NOTICE - BNC Research Equipment Power Outage on Wednesday May 4, 2020 from 10AM to 2PM

Birck Nanotechnology Center Research Equipment Power Outage for ALL GENERAL LABORATORY, SUB FAB, and CLEANROOM Wednesday May 6, 2020 from 10AM to 2PM Dear BNC User, This is advance notice about major electrical power outage involving all research equipment in the center on Wednesday May 6 from 10AM to 2 PM. Physical Facilities High Voltage Department have firmed up plans necessary to gain access and have parts needed to fix the switchboard #1 that supplies power to all research equipment in the center. This involves all research equipment in ALL GENERAL LABORATORY, SUB FAB, AND CLEANROOM. All research equipment connected to our building wide Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) or generator power will NOT lose power during this time. This work will be completed during our normal spring building preventative maintenance closure that is scheduled from Monday May 4 through Friday May 8, 2020. More details on the preventative maintenance closure will be communicated as we get closer to May 4, 2020. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. If the outside weather is below normal conditions the cleanroom relative humidity levels can drop to 10% to 15% (normal humidity level is 45%), which will substantially increase electrostatic discharge when handling electronics devices in the cleanroom. At this time we will cancel the controlled shutdown of the cleanroom and general labs air handling and chemical exhaust systems. All fume hoods, toxic gases, and chemical processes will remain operational. As part of the steam contingency plan the atrium and office areas will remain off until the steam pressure is back to normal. Once the steam pressure is back to normal it will take 12 hours for the cleanroom clean steam generators to heat up and stabilize. So cleanroom humidity will not be in control until mid-morning tomorrow. I will send another update when steam pressure is back to normal. Dear BNC User - Update - There has been no change with the steam pressure at this time. Due to issues outside of our control at 4:30PM we will start to do a controlled shutdown of the cleanroom and general lab handling system and ALL chemical exhaust. This means that all fume hoods, toxic gases, and chemical process will need to be contained and shutdown! If the steam pressure starts to return prior to 4:30PM then we will send a update to cancel the controlled shutdown. Campus Steam Outage

Dear BNC Users - We have lost campus wide steam pressure at few minutes ago wade power plant steam boilers shut down. Several building alarms came in that we are responding to. Our high pressure steam normally operates at 125 psi and is currently at 13psi. We have lost humidity control for cleanroom and general lab spaces. We are close to losing HVAC controls for the general labs. We have implemented steam contingency plans and shut all atrium and office HVAC systems plus all general lab and cleanroom humidity control. The humidity in the general labs and cleanroom are very low at 20% (normal is 45%). Wade is in the process of bring up their boilers. Re-use bouffant caps and shoe covers for at least week when entering the cleanroom

All, We have been notified by our supplier that until further notice they will not supply shoe covers or bouffant caps. This is in part do to the corona virus by production of these goods and increased need in the medical field. We are looking into possible alternatives but until thing change please follow the above request. Stephen Birck Safety Officer
