Call for faculty who are interested in participating as a co-advisor or committee member for students selected to be in the first cohort and subsequent cohorts. See below and attached. : TRACER (TRajeCtories towards watER security) Purdue Partnership with Helmholtz-UFZ Center for Environmental Research (Leipzig, Germany) and University of Florida Purdue University has an active, institutional level Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Helmholtz-UFZ Center for Environmental Research (Leipzig, Germany), which includes University of Florida as the second US partner, and Technical University of Dresden, Germany. The catalyst for this MOU was extended discussions during my sabbatical leave at UFZ. To date, several PhD students from Purdue and faculty members have attended Summer Field School (in Magdeburg, Germany), Summer Synthesis Workshops (one at Purdue; two in Dresden), and have been part of personnel exchanges. Last year, a six-year collaborative project was funded by Helmholtz Association to establish a new International Research Schools, which are focused on a scientific topic, creates possibilities to use synergies between the German and international partners to increase research performance while at the same time offering a structured program of doctoral education. This project, TRACER (TRajeCtories towards watER security) is a Helmholtz International Research School, a part of the Initiative and Networking Fund of the President of the Helmholtz Association<https://www.helmholtz.de/en/about_us/the_association/initiating_and_network…>. The TRACER project focuses on five topics reacted to water security, both quantity and quality, in diverse global basins, as impacted by anthropogenic pressures moderated by natural processes: * [Graphical illustration of the PLAN-B framework of TRACER | (c) TRACER Team] Basin-scale Water Quality Dynamics * Metabolism of Aquatic Ecosystems * Urban Water Management * Basin-wide Land Use Changes * Policy/Management for Water Security TRACER project aims to develop a new comprehensive understanding of temporal trajectories of human impacts on natural water systems and reciprocal effects on societies. This understanding will be globally transferable across wide ranges of economic and societal settings. The project will fund (3 years each) several PhD students over the project duration, and the cohorts will also include PhD students funded by partner institutions. Faculty members at all partner institutions can serve either as co-advisors or committee members. TRACER PhD students can participate in a variety of research and academic activities, including extended visits at partner institutions, and attending summer schools and synthesis workshops. Moderator: Lynne Dahmen Panelists Dan Kelly, Department of Philosophy Dan Kelly's research interests lie at the intersection of the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, moral theory, and evolution. He is the author of Yuck! The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust, and has published papers on moral judgment, social norms, responsibility, racial cognition, cross-cultural diversity, and David Foster Wallace. Zhao Ma, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources Zhao Ma is an Associate Professor of Natural Resource Social Science from the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University. Her research program broadly addresses the question of how individuals and organizations make natural resource decisions in the context of social-ecological change. Leigh Raymond, Department of Political Science Leigh Raymond is Professor of Political Science at Purdue University. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from U.C. Berkeley, and a B.A. in Philosophy from Yale University. His research focuses on the politics of environmental policy design, adoption, and implementation, especially policies using market incentives such as carbon pricing. Satish V. Ukkusuri, Lyles School of Civil Engineering Dr. Satish V. Ukkusuri is a Professor in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University since July 2014 where he teaches courses in transportation systems and freight and logistics planning. Previously, he was an Associate Professor at Purdue University from 2009-2014 and on the faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from August 2005 - August 2009. Dr. Ukkusuri is a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure group at Purdue. Dear all, We are excited to invite you to a C4E and ESE co-sponsored seminar by Dr. Nigel Asquith from Watershared in Bolivia. See flyer attached. Dr. Asquith is our partner for a NSF-funded, large-scale randomized control trial (RCT) on payments for ecosystem services (PES) in Bolivia, and he has been working on PES and PES-like programs for over 15 years around the world, particularly in Latin America. We are honored that he is coming to visit us at Purdue and would love to have you join us for his seminar on Monday, October 28, 3:30-4:30 pm (followed by refreshment) at WALC . Please let us know if you would like an individual meeting (20-30 minutes) with Dr. Asquith as well. He is available to meet 10-11:30 am on Monday (Oct. 28) as well.
