, which can include other fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, or a combination thereof. Dr. Bowling and her associated academic unit (AGRY) are committed to working with you to facilitate continued funding assuming satisfactory progress is made toward the degree, which includes consistently good academic standing in both your courses and research efforts and being timely in your committee meetings and filing of your POS (refer to ESE handbook). These additional years of support may be provided through teaching assistantships, research assistantships, training grants, other non-recruiting fellowship support, or a combination thereof through your major advisor and associated academic department. If a Fellow changes advisors during their year on the Lynn Fellowship, the Fellowship would move with the student to the new advisor’s research program. The new advisor would need to assume responsibility for facilitating funding of the additional three years as indicated above. If the new advisor is not within the same department, then the academic home of the new advisor would assume responsibility to continue any financial support to the Fellow.
