The issue that caused the evacuation has been resolved and the cleanroom is now open for full operation. The laboratories were declared open for full operation when the building all-clear was announced. The entire facility is now in normal operation. A software problem in the Axic system caused the chamber to vent a very small quantity of silane gas to the exhaust system. While the silane was fully contained in the exhaust, we evacuated the building as a safety precaution. Everything is now back to normal, and we will work with the equipment supplier to resolve the software situation. John John R. All BNC Users - The preventive maintenance shutdown of the Birck Nanotechnology Facility has been completed successfully due to the efforts the BNC Engineering Staff and Physical Facilities trades. The cleanroom and laboratories are now open for operation. Some equipment is still shut down for maintenance, or is in the process of being started back up. Please check Coral for individual equipment status. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this set of important preventive-maintenance procedures. BNC Management

Electrical Shutdowns week of 7 Oct 2013

From: Weaver, John R Sent: Friday, October 04, 2013 9:31 AM To: BNC Staff Subject: Electrical Shutdowns week of 7 Oct 2013 During the semiannual PM shutdown there will be several electrical shutdowns to make tie-ins for the laboratory expansion projects. Please be aware of these shutdowns and arrange your schedule accordingly. The most significant shutdown will take place Tuesday, 8 Oct 2013, from 7:30 am - 8:30 am. During this shutdown, power will be off to most of the offices on the west side of the building - including lighting. Please power down computers and other critical office equipment prior to the shutdown. Additionally, other important building functions may be affected: * ITAP computer closets - it is possible that the entire building will lose the computer network during that time * West door to the building - the door will lock down * Card Reader system - this shutdown may affect the card reader system, and therefore access to the laboratories * Elevators - the elevators will be locked down on the first floor * Fire panels - we may hear the trouble alarm in the atrium * Convenience outlets in the west galleys * Atrium lighting - some or all of the lights in the atrium may be affected Please note that we are depending on the building drawings and panel schedule for this information. While we believe these to be correct, there is always the possibility that the contractor who built the building made a mistake on a panel schedule and an unforeseen area may lose power. Monday, 7 October 2013 (afternoon) and Wednesday, 9 October 2013 (morning) some of the power for emergency lighting will be shut down for 1-hour periods. This will not have a significant effect, but you may see lights shutting off during those times. Please note that the normal PM communicated previously will be going on during these shutdowns.
