Everyone, Next week we are refinishing the hallways around the cleanroom. All days but Friday there is work going on from 5:30AM to 9:00AM. J-Bay - Closed on Wednesday Dec. 16th until 9:00AM. On Monday and Tuesday you will only be able to access to the J-Bay using the east hallway. Bio-CR - Closed Thursday Dec 17th until 9:00AM. NOTICE - Cleanroom and Labs are Open for Research

All BNC Users - The preventive maintenance closure of the Birck Nanotechnology Facility has been completed successfully. The cleanroom and laboratories are now open for research. Some equipment is still down for maintenance, or is in the process of being started back up. Please check iLabs for individual equipment status. East Wing General Lab Ambient Temperature and Humidity Control

Dear East Lab Wing User, This morning there it was discovered there could be a motor or belt failure causing a serious vibration at the air handling unit that is transferring to the concrete floor causing vibration issue down into the lab areas. We need to shutdown this air handling unit that controls ambient temperature and humidity for all the following labs and galleys. 1031 2031 1039 2037 1043 2043 1045 2066 1066 2069 1069 2077 1077 2081 1081 2087 1083 2087A 1089 2087B We are not sure how long the down time will be until we complete the investigation of the unit and review parts needed. For safety reason we plan to maintain normal BIO and chemical exhaust levels. When you enter these lab spaces you may experience higher static pressure levels effecting how easy the lab doors will open. We plan to shut down the unit at 10AM. Dear East Lab Wing User, Physical Facilities has complete the investigation on the air handling unit and unfortunately we have bad news to report. There was serious damage to the main fan wheel bearing and fan shaft (attached photo). Adding to the issue Monday is a holiday for most companies will be closed and shipping carriers will not be delivering to Purdue campus leading to more delays with getting repair parts needed for the fan. We could be looking at the middle to late next week before we have that unit operational. We are currently investigating different options to speed up the repairs when possible. Being this interruption turned into a long term outage, attention to labs with high heat loads (e.g. lab 1039, lab 1043, and lab 1031) where research owners and users will need to manually monitor temperatures inside their labs and take appropriate action to protect research equipment from overheating. Additionally there will be no humidity control and we will be at the mercy of the outside ambient conditions and to expect higher humidity levels in ALL labs in the east lab wing. Physical Facilities department knows this is a critical issue for research at the center and this is a high priority for them. I will kept you posted on the progress of the repairs when new information becomes available. Upcoming PM on Argon & Oxygen Tanks

Dear Birck Research Community, Our Staff is working to maintain a safe environment while meeting all of our user's needs in the Birck Nanotechnology Center and we wanted to make you aware of an upcoming preventive maintenance activity on two of our process gas tanks. Our Praxair Argon and Oxygen microbulk systems are in need of this preventive maintenance service and the work will be performed by Praxair. It is expected to only take a few hours to complete and we will have external cylinders on-line to provide continuous pressure and flow of Ultra High Purity (UHP) Argon and Oxygen while the work is being done. Planned Work The Praxair service engineer will be replacing the pressure relief safety valve which prevents the gas vessel from exceeding the permissible vessel pressure. During this work he will also add a valve that will allow future work to occur without disrupting our gas supply, or the need to connect external supply cylinders. The back-up UHP gas cylinders will be put on-line by Cryogenic Systems personnel prior to the Praxair work so the Birck facility will have continuous service. However, we ask that no work be performed that will use higher than normal amounts of Argon or Oxygen while this PM work is performed. Date of Work This work is planned for either Thursday, 8/13/20, or Friday, 8/14/20, depending on when the microbulk tanks can be filled. The work will occur between 8:00am and 5:00pm, and once the schedule is finalized we will notify the user community again. Thanks for your support for this important maintenance item. Birck Staff

Everyone, Tomorrow Wednesday the 12th, we will be scrubbing and waxing the east entrance of the cleanroom and in front of the men's restroom. Both areas will be closed from 5AM to 11AM. Thursday the 13th, the west entrance to the cleanroom will be closed from 5AM to 11AM. Thank you for your understanding. Updates on Birck Access & Equipment Training

Dear Birck Research Community, As we continue to ramp up our research activities in both the labs and cleanroom we wanted to describe access and training requirements to our user community. Access As everyone knows we are now in the mode of being open under pandemic protocols. All of our labs are green and under the required protocols of lab-specific individual Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). For anyone to gain access to any lab requires them to have a meeting with the POC (Point of Contact) of that lab to review the specific lab SOP. Once the SOP is reviewed, and the user signs a document stating they will comply with the requirements of the SOP then the POC will arrange with Mary Jo for card-swipe access to be provided to the building and to that lab. Of course this presumes the user was already approved to work in Birck prior to the pandemic closures. If a person is new to Birck, they must first take BNC 111 (orientation and safety training) prior to having the SOP review meeting for a lab. Also, if new users want to work in the cleanroom they must also take BNC 200 (Process Review) and BNC 206 (Cleanroom Gowning Training). The cleanroom SOP must then be reviewed with me, and the signature page provided to me, before cleanroom access can be given. Training We want to make sure everyone is aware that equipment training is now available, but also under COVID restrictions. To receive any equipment-specific training which typically requires less than 6' distancing due to the interactive nature of training, the trainer and trainee must follow this protocol: 1. Only 1-on-1 training is being conducted at this time. We can't have more than one person being trained due to the increased risk of exposure with multiple trainees. 2. This applies to all equipment training..... not just cleanroom process equipment, but also Electron Microscopy, Optics, Surface Analysis, Lab equipment, etc. 3. Enhanced PPE must be worn. In the cleanroom this is an additional face shield on the trainer and trainee (trainee at the discretion of the trainer). In labs this enhanced PPE includes face shield, lab coat, gloves and face mask. 4. iLabs is being used to request training for the individual tools. As before the pandemic, we're using iLabs training requests to manage training. Trainees are being taken on a first-come first-serve basis.
